How do I descale my Philips HD5400 coffee maker?

Mix equal parts of water and white vinegar, fill the water tank, run a brew cycle without coffee. Repeat with fresh water twice. Descaling monthly prevents mineral buildup.

Why is my coffee maker not brewing?

Possible causes: no power, water tank empty, or the anti-drip valve is stuck. Check that the carafe is correctly placed and the machine is plugged in.

How do I clean the permanent filter?

Rinse the permanent filter under running water after each use. For deeper cleaning, soak in warm soapy water and scrub gently with a soft brush.

Can I use paper filters?

Yes, you can use cone-shaped paper filters size 4. Insert them into the filter basket before adding coffee grounds. Ensure the filter is properly seated.

What is the capacity of the water tank?

The water tank holds up to 1.2 liters (12 cups). Do not overfill beyond the MAX mark.

How do I set the auto shut-off timer?

This model has a preset auto shut-off after 1 hour of inactivity. It cannot be adjusted. The warm plate stays on for 30 minutes then turns off.

Why is my coffee weak?

Weak coffee may result from insufficient coffee grounds or too coarse a grind. Use 1 tablespoon of ground coffee per cup and adjust to taste.

How often should I replace the water filter?

This model does not have a built-in water filter. Use filtered or bottled water to reduce scale buildup and improve taste.

The carafe is cracked. Where can I buy a replacement?

You can purchase the original Philips carafe (part number 996510054873) from authorized dealers or online marketplaces like Amazon.

Is it safe to leave the coffee maker on overnight?

No. Always unplug the coffee maker after use. The auto shut-off will turn it off after 1 hour, but do not leave unattended for extended periods.

• Before connecting the appliance, please check if the voltage indicated on the appliance corresponds with the mains voltage in your home.
• Do not place the appliance on a hot surface.
• Remove the mains plug from the wall socket:
• if problems occur during making coffee;
• before cleaning the appliance.
• Do not allow the mains cord to come into contact with hot surfaces.
• Use the appliance out of children's reach. Prevent them from pulling the mains cord.
• Never use the appliance if the mains plug, the mains cord or the appliance itself is damaged.
• To maintain perfect performance of the unique "Café Gourmet" brewing system, it is of the greatest importance that you descale the appliance regularly. For the best results we advise to let the vinegar run through the coffeemaker twice. (See also section "Descaling".)
• Never immerse the appliance in water. (See section "Cleaning".)
• Fill the water tank with fresh cold water only.
• When you intend to take the Café to some other place, first remove the mains plug from the wall socket. Then remove the appliance plug from the appliance.
• Your new Café Gourmet is modern and exclusively styled, but retains the well-proven "classic" coffee making method of pouring a substantial quantity of hot water onto the fresh ground coffee. But it does so completely automatically! So now the full flavour of real poured coffee is combined with the most modern comfort.
• After all the coffee has dripped into the jug you may remove the mains cord from your Café Gourmet and take the appliance wherever you wish to savour your coffee: at the dinner table, or perhaps in another room. The special hot plate of the Café Gourmet will keep the coffee warm for a considerable time.

Before first use

• Operate the Café Gourmet once without filling the filter with ground coffee. (See section "Making coffee".)
• Next, clean the removable parts as described in section "Cleaning".

Cleaning

• You can clean the Café Gourmet with a damp cloth. Always remove the plug from the mains outlet before cleaning the appliance.
• The removable parts can be washed in hot soapy water. Rinse with clean hot water and dry.

Making coffee

• Take the jug (with lid) out of the appliance.
• Open the cover of the water tank.
• Fill the water tank with the required quantity of water using the jug (fig. 2). (Ensure that the water level is not lower than the minimum mark and not higher than the maximum mark.)

Use fresh cold water only.

The left hand side level indications correspond with large cups (125 ml).

The right hand side level indications correspond with smaller cups (85 ml).

• Swing the filter support out of the appliance (fig. 3 and 4).
• Place a filter paper type 102 into the filter holder (fig. 5).

Do not forget to fold the rims.

With some models a permanent filter is supplied. Paper filters are then not required.

Fill the filter paper evenly with the required quantity of ground coffee (fig. 6).

When you use large cups, it is advised to take one full (heaped) measuring spoonful of ground coffee for each cup.

When you use smaller cups, it is advised to take one level (flat) measuring spoonful of ground coffee for each cup.

Use fast-filter ground coffee. If you grind the coffee yourself, do not grind it to a fine powder.

• Swing the filter support back into the appliance until well-seated (fig. 7).
• Position the jug with the lid in place on the hot plate (fig. 8).
• Switch the Café Gourmet on. The pilot light will illuminate (fig. 9). The brewing process begins now.

The "drip-stop" (automatic stop-valve) ensures that no coffee will drip on the hot plate if you

• remove the jug from the appliance for a moment during the brewing process;
• remove the jug after making coffee. (You can then leave the filter holder in the appliance.)

Note: When placing the jug into the appliance, ensure that the lid is always fitted to the jug! If the lid has not been placed, the "drip-stop" will block the outlet opening of the filter, so that no coffee drips into the jug.

Coffee is ready

• When the last coffee has dripped out of the filter, you can take the jug (with the lid) out of the appliance (fig. 10).
• If you do not intend to drink all of the coffee now (fig. 11), you can put the jug with the remainder of the coffee back on the hot plate. In this case, replace the jug rightaway (fig. 12).
• The hot plate will keep the coffee at the best temperature. Yet, coffee is at its best directly after it has been made!
• When you intend to take the Café Gourmet to another place (e.g. to another room):
• Switch the appliance off. (Pilot light will go out.)
• Remove the mains plug from the wall socket.
• After that remove the appliance plug from the appliance (fig. 13).

Then you may move the appliance (fig. 14). The hot plate will keep the coffee warm for a considerable time.

• After drinking coffee, swing the filter support out of the appliance (fig. 15).
• Lift the filter holder with the paper filter out of the filter support (fig. 16).
• You can throw away the used paper filter and the ground coffee (fig. 17).
• Do not forget to switch off the coffee maker (fig. 18).

Making more coffee immediately

If you have made coffee and wish to make some more immediately, first switch the appliance off. You may then fill the water tank again. When doing so, pour the first quantity of cold water against the temperature sensor (in the centre of the lid) (fig. 19). This will make the outlet opening under the water tank close again.

Descaling

Descale your coffee maker regularly. With normal use (two full jugs a day) the following rule applies: hardness up to 18 °DH (22.5 °Clarke) - 2 or 3 times a year; hardness over 18 °DH (22.5 °Clarke) - 4 or 5 times a year.

Your water supply company can inform you about the hardness of your water.

• Fill the water tank half with ordinary vinegar.
• Position the coffee jug with cover, the filter support and the filter holder into the appliance.
• Switch the coffee maker on.
• When all the vinegar has passed through, switch the coffee maker off.
• After four minutes (or more) repeat the descaling procedure using the same vinegar.
• Rinse the coffee jug, cover and filter holder.
• Let the appliance work twice more with only water to rinse away the vinegar and any remaining scale.
• Wash the coffee jug, cover and filter holder with hot soapy water. Rinse and dry them.

- If ever the hot water outlet opening should become blocked, you can remove the insert (flexible material) (fig. 20) and clean it separately. Do not forget to replace the insert before using the appliance again!
