Frequently Asked Questions - HVAC 3 PCE Instruments

How do I measure differential pressure with the HVAC 3?
Connect the pressure hoses to the + and - ports. Select the ΔP mode. Zero the meter before measurement. The display shows the pressure difference.
Can I measure air velocity directly?
Yes, use the optional pitot tube (not included) or connect a thermoanemometer probe. Select Air Velocity mode and follow the probe instructions.
What type of battery does the HVAC 3 use?
It uses a standard 9V alkaline battery. Open the compartment on the back with a screwdriver to replace it.
How do I switch between units (Pa, inH2O, mbar)?
Press and hold the UNIT button for 2 seconds. The display cycles through available units. Release when the desired unit appears.
What is the maximum pressure the sensor can handle?
The maximum differential pressure is 5000 Pa (approx. 20 inH2O). Exceeding this may damage the sensor.
How to perform a zero calibration?
Ensure no pressure applied. Press the ZERO button. The display should read 0.00. Do this before each measurement set.
The display shows 'OL'. What does it mean?
OL indicates overrange. The input signal exceeds the measurement range. Reduce the applied pressure or select a higher range (if available).
How often should I recalibrate the device?
PCE Instruments recommends annual recalibration to maintain accuracy. Send it to an authorized service center.
Can I use the HVAC 3 for negative pressure?
Yes, the meter can measure differential pressure in both directions. Connect the higher pressure to '+' and lower to '-' for a positive reading, or reverse for negative.
What is the storage temperature range?
Store the device in a dry environment between -10°C and 60°C. Remove the battery if storing for long periods.

4 Getting started

4.1 Power supply

The battery compartment cover is located on the back of the device. If the battery voltage is too low to ensure reliable measurement values, this will be indicated on the display by the low battery icon. The battery then needs to be replaced. To do so, the screw on the battery compartment cover must be loosened. The cover can then be opened and the battery can be replaced. Mind correct polarity when inserting the battery. After replacing battery, re-attach the cover and fasten the screw again.
