Disc Playing

Playing a CD right away! A

If you want to play a CD right now, choose to use your Discman on house current. Other choices are the following three: rechargeable battery, dry batteries (see "Power Sources") and car battery.

1 Make connections.

Connect the supplied headphones with remote control to the PHONES/REMOTE jack firmly. Also connect the supplied AC power adaptor to the DC IN 4.5V jack of your Discman and a wall outlet. If the AC power adaptor does not fit the wall outlet, use the AC plug adaptor.

2 Place a CD.

① Slide OPEN to open the lid.

② Fit the CD to the pivot with the label side up.

3 Play a CD.

① Press on the remote control.

② Adjust the volume.

To remove the CD

Remove the CD while pressing the pivot.

Notes on controlling the volume with the remote control

Set the VOL (volume) control on the remote control to MAX. Then adjust the volume on the Discman to the level that you want to be the maximum for adjusting the volume with the remote control.

On display

  • When you press or (when RESUME is set to OFF), the total number of the tracks in the CD and the total playing time appear for 2 seconds.
  • During play, the track number and the elapsed playing time of the current track appear.
  • Between the tracks, the time to the beginning of the next track will appear with the " - " indication.
  • During pause, the elapsed playing time of the current point flashes.

Notes on Handling CDs

  • To keep the CD clean, handle it by its edge. Do not touch the surface.
  • Do not stick paper or tape onto the CD.
  • Do not expose the CD to direct sunlight or heat sources such as hot air ducts. Do not leave the CD in a car parked in direct sunlight.

Playing tracks repeatedly (Repeat Play) B

You can play track repeatedly in normal, INTRO PGM, shuffle or RMS (Random Music Sensor) play modes. Repeat all the tracks or only one track.

To repeat all the tracks

Press REPEAT/ENTER during play. "REPEAT" appears.

To cancel repeat play, press REPEAT/ENTER again.

To repeat a single track

1 Press REPEAT/ENTER while the track you want to repeat is playing. "REPEAT" appears.

2 Press PLAY MODE repeatedly until "1" appears.

To repeat another track, press or

To cancel repeat play, press REPEAT/ENTER again.

Playing only the tracks you want (INTRO PGM play) C

You can choose and play your favorite tracks by scanning through the beginning of each track in a CD.

1 During play, press PLAY MODE

repeatedly until "INTRO PGM"flashes.

2 Press to start scanning.

The Discman plays the first 15 seconds of each track and "INTRO PGM" flashes faster.

3 Press REPEAT/ENTER while the track you want is playing. To skip the track, press or just wait for the next track

When you go through the CD, "INTRO PGM" stops flashing and the tracks you chose play automatically.

To finish programming before hearing

through the CD, press II. The selected tracks are played.

To cancel INTRO PGM play, press PLAY MODE until no play mode is indicated in the display.

Playing tracks in random order (Shuffle Play) D

You can play the tracks on a CD in random order.

During play, press PLAY MODE repeatedly, until "SHUFFLE" appears.

The tracks play in random order.

To cancel shuffle play, press PLAY MODE repeatedly until no play mode is indicated in the display.

Playing tracks in the order you want (RMS play) E

You can program up to 22nd tracks to play in any order you choose.

1 During play, press PLAY MODE repeatedly until "RMS" flashes.
2 Press or to choose a track. The track number and the playing order appear.
3 Press REPEAT/ENTER to program the track.
4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 to program the remaining tracks.
5 Press

"RMS" stops flashing and the tracks you chose play in the order you specified.

To cancel RMS play, press PLAY MODE until "RMS" disappears.

To check the program

During programming:

Press REPEAT/ENTER before step 5.

During RMS play:

Press PLAY MODE repeatedly until "RMS" flashes, then press REPEAT/ENTER.

Each time you press the button, the track numbers appear in the order you specified.

Using other functions

To enjoy more powerful bass sound

You can enjoy a powerful bass-boosted sound.

Press Digital MEGA BASS to select

BASS or BASS . BASS is more effective.

To prevent sound from skipping [G] The ESP (Electronic Shock Protection) function prevents the sound from skipping by using a buffer memory that stores music data for approx. 10 seconds. Use this function when listening during a walk or playing in a car.

Press ESP.

The ESP indication appears.

To lock the buttons H

You can lock your Discman against any accidental operations. (You can still operate the unit with the remote control.)

Slide HOLD in the direction of arrow. When you press any button, you cannot operate the unit.

To unlock, slide HOLD back.

To protect your hearing (AVLS)

The AVLS (Automatic Volume Limiter System) function keeps down the maximum volume to protect your ears.

Set AVLS to LIMIT.

The AVLS indication appears.

To resume playing from the point you stopped the CD (Resume Play) J

Normally, every time you stop and play, playing starts from the beginning of the CD. The resume play function, however, lets you listen to from the point at which you last turned off the Discman.

Set RESUME to ON.

To cancel resume play, set RESUME to OFF.

To turn off the beep

You can turn off the beep that sounds as you operate your Discman.

Disconnect the power source (AC power adaptor, rechargeable battery or alkaline batteries). While you press and hold down on the main unit, connect the power source again.

Connecting to other stereo equipment K

You can listen to the CD through other stereo equipment, or record a CD on a cassette tape or a MiniDisc. Refer to the instruction manual of the other equipment for details. Before making connections, turn off each piece of equipment.

Using the connecting cord

  • When you use a connecting cord, the Digital MEGA BASS system does not work on any output from this unit.

Using the optical digital connecting cord

  • When you use digital equipment with this unit, use the AC power adaptor. If you use a rechargeable battery or alkaline batteries, the optical digital signal will not be output from the unit. (Un expected phenomena may occur, for instance, you cannot record a CD on connected equipment.)
  • Digital MEGA BASS system works on output from the PHONES/REMOTE jack, but does not work on optical digital output from the OPTICAL (DIGITAL)/LINE OUT jack.
  • The ESP function does not work with any output from this unit.

Playing a CD in a car L

You can use your Discman in a car.

To connect your Discman to a car cassette deck, you need the following accessories: Mount kit CPM-450PC/CPM-300PC (Mount plate ^+ Car battery cord ^+ Car connecting pack)

or Car battery cord DCC-E245 and Car connecting pack CPA-8/CPA-9 Refer to the instruction manual of each accessory for details.

When you use the mount kit (CPM-450PC or the equivalent)

Attach the car mount adaptor supplied to the mount plate before installing the Discman.

Switched ignition function

With this feature, your Discman stops automatically when you turn off the engine of the car. (This function is not possible with some cars depending on the model.)

Using the supplied remote control M

You can use the remote control as the wired remote control.

When you are not using the remote control. slide HOLD in the direction of the arrow. To unlock, slide HOLD back.

Illumination of the display (D-365 world model only)

When using the unit on the AC power adaptor or car battery, the display is always illuminated. (Light of the display goes out when you press and the CD stops.) When you use the unit on the rechargeable battery or alkaline batteries, the display is illuminated for about 5 seconds when you press an operation button.

You can put off the illumination of the display. While you press and hold down PLAY MODE, insert rechargeable battery or alkaline batteries.

Power Sources

Using rechargeable battery N

Charge the rechargeable battery before using it for the first time. You can use either BP-DM10 or BP-DM20 rechargeable battery for this unit. You can use them in the same way, but their charging time and battery life are different. Check the model number of your rechargeable battery before using.

1 Open the lid of the battery compartment.
2 Insert the rechargeable battery so that the word "SONY" is facing the same direction as illustrated inside the lid, and close the lid.
3 Connect the AC power adaptor. The indication "CHG" lights up. Charge for about 2 hours (for BP-DM10) or 3 hours (for BP-DM20). (When the battery has been already charged, "CHG" and "flash.)
4 When fully charged, "CHG" disappears. Disconnect the AC power adaptor.

When to charge the battery

When the battery becomes weak, indication appears in the display. If the battery is used up, "L o b d t" appears in the display. Charge the rechargeable battery. To keep the original battery capacity for a long time, recharge the battery when he battery is used up (discharged).

Notes

  • Charging time varies depending on how the rechargeable battery is used.
  • If the battery is new or has not been used for a long time, it may not be charged completely until you charge and discharge it several times.
  • If the battery life becomes shorter by about half, replace it with Sony BP-DM10 or BP-DM20 rechargeable battery. Do not use any other rechargeable battery (R6 type rechargeable battery, etc.).

Using dry batteries

1 Open the lid of the battery compartment.

When to replace the dry batteries

Using the battery case P

You can use the unit for longer time by using the battery case, in addition to the rechargeable battery or batteries in the battery compartment of the unit. Batteries in the battery case and the rechargeable battery or batteries in the battery compartment are consumed together.

1 Hook the battery case onto the Discman and fasten the screw.

2 Open the lid of the battery case.

3 Insert two LR6 (size AA) alkaline batteries by matching the and to the diagram inside the battery compartment and close the lid.
