Frequently Asked Questions - VE802 ATEN

How do I set up the ATEN VE802 extender?
Connect the HDMI source to the VE802T (Transmitter) using an HDMI cable. Connect a Cat 5e/6/6a cable from the VE802T's HDBaseT port to the VE802R's (Receiver) HDBaseT port. Then connect the display to the VE802R via HDMI. Power the VE802T with the included adapter (POH powers the receiver, but an extra adapter can be used if needed). Optional: connect RS-232 or IR devices for remote control.
What is the maximum transmission distance for the VE802?
Up to 70 meters when using Cat 6a or higher cable. With Cat 5e/6 cable, distance may be slightly shorter; ATEN strongly recommends Cat 5e or above for optimal performance.
What type of cable is required for the HDBaseT connection?
A shielded twisted pair (STP) Cat 5e/6/6a cable is required. For best performance over long distances, use low-skew cable like ATEN 2L-2801 (350 MHz).
How does Power over HDBaseT (POH) work on the VE802?
The VE802T supplies power to the VE802R through the same Cat cable, eliminating the need for a separate power supply at the receiver. If additional power is required, an optional adapter can be plugged into the VE802R.
Can I control the source device from the display side using RS-232?
Yes, the VE802 supports bi-directional RS-232 pass-through. You can connect a controller (e.g., PC) to the VE802T and a serial device (e.g., touchscreen) to the VE802R, enabling remote control of the source or display.
How do I use the IR control feature?
Connect an IR transmitter to the VE802T and an IR receiver to the VE802R (or vice versa for reverse direction). The IR signals pass through the Cat cable, allowing you to control the source device from the display location. The system supports IR frequencies from 30 kHz to 60 kHz.
What do the LEDs on the VE802 indicate?
The Power LED (green) indicates the unit is receiving power. The Link LED (orange) is solid when the HDBaseT connection is good, and flashes if there is a problem. The HDMI Out LED (on the receiver) is solid when an HDCP-encrypted signal is detected, flashes without HDCP, and off when no HDMI signal is present.
Does the VE802 support 4K video?
Yes, the VE802 supports resolutions up to 4K x 2K (including 3D and Deep Color). It is compatible with HDCP 1.4 and 2.2 (implied by HDMI 1.4 support, but specifically mentioned as HDCP compatible).
What is EDID Expert and how does it help?
EDID Expert automatically configures optimal EDID settings for the connected display, ensuring smooth power-up, high-quality display, and the best resolution across different screens. It helps avoid compatibility issues.
How do I update the firmware on the VE802?
The VE802 has a firmware upgrade switch (F/W Upgrade) on both units. This port is reserved for technical support; contact your dealer or ATEN support for firmware updates. Do not attempt upgrading without proper instructions.

Chapter 1 Introduction

Overview

The VE802 HDMI HDBaseT-Lite Extender extends an HDBaseT signal up to 70m from the HDBaseT source using one Cat 5e/6 cable. VE802 supports RS-232 and IR signaling pass-through, allowing you to control the HDMI source device from the remote unit (VE802R) while also granting access to the HDMI display device from the local unit (VE802T). IR signals can also be extended in both directions. The VE802 features Power over HDBaseT (POH) which can send power over Cat 5e/6 cable without an additional power supply. The VE802 is HDMI (3D, Deep Color,4kx2k) and HDCP compatible. The VE802 is perfect for a digital entertainment center or any installation that requires superior video quality.

Features

  • HDBaseT Connectivity – extends an HDMI connection over a long distance via one Cat 5e/6a cable
  • HDBaseT Anti-jamming – resists signal interference during high-quality video transmission using HDBaseT technology
  • EDID Expert – configures optimum EDID settings for smooth power-up, high-quality display and use of the best resolution across different screens
POH (Power over HDBaseT) – supplies power from Transmitter to Receiver over a long distance via one Cat 5e/6a cable
  • A bi-directional RS-232 serial port to connect with a high-end system for more device control
  • A bi-directional IR channel for IR signal control; IR transmission is processed one way at a time
◆ Supports IR signal frequencies from 30kHz to 60kHz*
  • Rack-Mountable

Note: * The included IR receiver supports full frequency IR signals from 30kHz to 60kHz. The IR receiver cable included with the package, however, only supports signals from 30kHz to 56 kHz.

Requirements

Display

◆ An HDMI display capable of the highest required resolution

Source Device

The following equipment is required:

◆ A source device with an HDMI port

Cables

  • Cat 5e cable is required to connect the Transmitter and Receiver units. Cable of a lower standard will result in degrading the video signal. We strongly recommend using Cat 5e cables or above.
  • For better quality over longer distances, we suggest using 2L – 2801 (350 MHz) Low Skew Cable.

Maximum Cable Distances

Connection Distance
Computer to Transmitter (VE802T) 1.8 m
Transmitter (VE802T) to Receiver (VE802R)70 m^*
Receiver (VE802R) to monitor 1.8 m

Note:* 70m is the maximum cable distance when using a Cat 6a or above cable.
