How do I use the Black & Decker RC1805 rice cooker?

Measure rice using the included measuring cup (up to 10 cups for this model). Wash rice thoroughly under cold water to remove excess starch. Place washed rice in the cooking bowl and add the correct amount of water as per the scale inside the bowl. Insert the cooking bowl, plug in the appliance, and press the control lever to start cooking. The cook indicator will light up and go out when cooking is complete, then the keep-warm indicator will light up automatically.

How much water should I add for a given amount of rice?

Can I cook other grains like quinoa or oatmeal in this rice cooker?

How do I clean the rice cooker?

What does the keep-warm light mean?

The keep-warm indicator lights up automatically when the cooking cycle ends. It means the rice cooker is maintaining a warm temperature to keep the rice ready to serve. The control lever stays in the warm position. For fluffier rice, stir the rice with the rice spoon just after the keep-warm light comes on.

Why doesn't the control lever stay down during cooking?

The control lever automatically switches to the warm mode when cooking is complete. This is normal. If the lever pops up prematurely, the cooking process may have finished. Ensure the cooking bowl is properly fitted and not overloaded. Do not interfere with the lever's automatic action.

Can I use metal utensils with the non-stick bowl?

No. To prevent damaging the non-stick coating, always use the provided plastic rice spoon or rubber/wood utensils. Metal utensils can scratch and ruin the coating.

Is the rice cooker dishwasher safe?

No, the manual explicitly states not to wash any part of the appliance in a dishwasher. Hand washing is recommended for all removable parts.

Unpacking

◆ Remove all packaging from the appliance.
◆ Wash the cooking bowl, lid, steaming tray, measuring cup and serving spoon in warm sudsy water before first use.

Use

Measuring the rice (fig. A & B)

The measuring cup (5) can be used to measure the rice. Each cup of uncooked rice normally gives two bowls of cooked rice. Do not exceed the quantities indicated on the inside of the cooking bowl (6).

◆ Measure the rice with the measuring cup (5).

Determining the required water quantity (fig. A & B)

The amount of water required is indicated on the scale (7) on the inside of the cooking bowl (6).

◆ Measure the water quantity with the measuring cup (5) according to the table below.

Warning!

Do not interfere with the automatic action of the control lever by preventing it from switching to the warm mode.
Exercise caution when handling the appliance as the cooking bowl and accessories get hot during use. These may remain hot for some time after use.
- Steam can escape from the unit when the accessories or lid is removed.
◆ Do not use the cooking bowl to wash the rice.
◆ Measure the rice.
◆ Wash the rice thoroughly under cold running water to remove excess starch.
◆ Put the washed rice into the cooking bowl (6).
- Add the required amount of water.
◆ Put the cooking bowl into the appliance.
- Ensure the cooking bowl is correctly fitted in good contact with the heating plate (8).
◆ Plug the supply cord into a suitable electric supply.

The cook indicator (3) will light up.

◆ Press the control lever (1) to start the cooking process.

The cook indicator will go out when the cooking process is finished. After that the keep-warm indicator (2) will light up automatically.

Note: For the best rice results stir the rice just after the keep-warm indicator comes on. Stirring the rice with he rice spoon allow the steam to escape. This will give fluffier rice.

Cleaning and maintenance

• Warning! Before cleaning and maintenance, remove the plug from the socket and allow the appliance to cool.
  ◆ Do not wash any part of the appliance in a dishwasher.
  ◆ Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth.
  ◆ Do not use scouring pads.
  ◆ If necessary, use a mild detergent to remove spots.
