AJA PAK Media
AJA's Ki Pro Ultra 12G video recorder lets you record edit-friendly 4K, 2K, or HD files directly to removable AJA PAK Media. Once removed from the Ki Pro Ultra 12G, the PAK Media can be inserted in the PAK Dock Pro, allowing you to rapidly transfer files that can be used immediately in your non-linear editing system.
NOTE: When you order your PAK Media you can choose the formatting, either HFS+ or ExFAT.
AJA PAK Options
The PAK 256, PAK 512, PAK 1000, and PAK 2000 options are high-capacity Solid State Drives encased in a protective housing with rugged connection engineered to handle the rigors of repeated use in the field.
NOTE: The newer PAK 256 and PAK 512 (R1 and above), and the PAK 1000 and PAK 2000 media support recording all formats and frame rates up to and including 4K/UltraHD 50, 59.94,60 at ProRes 422 (HQ). Legacy PAK 256 (R0) and PAK 512 (R0) media have slightly lower capabilities, and are able to record up to 4K/UltraHD 30.
Installation
What's In The Box?
When you unpack your product you'll find the following components:
- AJA PAK Dock Pro Unit
- USB 3.2 Gen2 cable - Type-A to Type-C
- USB 3.2 Gen2 cable - Type-C to Type-C
Please save all packaging in case you need to ship the product in the future.
PAK Dock Pro Installation Procedure
-
Unpack and place the PAK Dock Pro on a flat, stable surface near your host computer.
-
Connect the PAK Dock Pro to your host computer using one of the supplied USB 3.2 Gen2 cables.
Formatting PAK Media
PAK Media is available pre-formatted either as HFS+ (native to the macOS file system) or ExFAT (suitable for PCs).
Re-formatting PAK Media is best accomplished using your Ki Pro video recorder, as that creates the correct directory structure for playback and recording (a root folder named "AJA"). Refer to your AJA Ki Pro recorder's documentation for detailed formatting instructions.
PAK Media can also be directly formatted using a computer, by mounting the media in your connected PAK Dock Pro and using standard computer media formatting procedures, but you will need to manually create an AJA folder at the root of the drive.
NOTE: To use PAK Media which is formatted as HFS+ in a Windows OS computer, a third party HFS+ application such as Mediafour's MacDrive is required.
Valid Transfer Files
Valid media files must have video formats and frame rates supported by your Ki Pro recorder model, be it full raster or proxy, and if audio is included it must be 24-bit 48kHz. Files copied to PAK Media that do not meet these criteria may not appear in your Ki Pro recorder's web UI or front panel UI when you review clips.
Media files should only be transferred to and from the "AJA" folder on PAK Media. Files located elsewhere on that PAK Media, even if they are valid, will not appear in your Ki Pro recorder's web UI or front panel UI.
Operation
Inserting Media
To properly insert media into the PAK Dock Pro, orient the media so that the side with the AJA logo is facing you and the logo is inverted. Then place the connector end of the media into the PAK Dock Pro slot. Push the PAK Media all the way into the slot gently, but firmly, until you feel the connector seat solidly.
Once the PAK Media is inserted into the PAK Dock Pro, your operating system should mount the PAK Media the same as any other external volume or disk drive. Depending upon your operating system version, you may see a disk icon appear on the desktop or within the operating system file manager.
After the PAK Media is mounted by your host computer's operating system, you can copy files from and to the PAK Media. You may also delete files from the PAK Media. You may copy virtually any file to the PAK Media outside of the "AJA" folder.
To add files to the PAK Media for playback on your AJA Ki Pro recorder, you must properly encode the files as QuickTime and place them in the "AJA" folder on the PAK Media.
Unmounting Procedure
To remove PAK Media from your operating system, use the methods typically used for gracefully un-mounting/ejecting any type of removable media.
Disconnecting the PAK Dock Pro
Before disconnecting the PAK Dock Pro, be sure to first un-mount/eject the media using the proper procedure as noted earlier for your operating system.
