Frequently Asked Questions - 9729 STI

Why is my STI 9729 detector beeping intermittently?
Intermittent beeping usually indicates a low battery. Replace the 9V battery with a new one. If beeping persists, dust buildup may be the cause; clean the detector with a vacuum or soft cloth.
How do I test my STI 9729 smoke detector?
Press and hold the test/silence button for a few seconds. The alarm should sound loudly (85 dB). If the sound is weak or absent, replace the battery or the detector.
Where should I install the STI 9729 detector?
Install on the ceiling in the center of the room, or on a wall 6-12 inches below the ceiling. Avoid kitchens, bathrooms, and garages to prevent false alarms. Follow local fire safety codes.
How often should I clean my detector?
Clean the detector once a month by gently vacuuming the vents or wiping with a damp cloth. Do not use solvents or cleaners, as they may damage the sensor.
What does the red flashing LED mean?
A red flash every 40-60 seconds indicates normal operation. A rapid flash or constant light may signal a malfunction or active alarm. Refer to the manual for specific patterns.
How long does the battery last in the STI 9729?
Under normal conditions, a fresh 9V alkaline battery lasts about one year. Replace it annually or when you hear a low-battery chirp (every 30-60 seconds).
Can I silence a false alarm?
Yes, press the test/silence button to temporarily quiet the alarm for about 10 minutes. Clear the source of the false alarm (e.g., steam, smoke from cooking) before resetting.
What should I do if the detector chirps after battery replacement?
Remove the battery, press and hold the test button for 15 seconds to discharge residual charge, then insert a new 9V battery. If chirping continues, the detector may need replacement.
How do I know if my STI 9729 detector is expired?
Look for the manufacture date on the back of the unit. Detectors should be replaced every 10 years. If the unit is over 10 years old, replace it immediately.
Is the STI 9729 detector suitable for detecting carbon monoxide?
No, the STI 9729 is a smoke detector only. It does not detect carbon monoxide (CO). For CO protection, install a separate CO alarm. Some combination units are available.
