Frequently Asked Questions - SIA10 Megger

How do I perform an insulation test with the SIA10?
Turn the rotary switch to the desired test voltage (e.g., 500 V), connect the test leads, and press the TEST button. The reading will be displayed after a few seconds. For a polarization index test, hold the button for 10 minutes.
How do I change the batteries in the SIA10?
Turn off the meter and disconnect all leads. Slide the battery cover off the back, replace the 6 AA batteries, and close the cover securely. Use only alkaline or rechargeable NiMH batteries.
What does the 'OL' reading mean?
'OL' means Over Limit, indicating the resistance is above the measurement range. For instance, if you are in the 100 MΩ range and see 'OL', the insulation resistance exceeds 100 MΩ. This is acceptable for most tests.
How often should I calibrate the SIA10?
Megger recommends annual calibration to ensure accuracy. Send the unit to a certified calibration laboratory. The meter has a calibration due date reminder.
Can I use the SIA10 on live circuits?
No. The SIA10 is designed for de-energized circuits only. Always verify the circuit is dead before testing. The meter has a voltage warning feature to alert you if voltage is present.
How do I download data from the SIA10?
Connect the meter to a PC via the USB cable (optional accessory). Use Megger's PowerDB software to download, analyze, and generate reports. Bluetooth models allow wireless transfer.
What is the maximum test current for continuity?
The continuity test provides a 200 mA test current as required by IEC 61557-4. This ensures reliable detection of low resistance connections.
The display is blank. What could be wrong?
Check if the batteries are installed correctly and have sufficient charge. Replace them if needed. If the problem persists, the meter may need service. Do not attempt internal repairs.
What does the 'Err' message mean?
'Err' indicates an error condition, such as a faulty connection or internal malfunction. Disconnect all leads, restart the meter. If error persists, contact Megger support.
How should I store the SIA10 when not in use?
Store in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Remove batteries if storing for more than a month. Use the provided carrying case to protect from dust and impacts.

User guide

Megger test leads have been designed to be safe when used with original Megger equipment for which they have

been designated as an approved accessory. All models are safety rated to IEC 61010-031 over-voltage category rating and maximum voltage as marked on the leadset.

Refer to this User Guide

Double insulated Class II

CE Complies with relevant EU directives

IEC 61010-2-030 defines measurement categories I to IV relating to transient overvoltages and locations within electrical installations. An example of category II is a mains socket outlet, category III is the wiring between the socket outlets and the consumer unit, category IV is the supply to the consumer cut-out from the distribution network transformer.

For further information on category ratings visit the relevant product page on www.megger.com

⚠ Safety Warnings

All safety warnings and precautions provided with the original Megger equipment to be used with these leads must be read and understood before these test leads are used. They must be observed during use. (Safety Warnings are provided within the user guides for Megger test equipment, copies available from www.megger.com)

  • Check for damage before each use.
    ■ DO NOT USE if any part of this lead or terminations are damaged.
    ■ Replacement fuses must be of the correct type and rating as marked on the leadset.
    ■ The safety rating of any combination of instrument and leadset is taken as the lowest category rating statement visible when in use.
    ■ Use of non-Megger test lead accessories including probe tips, covers and clips will invalidate the safety category rating of the leadset.

NOTE

THESE TEST LEADS MUST ONLY BE USED BY SUITABLY TRAINED AND COMPETENT PERSONS

Fused test leads may have different resistance values to standard non-fused test leads. It is important to adjust the null-offset value on the instrument prior to use. Refer to the instrument manual for instructions.

Users of this equipment and/or their employers are reminded that Health and Safety Legislation requires them to carry out valid risk assessments of all electrical work so as to identify potential sources of electrical danger and risk of electrical injury such as inadvertent short circuits. Where the assessments show that the risk is significant then the use of fused test leads constructed in accordance with the HSE guidance note GS38 'Electrical Test Equipment for use by Electricians' should be considered.

Clean with a damp cloth when necessary and ensure item is dry prior to use.
