Frequently Asked Questions - ST36A Mercury

How often should I change the gear oil in my Mercury ST36A?
Change the gear oil after the first 10 hours of use, then every 50 hours or annually. Use Mercury Premium Gear Oil.
What is the proper fuel mixture for the ST36A?
The ST36A requires a 50:1 fuel/oil ratio. Use unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 87 and Mercury 2-Stroke Outboard Oil.
How do I start a cold Mercury ST36A?
1. Attach the emergency stop lanyard. 2. Open the air vent on the fuel tank. 3. Squeeze the primer bulb until firm. 4. Set the throttle to 'Start' position. 5. Pull the recoil starter firmly.
What should I do if the engine overheats?
Stop the engine immediately. Check the water intake for debris. Ensure the cooling system is not blocked. If overheating persists, consult a certified Mercury technician.
How do I winterize my Mercury ST36A?
Run the engine in a tank of fresh water with antifreeze. Drain the fuel system or add stabilizer. Remove the propeller and lubricate the shaft. Store in a dry, ventilated area.
What type of spark plug does the ST36A use?
Use NGK BP6HS or equivalent spark plug. Set the gap to 0.6 mm (0.024 in). Replace annually.
My ST36A won't start. What are common causes?
Check the fuel supply, spark plug, and emergency stop lanyard. Ensure the fuel mixture is correct. If no spark, inspect the ignition system. Refer to the manual for detailed troubleshooting.
Can I use ethanol-blended fuel?
Yes, up to 10% ethanol (E10) is acceptable. Higher ethanol content can damage fuel system components. Use fuel stabilizer if stored for more than 30 days.
How do I replace the propeller?
Shift to neutral and remove the cotter pin and nut. Slide off the old propeller. Install the new propeller with the thrust washer, then tighten the nut to 25-30 Nm (18-22 ft-lb) and insert a new cotter pin.
What maintenance is required after each use?
Flush the cooling system with fresh water for 5 minutes. Wipe down the engine. Inspect the propeller for damage. Check fuel lines for leaks. Apply corrosion spray to exposed metal parts.
