Frequently Asked Questions - RET 230F DANFOSS

What is the temperature range of the Danfoss RET 230F thermostat?
The Danfoss RET 230F has a temperature range of 5–10 °C. This is a low-temperature model typically used for floor heating or frost protection.
What is the power supply requirement for the RET 230F?
The thermostat requires a 230 V AC ±15% supply at 50/60 Hz.
Can the RET 230F be used with electric heating systems?
Yes, it is suitable for switching heating systems on and off, including boilers and electric heaters, as long as the load does not exceed 3(1) A.
How do I wire the Danfoss RET 230F thermostat?
The RET 230F has a 2-wire connection. Connect the live and switched live wires according to the wiring diagram in the manual. Ensure the power is off before wiring.
What is the IP rating of the RET 230F, and can it be installed in a bathroom?
The IP rating is IP20, which means it is protected against solid objects larger than 12 mm but not against water. It should not be installed in wet areas like bathrooms unless protected from moisture.
How do I set the temperature on the RET 230F?
Turn the rotary dial to the desired temperature within the 5–10 °C range. The thermostat will switch the heating on/off to maintain the set temperature.
Why does my heating not come on even though the thermostat is set above room temperature?
Check that the power supply is on and the thermostat is wired correctly. Also ensure the heating system's programmer or timer is set to 'on'. The thermostat only operates when the system allows it.
Can I use the RET 230F with a floor heating system?
Yes, the RET 230F is specifically designed for low-temperature applications like floor heating, with a range of 5–10 °C. For higher temperatures, consider other models.
How should I clean the thermostat?
Wipe the thermostat with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Do not use solvents, abrasive cleaners, or immerse in water.
What should I do if the thermostat is not responding?
Turn off the power at the circuit breaker, wait a minute, then turn it back on. If it still does not work, check the wiring connections and ensure the dial is not stuck. If the problem persists, consult a qualified electrician.

What is a room thermostat?

... an explanation for householders

A room thermostat simply switches the heating system on and off as necessary. It works by sensing the air temperature, switching on the heating when the air temperature falls below the thermostat setting, and switching it off once this set temperature has been reached.

Turning a room thermostat to a higher setting will not make the room heat up any faster. How quickly the room heats up depends on the design of the heating system, for example, the size of boiler and radiators.

Neither does the setting affect how quickly the room cools down. Turning a room thermostat to a lower setting will result in the room being controlled at a lower temperature, and saves energy.

The heating system will not work if a timeswitch or programmer has switched it off.

The way to set and use your room thermostat is to find the lowest temperature setting that you are comfortable with, and then leave it alone to do its job. The best way to do this is to set the room thermostat to a low temperature – say 18°C – and then turn it up by one degree each day until you are comfortable with the temperature. You won’t have to adjust the thermostat further. Any adjustment above this setting will waste energy and cost you more money.

If your heating system is a boiler with radiators, there will usually be only one room thermostat to control the whole house. But you can have different temperatures in individual rooms by installing thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) on individual radiators. If you don't have TRVs, you should choose a temperature that is reasonable for the whole house. If you do have TRVs, you can choose a slightly higher setting to make sure that even the coldest room is comfortable, then prevent any overheating in other rooms by adjusting the TRVs.

Room thermostats need a free flow of air to sense the temperature, so they must not be covered by curtains or blocked by furniture. Nearby electric fires, televisions, wall or table lamps may prevent the thermostat from working properly.
