Can I connect SSDs or only HDDs?
Yes, you can connect both SSDs and HDDs with a SATA III interface. Speeds up to 6 Gbps are supported.
Is a driver required for installation?
For most modern operating systems, the card is natively supported and does not need additional drivers. However, a driver CD is included for legacy systems.
What type of PCIe slot is required?
The card requires a PCI Express x4 or larger slot (x8, x16). It is compatible with PCIe 2.0 and later versions.
Does the card come with a low-profile bracket?
Yes, it includes both a full-height and a low-profile bracket, making it suitable for standard and small form factor cases.

Introduction

The PEXSAT34SFF PCI Express 2.0 SATA Controller Card enables 4 AHCI SATA III connections to be added to a computer through a single internal Mini-SAS (SFF-8087) port.

The Mini-SAS connector with Port Multiplier support allows for multiple SATA drives (up to 7) to be connected using a single cable. When used with our Mini-SAS to 4x SATA breakout cable or Mini-SAS SFF-8087 backplane (accessories not included, SAS drives not supported), you have a complete internal 6Gbps connectivity solution, all from a single card.

Featuring HyperDuo technology, the SATA card offers SSD auto-tiering which lets you balance the performance advantages of SSD storage with the cost-effectiveness and large capacity of standard hard drives. By combining SSD and HDD drives into a single volume (up to 3 SSD + 1 HDD), HyperDuo discreetly works in the background to identify and move frequently accessed files to the faster SSD drive(s) for improved data throughput – up to 80% of SSD performance! (Note: The HyperDuo automatic storage tiering feature is compatible with Windows® XP, Vista, 7 and 8 only)

Compliant with SATA revision 3.0, this PCI Express SATA RAID card delivers up to 6Gbps of data bandwidth; ideal for high performance hard drives and solid state drives (SSD). Plus, the controller card offers an effective hardware RAID solution, with native RAID (0, 1, 1+0) support.

Installation

Hardware Installation

WARNING! PCI Express cards, like all computer equipment, can be severely damaged by static electricity. Be sure that you are properly grounded before opening your computer case or touching your PCI Express card. StarTech.com recommends that you wear an anti-static strap when installing any computer component. If an anti-static strap is unavailable, discharge yourself of any static electricity build-up by touching a large grounded metal surface (such as the computer case) for several seconds. Also be careful to handle the PCI Express card by its edges and not the gold connectors.

  1. Turn your computer off and any peripherals connected to the computer (i.e. Printers, external hard drives, etc.). Unplug the power cable from the rear of the power supply on the back of the computer and disconnect all peripheral devices.
  2. Remove the cover from the computer case. See documentation for your computer system for details.
  3. Locate an open PCI Express x2 slot and remove the metal cover plate on the rear of the computer case (Refer to documentation for your computer system for details.).

NOTE: This card will work in PCI Express slots of additional lanes (i.e. x4, x8, or x16 slots).

  1. Gently insert the card into the open PCI Express slot and fasten the bracket to the rear of the case.

NOTE: If installing the card into a small form factor/low profile system, replacing the pre-installed full profile bracket with the included low profile installation bracket may be necessary.

  1. Connect a SFF-8087 cable (not included) from the card to your SATA device(s).

  2. Place the cover back onto the computer case.

  3. Insert the power cable into the socket on the power supply and reconnect all other connectors removed in Step 1.

Driver Installation

Windows XP

NOTE: The latest driver is available from www.startech.com.

  1. Once the computer has started and the operating system is fully loaded, insert the provided Driver CD into the computer's CD/DVD drive.

  2. AutoPlay should give you the option to browse the files on the CD or automatically open the CD.

Windows can perform the same action each time you insert a disk or connect a device with this kind of file. Pictures What do you want Windows to do? Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer Take out action Always do the selected action OK Cancel

If AutoPlay does not start, go into "My Computer" and access the CD/DVD drive that the CD is in.

HyperDuo Configuration

HyperDuo offers the following two modes that you can configure using either of the procedures outlined in the following sections:

  • Safe mode creates a virtual disk that is optimized for best fault tolerance – the frequently accessed files copied to the SSD for performance are also stored on the HDD. It is safe to use with hard drives that contain existing data. Virtual disks created in safe mode can also be partially rebuilt if the SSD fails, but not if the HDD fails.
  • Capacity mode creates a virtual disk that is optimized for maximum utilization of the SSD – the frequently accessed files are moved to the SSD (not copied). Virtual disks created in capacity mode have better read and write performance than those created in safe mode. However, they cannot be rebuilt.

WARNING! Capacity mode is a data-destructive process. Please back up all data before using capacity mode.
