How do I select the correct tap setting for my speaker?

Use the front-mounted tap selector switch. For 70.7V systems, choose 1W, 2W, 4W, 8W, or 16W. For 100V systems, choose 2W, 4W, 8W, or 16W. The 8Ω setting bypasses the transformer for direct connection to an 8Ω amplifier. Do not use the 8Ω setting with 70.7V/100V systems.

What is the correct cutout hole size?

The cutout hole diameter is 6 5/16 inches (160.3 mm). Use the provided template to mark and cut the hole.

How do I install the speaker in a drop tile ceiling?

Remove the ceiling tile. Attach the tile bridge to the rear of the tile. Mark and cut the hole. Bring the service loop through the tile bridge and connect to the barrier block. Insert the enclosure from the front and tighten the three dog leg screws until they engage the tile bridge. Do not over-tighten. Finally, install the grille.

Can I install this speaker in a drywall ceiling?

Yes. For existing drywall, mark the cutout and cut the hole. Insert the speaker and tighten dog legs. For new construction, use the optional FA-TR4 bracket (not UL evaluated) mounted between studs. Then follow the same procedure.

What is the maximum ceiling thickness the dog legs can accommodate?

As shipped, dog legs accommodate up to 1 1/4 inches. For thicknesses up to 2 inches, unscrew and flip the dog legs. Do not over-tighten in any configuration.

How do I wire multiple FAP40T speakers?

Connect speakers in parallel using 70.7V or 100V distribution. Ensure total tap wattage does not exceed amplifier output. For example, four speakers set to 8W each sum to 32W, suitable for a 120W amplifier. Maintain polarity (red dot = +).

What is the polarity marking?

The barrier block has a red dot next to the positive (+) terminal. Always observe correct polarity when connecting.

Is a conduit connection required?

The enclosure has a 1/2-inch knockout for conduit. A UL-recognized conduit connector should be used. The connection cavity is not intended for use as a junction box.

What safety considerations should I keep in mind?

Use the integrated suspension ring to attach a support wire to an anchor point above the ceiling for seismic safety. Do not over-tighten dog leg screws. Ensure amplifier output does not exceed 16W RMS at 8Ω per speaker.

Can I use the 8Ω setting with a 70.7V system?

No. The 8Ω setting bypasses the transformer and is intended only for direct connection to 8Ω amplifiers. Using it with a 70.7V or 100V system will damage the speaker or amplifier.

4" In-Ceiling Speaker System

Drop Tile Ceiling Installation:

1. Remove the 2' × 2' or 2' × 4' tile.
2. Align the tile bridge on the rear of the tile in the desired position.
3. Using the template provided mark the cutout circle with a marker and cut a 6^5/16 (160.3mm) hole.
4. Replace tile into grid.
5. Bring service loop from rear of the tile, through the tile bridge to the access panel located on the side of the Enclosure. Terminate the service loop to the barrier block connection provided. (Red dot = "+" please note polarity). A 18 " through hole is provided to facilitate conduit. A UL recognized conduit connector should be used to terminate conduit. Connection cavity is not intended for use as a junction box.
6. Insert the enclosure through the front of the tile. Using a standard #2 Phillips screwdriver or screw-gun tighten the three dog leg assemblies until they engage the tile bridge assembly. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN DOG LEG SCREWS!
7. Adjust the front mounted switch to the desired tap setting.
   NOTE: An 8Ω setting is included on the selector switch which bypasses the internal transformer for applications where the FAP40T is to be directly coupled to 8Ω amplifiers.
8. Install the press-fit grille into the front bezel ring. Push the baffle upwards until the baffle is flush with the bezel ring.
9. For safety and seismic considerations, a suspension ring is integrated into the input panel section of the unit. Atlas Sound strongly suggests that a support wire be installed from this support point to a suitable anchor point above the ceiling grid. In drop tile applications, this wire can usually be installed from an adjacent tile access near the speaker location.
10. Using the template provided mark the cutout circle in the desired mounting location and cut a 6516 " (160.3mm) hole.
11. Bring service loop from through the hole to the access panel located on the side of the enclosure. Terminate the service loop to the barrier block connection provided (Red dot = "+" please note polarity). A 18 " through hole is provided to facilitate conduit. A UL recognized conduit connector should be used to terminate conduit. Connection cavity is not intended for use as a junction box.
12. Insert the enclosure into hole. Using a standard #2 Phillips screw-driver or screw-gun tighten the three dog leg assemblies until they engage the tile bridge assembly. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN DOG LEG SCREWS!
13. Adjust the front mounted switch to the desired setting. NOTE: A 8Ω setting is included on the selector switch which bypasses the internal transformer for applications where the FAP40 is to be directly coupled to 8Ω amplifiers.

Existing Construction Dry Wall ("Hard Deck") Installation

1. Install the press-fit grille into the front bezel ring. Push the baffle upwards until the baffle is flush with the bezel ring.

New Construction (Drywall Ceilings)

Use of the optional FA-TR4 new construction bracket essentially reserves the speaker mounting location prior to drywall installation in new construction. The bracket mounts between 16" or 24" OC studs and includes a 3 / 8" downward lip to provide a template for the drywall installers to cut around. For final installation please follow the instructions below.

Note: The tile bridge is not to be used in new construction applications where the new construction bracket is utilized.

1. Bring service loop from through the hole in ceiling provided by the pre construction bracket to the access panel located on the side of the Enclosure. Terminate the service loop to the barrier block connection provided (Red dot = "+" please note polarity). A 38 " through hole is provided to facilitate conduit. A UL recognized conduit connector should be used to terminate conduit. Connection cavity is not intended for use as a junction box.

2. Insert the speaker assembly into hole. Using a standard #2 Phillips screwdriver or screw-gun tighten the three dog leg assemblies until they engage the ring provided on the new construction bracket. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN DOG LEG SCREWS!

3. Adjust the front mounted switch to the desired tap setting.
