Precautions
Before using this unit, be sure to read the applicable items of the operating instructions and these safety suggestions carefully.
Afterwards keep them handy for future reference. Take special care to follow the warnings indicated on the unit itself as well as in the operating instructions.
Safety
- Power Source—The unit should be connected to a power supply only of the type described in the operating instructions or as marked on the unit. Use only the AC adaptor or car adaptor described in the operating instructions when recharging.
- Polarization—If the unit is equipped with a polarized AC power plug (a plug having one blade wider than the other), that plug will fit into the AC outlet only one way. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, try reversing the plug. If the plug should still fail to fit, contact your electrician to replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized plug.
- Care of AC adaptor—Take care that the cord of the AC adaptor should be routed so that it is not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon or against it. Never take hold of the AC adaptor if your hand is wet, and always grasp the plug body when connecting or disconnecting it.
- Nonuse Periods—When not in use, be sure to disconnect the AC adaptor from the AC power outlet.
- Batteries—If the set is not used for a long period of time or is used only from an AC power source, remove all the batteries to prevent potential damage due to possible battery leakage. Do not mix batteries (old and new) or different types of batteries.
Installation
■Environment
- Water and Moisture—Do not use this unit near water—for example, near a bathtub, washbowl, swimming pool, or the like. Damp basements should also be avoided.
- Condensation—Moisture may form on the lens in the following conditions...
- immediately after a heater has been turned on.
- in a steamy or very humid room.
- when the unit is suddenly moved from a cold environment to a warm one. If moisture forms inside this unit, it may not operate properly. To correct this problem wait about one hour for the moisture to evaporate.
- Heat—Never use or place this unit near a heat source. Do not leave it in an automobile exposed to direct sunlight for a long time with the doors and windows closed as this may deform the cabinet.
Placement
- Foreign Material—Care should be taken so that objects do not fall into and liquids are not spilled into the unit. Do not subject this unit to excessive smoke, dust, mechanical vibration, or shock.
- Magnetism—The unit should be situated away from equipment or devices that generate strong magnetic fields.
- Stacking—Do not place any objects, on top of the unit.
- Wall or Ceiling Mounting—The unit should not be mounted to a wall or ceiling, unless specified in this operating instructions.
Maintenance
(See page 5 for details.)
Clean the cabinet, panel and controls with a soft cloth lightly moistened with mild detergent solution.
Do not use any type of abrasive pad, scouring powder or solvent such as alcohol or benzine.
Service
- Damage Requiring Service—The unit should be serviced by qualified service personnel when:
(a) The AC adaptor is damaged; or (b) Objects have fallen or liquid has been spilled into the unit; or (c) The unit has been exposed to rain; or (d) The unit does not appear to operate normally or exhibits a marked change in performance; or (e) The unit has been dropped, or the enclosure damaged.

4 When recharging is complete, unplug the AC adaptor from the household AC outlet and the DC IN jack.
Note
- Rechargeable batteries have a service life of approximately 300 charge-discharge cycles. If the operating time on one full charge becomes noticeably shorter than it used to be, the battery has reached the end of its service life and should be replaced.
- Recharging should only be performed when the unit is powered off. (It is not possible to recharge the batteries while playing a CD.)
- The AC adaptor and rechargeable batteries may become warm while recharging is in progress. This is not a malfunction.
- Turn the unit off before replacing the rechargeable batteries.

After disconnecting the AC adaptor, insert two "AA" (LR6) alkaline batteries.
The procedure for inserting and removing dry-cell batteries is identical to that for rechargeable batteries.
Battery indicator

This indicator flashes when the batteries are almost out of power. Power is cut off completely a short while later. Rechargeable batteries: Recharge batteries.
Dry-cell batteries: Replace batteries with new ones.
Note
- The length of time the unit will continue to operate between when the battery indicator starts flashing and when the power is cut off differs depending on the type of batteries used.
- The battery indicator may not flash if rechargeable batteries, other than those designated by Panasonic, are used.
If the unit malfunctions or freezes during use, then disconnect the power sources (the AC adaptor or batteries).
Re-connect the power source and continue operation.
Side panel of the unit
Be sure to cover the headphone jack, OUT jack and DC IN jack with the rubber caps when they are not in use.
HOLD Function

This function causes the unit to ignore short, accidental button presses. (The disc lid can still be opened and closed.)

Anti-Skip System
- The thinner and lighter construction makes the unit less susceptible to vibration.
- An anti-skip mechanism prevents skipping caused when play speed changes due to swinging of the unit.
- A recovery system immediately returns the laser pick-up to its original position if it is knocked off the track by a strong shock.
- The 40-second anti-skip memory fills in interruptions caused by bumps and vibrations.
Press during play or stop mode.
The following indicator appears on the display panel.

The jogger indicator starts flashing.
Note
Wait until the jogger indicator appears before starting to jog.
When bumps continue repeatedly
The message "SORRY" appears on the display and sound is interrupted.

The jogger indicator can also flash or go out under the following conditions:
- As the end of the last track approaches.
- As the end of a track approaches during random play, program play, and 1-track repeat play.
- If the track in play or the next track is extremely short.
To cancel the anti-skip function
Press [A.SKIP] again.
Note
- The anti-skip setting can be changed during play, but this may cause a slight interruption in the sound because the disc's rotational speed changes.
- During anti-skip operation, the disc rotates at a higher rate than usual in collecting extra audio data. This could result in a slight increase in disc rotation noise.
Listening to sound with the unit connected to an audio system
The anti-skip function uses digital signal compression technology. It is recommended that the anti-skip function be canceled if the unit is connected to a home audio system.
Using Stereo Headphones with Remote Control SL-SW895 ONLY
The remote control can be operated regardless of the HOLD mode of the unit.
Preparation: Release the remote control from the HOLD mode.

Cautions
Water Resistant (Splash Proof)
This unit is splash-proof and is not designed to be used under water.
Please note the following points to avoid possible damage to the unit and the included headphones.
- Do not immerse in water.
- Do not splash water onto the unit.
- Water in the headphones jack, OUT jack, and DC IN jack may damage the unit. Cover them with the attached rubber caps when they are not in use.
- To prevent water from entering the unit, the dual locks should be locked to close the disc lid.
- If the unit or the headphones get wet with water or sweat, dry them with a soft cloth.
- Do not open the disc lid near water or sand. Before opening or closing the disc lid, be sure to wipe off water, dust or sand on the unit and operate with a dry hand.
- Make sure there is no sand or dust around the disc lid. The disc lid will not seal properly if there is, and water may get into the unit, possibly causing a malfunction.
- Do not expose the unit or the headphones to salt water. If the unit and headphones are immersed in salt water, wash them with a little fresh water then dry with soft cloth. Never wash them under running water.
- Do not place the unit and the headphones for a long period of time in high temperature and high humidity areas such as bathrooms or damp basements, etc.
- The dual locks may freeze in low temperatures. Allow the unit to return to the operational temperature range (0 °C–40 °C, 32 °F–104 °F) before opening the dual locks.
Selection and care of rechargeable / dry cell batteries
■ Selection
As a safety precaution, the portable CD players made by Panasonic are constructed so it is impossible to recharge ordinary batteries.
Only batteries especially designed for this unit can be recharged.
Special rechargeable Ni-Cd batteries:
P-3GAVA/2B (set of 2)
For details, check with your dealer.
Special rechargeable batteries
Ordinary dry cell batteries/rechargeable batteries

- If rechargeable battery play time is short after recharging, the batteries have reached the end of their service life. Replace them with the recommended replacements.
- Play time may be shorter than usual after recharging batteries for the first time or after they have been unused for a long time. Repeatedly recharge and discharge the batteries if this occurs to restore them to normal.
Care
To prevent battery damage, electrolyte leakage and short-circuiting, heed the following points.
- Do not peel off the covering on batteries and do not use if the covering has been peeled off.
- Align the poles ⊕ and ⊖ correctly when inserting the batteries.
- Do not mix different types or makes of batteries or old and new batteries.
- Remove the batteries if you do not intend to use the unit for a long time.
- Do not throw into fire, short-circuit, disassemble, or subject to excessive heat.
- Do not attempt to recharge dry cell batteries.
- Do not allow metal objects to touch the battery terminals as this may cause short-circuiting which is dangerous.
- When carrying batteries in a pocket or bag, ensure no metal objects such as necklaces are placed together with them. Contact with metal may cause short-circuiting which can cause a fire. For safety, carry the rechargeable batteries in the battery carrying case.
When driving a car
In the interest of traffic safety, do not operate the unit while driving.
Stereo headphones with remote control SL-SW895 ONLY
- Do not wear the headphones with the VMSS unit to the front.
- Do not allow children or people who are unwell or not in full control of their faculties to wear these headphones.
- If you feel nauseous while using the headphones, discontinue use immediately.
Listening caution

Do not play your headphones or earphones at a high volume. Hearing experts advise against continuous extended play.
If you experience a ringing in your ears, reduce volume or discontinue use.
Do not use while operating a motorized vehicle. It may create a traffic hazard and is illegal in many areas.
You should use extreme caution or temporarily discontinue use in potentially hazardous situations.
Even if your headphones or earphones are the open-air type designed to let you hear outside sounds, don't turn up the volume so high that you can't hear what's around you.
Sound can be deceiving. Over time your hearing "comfort level" adapts to higher volumes of sound. So what sounds "normal" can actually be loud and harmful to your hearing.
Guard against this by setting your equipment at a safe level BEFORE your hearing adapts.
To establish a safe level:
- Start your volume control at a low setting.
- Slowly increase the sound until you can hear it comfortably and clearly, and without distortion.
Once you have established a comfortable sound level:
- Set the dial and leave it there.
Discontinue use if you experience discomfort with the headphones/earphones. Continued use may cause rashes or other allergic reactions.
