Frequently Asked Questions - UNI3510U2 StarTech.com

What types of hard drives are compatible with the StarTech.com UNI3510U2 enclosure?
The enclosure supports both IDE (66/100/133) and SATA I/II (SATA 150/300) 3.5-inch hard drives.
Does the UNI3510U2 require any driver installation?
No driver installation is required for USB 2.0 hosts. However, older USB 1.1 systems may need updated USB bus drivers.
How do I install a hard drive into the enclosure?
Remove the base stand and slide out the drive tray. Connect the appropriate power and data cables (IDE or SATA) to the drive, then secure it with screws. Slide the tray back in and reattach the base.
What is the maximum data transfer speed?
Up to 480 Mbps when using USB 2.0 and a SATA II drive. Actual speed may be lower due to system limitations.
How do I safely disconnect the enclosure from my computer?
On Windows, use the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon in the system tray. On Mac, drag the drive icon to the Trash. Then turn off the power switch and unplug the USB cable.
What should I do if I get a 'delayed write failure' error on Windows XP?
This is often caused by the Windows firewall blocking communication. Temporarily disable the firewall and test the connection. If successful, configure the firewall to allow the USB connection.
Can I use this enclosure with a USB 1.1 port?
Yes, but performance will be limited to USB 1.1 speeds (12 Mbps). For best performance, use a USB 2.0 port.
What operating systems are supported?
Windows 98SE, ME, 2000, 2003 Server, XP, Vista; Mac OS 9.0 and higher; Linux.
Is the enclosure compatible with both IDE and SATA drives simultaneously?
No, only one drive can be installed at a time. You must connect either the IDE or SATA cables, not both.
What is the warranty period for the UNI3510U2?
The product is backed by a one-year limited warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship.

Troubleshooting

Slow Data Transfer Rates between the External Drive and Host Computer:

Your computer may be operating at USB 1.1 speeds, if the correct drivers have not been installed for the USB Bus Controller. Please ensure that the latest drivers for your motherboard, or USB add-on card have been installed. If the host computer is unable to support USB 2.0, you may consider adding a PCI or PCI Express based add-on card to your computer. For more information regarding add-on cards, please see the section entitled Accessory Products from StarTech.com.

Windows won't allow me to safely remove my drive?

Often times, this is because the operating system is still reporting the drive as busy or in use. Be sure to close all applications before removing the drive connection from the host computer.

Delayed write failure on Windows XP

One of the most common causes of delayed write failures is that some of the required communication between the enclosure and the host is being blocked by a firewall.

Windows XP SP2 has a built-in firewall, that helps to secure the computer against outside intrusion. The firewall is enabled by default when Service Pack 2 is installed, which may block transfers to and from the drive enclosure. If this is the case, temporarily disable the firewall, and attempt a file transfer between the computer and the external drive. If the transfer is successful, configure the Windows Firewall to allow the USB connection. Be sure to enable the firewall, once troubleshooting is complete.
