Main features

Using marantz original HDAM®SA2

The unit uses an HDAM®SA2, whose quality has been proved in Super Audio CD players and high-end amplifiers, as a high-speed buffer amplifier. You can enjoy the high speed and high-quality sound like that produced by high-end equipment.

Incorporates a Cirrus Logic advanced D/A converter, CS4398

A D/A converter is an essential element for the audio quality of a CD player. The CS4398 Cirrus Logic D/A Converter, which has a reputation for high precision and has been adopted for other marantz Super Audio CD players, is adopted for this unit.

Audio EX function (page 12)

When digital output or the display are set to OFF, you can enjoy high quality analog output sound.

High grade headphone circuit

The high-grade headphone circuit incorporates a high-speed buffer amplifier to enable headphone listening of high quality sound reproduction, late at night or in other such situations.

Supports MP3, WMA and AAC fi le playback (page 15)

MP3, WMA and AAC files that have been recorded onto CD-R or CD-RW discs can be played back on this CD player.

Playback of USB audio (MP3/WMA/AAC/WAV)/iPod

This unit can play back MP3, WMA, WAV and AAC fi les by connecting an USB device or iPod to its USB connector.

Quick replay function (Audio CDs only) (page 12)

Simply press the Q.REPLAY button on the remote control during playback, and the track rewinds the set amount of time (setting range: 5-60 seconds), and resumes playing from the rewind point.

Supports CD-TEXT display

CD-Text is an extension to the existing audio CD standard that enables text information, such as the name of the artist, album title and song titles to be stored on an audio CD. CDs with the following logos support this function.

CD TEX

Text information is recorded on the parts that are not used in the conventional Audio CDs. This CD player enables the text information stored on a CD-Text CD to be read (applies only to English alphanumeric text).

Cautions on handling

• Before turning the power switch on
Check once again that all connections are correct and that there are no problems with the connection cables.
- When leaving home for long periods of time, be sure to unplug the power cord from the power outlet.

- Proper ventilation If the unit is left in a room full of the smoke from cigarettes, etc., for long periods of time, the surface of the optical pickup may get dirty, preventing it from receiving the signals properly.

- About condensation

If there is a major difference in temperature between the inside of the unit and its surroundings, condensation may form on parts inside the unit, causing the unit to fail to operate properly. If this happens, let the unit sit for an hour or two with the power off and wait until there is little difference in temperature before using the unit.

• Cautions on using mobile phones

Using a mobile phone near this unit may result in noise. If that occurs, move the mobile phone away from the unit when it is in use.

- Moving the unit

Turn off the power and unplug the power cord from the power outlet. Next, disconnect the cables connected to other system units before moving the unit.

① Music CDs

Discs marked with the logo at right can be played in this unit.

② CD-R/CD-RW

NOTE

• Discs in special shapes (heart-shaped discs, octagonal discs, etc.) cannot be played. Do not attempt to play them, as doing so can damage the unit.
- Some discs and some recording formats cannot be played.
• Non-finalized discs cannot be played.

\* What is finalization?

Finalization is the process that makes recorded CD-R/CD-RW discs playable on compatible players.

Holding discs

Do not touch the signal surface.

Loading discs

• Make sure the label side (printed side) is facing upwards.
• Make sure the disc tray is fully open when inserting the disc.
• Place the discs flat, 12 cm discs in the outer tray guide (Figure 1), 8 cm discs in the inner tray guide (Figure 2).

• Place 8 cm discs in the inner tray guide without using an adapter.

• If a DVD or other disc that is not supported by this unit is placed on the disc tray, "SubQ Error" is shown on the display. When the ▲ button is pressed after that, the disc tray opens after 60 seconds.
• If you place a disc that contains other than MP3 or WMA files, "No File" is displayed.

NOTE

• Do not push the disc tray in by hand when the power is turned off. Doing so could damage the set.
• Do not place any objects other than discs on the disc tray. Doing so may damage the unit.

Cautions on loading discs

• Only load one disc at a time. Loading two or more discs can damage the unit or scratch the discs.
• Do not use cracked or warped discs or discs that have been repaired with adhesive, etc.
• Do not use discs on which the sticky part of cellophane tape or labels is exposed or on which there are traces of where labels have been removed. Such discs can get caught inside the player and damage it.

Cautions on handling

• Do not get fingerprints, oil or dirt on discs.
  • Take special care not to scratch discs when removing them from their cases.
• Do not bend or heat discs.
• Do not enlarge the hole in the center.
• Do not write on the labeled (printed) surface with ball-point pens, pencils, etc., or stick new labels on discs.
• Water droplets may form on discs if they are moved suddenly from a cold place (outdoors for example) to a warm place, but do not try to dry them off using a hair-dryer, etc.

Cautions on storing discs

• Be sure to remove discs after using them.
• Be sure to store discs in their cases to protect them from dust, scratches, warping, etc.
• Do not store discs in the following places:
• Places exposed to direct sunlight for long periods of time
• Dusty or humid places
• Places exposed to heat from heaters, etc.

Cleaning discs

• If there are fingerprints or dirt on a disc, wipe them off before using the disc. Fingerprints and dirt can impair sound quality and cause interruptions in playback.
• Use a commercially available disc cleaning set or a soft cloth to clean discs.

Gently wipe the disc from the inside towards the outside.

Do not wipe in a circular motion.

NOTE

Do not use record spray, antistatic agents, benzene, thinner or other solvents.

About the remote control

Inserting the batteries

① Remove the rear cover of the remote control.

② Set two R03/AAA batteries in the battery compartment in the indicated direction.

③ Put the rear cover back on.

NOTE

• Replace the batteries with new ones if the unit does not operate even when the remote control is operated close to the unit.
  • The supplied batteries are only for verifying operation.
• Insert the batteries in the proper direction, following the and marks in the battery compartment.
  • To prevent damage or leakage of battery fluid:
• Do not use a new battery with an old one.
• Do not use two different types of batteries.
• Do not attempt to charge dry batteries.
• Do not short-circuit, disassemble, heat or dispose of batteries in a fire.
• Do not keep the battery in a place exposed to direct sunlight or in places with extremely high temperatures, such as near a heater.
• If the battery fluid leaks, carefully wipe the fluid off the inside of the battery compartment and insert new batteries.
• Remove the batteries from the remote control if it will not be used for a long time.
• Dispose of batteries in accordance with local regulations on battery disposal.
• The remote control unit may function improperly if rechargeable batteries are used.

Operating range of the remote control

Operate the remote control while pointing it at the remote sensor.

NOTE

The unit may function improperly or the remote control may not operate if the remote control sensor is exposed to direct sunlight or strong artificial light from a fluorescent or infrared light.

• Insert the plugs securely. Loose connections will result in the generation of noise.

• Do not bundle power cords together with connection cables. Doing so can result in humming or noise.
• Do not connect the unit to the PHONO input connectors on the amplifier.

Before use

Set the power to standby

Press or [POWER].

Power is set to standby and the power indicator lights.

Before setting power to standby, make sure the disc tray is completely closed.

NOTE

• Do not force the tray in by hand while power is set to standby. This could cause a trouble.
• Even when power is set to standby, electrical current passes through some circuits. If you do not intend to use the unit for an extended period of time, unplug the power cord from the household power outlet.

Switching the input source

This unit supports the following playback functions in addition to disc playback.

• Playing files from USB memory from the front panel USB port.
• Playing iPod files from the front panel USB port.
  Before playing back files from a connected device, perform the following operation to switch the input source.

Press to select the input source.

The input source changes in the following order each time is pressed.

NOTE

- If </> or []_1 is pressed during random playback, each time the button is pressed the unit switches to a different track in random order and starts playback.

- To search through the current track during random play, press and continue holding <|◀◀/◀◀>, <▶▶/▶▶> or [◀◀, ▶▶].

- Random play is also cancelled when the power is switched to standby or off, or when the disc tray is opened.

Displaying CD-TEXT

You can view text information stored on a disc as CD-TEXT on this unit.

Mainly, information on the current track being played is displayed.

Press [TEXT] during playback.

The information changes in the following order each time [TEXT] is pressed.

• A maximum of 32 characters can be displayed.

NOTE

As the stored information differs depending on the disc, all of the information may not be displayed.

Canceling a track from program playback

While stopped, press [CANCEL].

When [CANCEL] is pressed, tracks are deleted in order from the last programmed track.

Cancelling all programmed tracks

During program playback, press ■ twice.

During stop mode, press ■ once.

- Program playback mode can also be cancelled using the following operations.

- Switching the unit power to standby or off.

- Pressing ▲ to open the disc tray.

- You can specify up to 30 tracks each for program playback.

- Repeat playback, random playback, and AMS playback can be used when "PROG" is lit in the display.

NOTE

Programmed playback is not possible with MP3, WMA and AAC files.

Playback CDs

Skipping tracks you don't want to hear (Delete program playback)

1 During stop mode, press [PROGRAM] and [CANCEL] together. The "PROG" indicator flashes in the display, and the mode switches to the delete program playback mode.

2 Press [NUMBER] (0 - 9), and select the track number that you want to skip. [Example] If you want to skip the 3rd and 12th tracks, press [3]. and then press [1] and [2].

- The entered numbers are set approximately 1.5 seconds after the number buttons are pressed. When pressing a 2-digit number, press the second digit immediately after the first.

3 Press▶ Playback starts, and the selected tracks are skipped.

Checking details of the delete program

Press [SCROLL/RECALL] during delete programming or delete program playback. Each time [SCROLL/RECALL] is pressed, the skipped tracks are shown in order in the display.

Cancelling delete program playback

During delete program playback, press ■ twice. While stopped, press ■ once. • All of the delete program tracks are erased when ▲ is pressed to open the disc tray.

A maximum of 30 tracks can be programmed for delete program playback.

Searching for a specific track (AMS playback)

You can play back all track intros, from the first track onward, in sequence. This function is useful when you search for a specific track you want to listen to. (AMS playback: Auto Music Scan playback)

1 During playback or stop mode, press [AMS]. The ▶ indicator flashes in the display, and approximately 10-second AMS playback starts.

- When approximately 10 second AMS playback is selected, playback automatically switches to the next track.

2 When you find the track you want to listen to, press ▶. The ▶ indicator lights and normal playback is resumed.

AMS playback can be used during program playback and random playback.

Rewinding tracks slightly to listen again (Quick replay)

Simply press [Q.REPLAY] during playback to rewind the track the amount of time set in the menu and playback again (Default setting: 10 sec).

NOTE

Quick replay cannot by used between different tracks. Also, if the overall time of the track being played back is shorter than the quick play setting time, or if the playback time is shorter than the quick play setting time, when [Q.REPLAY] is pressed the track is played back from the start.

Setting the quick play time

For details on the settings, see "Q Replay (Quick replay)" ( page 22).

Turning digital output off

When the digital audio output terminals are not used, you can enjoy higher quality music by turning digital output off. For details on the settings, see "CD D-OUT (CD digital output settings)" (C) page 20.

Switching Audio EX

This function turns the unit display and digital output off to playback higher sound quality from the audio signal.

During stop mode, press [SOUND MODE].

The Audio EX mode changes in the following order each time [SOUND MODE] is pressed.

Use the monaural mini-plug cable for connecting FLASHER IN jacks. Do not use the stereo mini-plug cable.

Remote control connection

When you use this unit connected to a marantz amplifier, this unit receives operation signals sent from the amplifier and operates accordingly.

Connection

Use the supplied remote connection cable to connect the REMOTE CONTROL IN terminal of this unit to REMOTE CONTROL OUT terminal of the amplifier.

Setting

Turn the EXTERNAL/INTERNAL switch on the unit to "EXTERNAL".

• This setting will disable remote sensor reception of this unit.

- To operate the unit, point the remote control at the remote sensor of the amplifier.

MP3, WMA or AAC playback order of MP3, WMA or AAC files

When there are multiple folders containing MP3, WMA or AAC files, the playback order of folders is automatically set when this unit reads the media. The files in each folder are played back in the order in which the files were recorded on the media, from the oldest date and time.

□ Playback order of folders

CD-R/CD-RW

For files recorded onto a CD-R or CD-RW disc, the files stored in the first-tier folders are played back first, followed by the files in all second-tier folders, then all files in the third-tier folders and so forth.

USB memory device

For files stored on a USB memory device, files stored in the first-tier folder are played first, followed by the files stored in the second-tier folder within the first-tier folder, followed by the files stored in the third-tier folder within the first-tier folder and so on. When all files within the first-tier folder have been played, the files in the second first-tier folder are played.

- The playback order displayed on a PC may differ from the actual playback order.

- The playback order with a CD-R/CD-RW may differ, depending on the writing software.

NOTE

The playback order may differ from the order in which the folders or files were recorded if you delete or add a folder or file on USB memory device. This occurs because of data recording specifications and is not a malfunction.

Removing the USB memory device

1 Press ■ or □ to stop playback.

2 Check that the communication indicator on the USB memory device is not flashing, then pull out the USB memory device.

NOTE

Do not remove the USB memory device from the unit when the USB memory communication indicator is flashing. Doing so may damage the USB memory device, or may corrupt the files recorded on the USB memory device.

• Resume playback only works when an identical USB memory device is inserted. If another USB memory device is inserted, the unit will start playing from the first file.
• The unit may not play your desired file if files have been added to or deleted from the identical USB memory device.
• Playback will be resumed from the beginning of the current file.

If the stopped state continues for more than 30 minutes, this unit automatically switches to standby mode.

Explanation of terms

B

Bit rate

This expresses the read amount per 1 second of video/audio data recorded in a disc. A larger number means higher sound quality, but also means a larger file size.

M

MP3 (MPEG AudioPlayer 3)

This is an internationally standardized audio data compression scheme, using the "MPEG-1" video compression standard. It compresses the data volume to about one eleventh its original size while maintaining sound quality equivalent to a music CD.

S

Sampling frequency

Sampling involves taking a reading of a sound wave (analog signal) at regular intervals and expressing the height of the wave at each reading in digitized format (producing a digital signal).

The number of readings taken in one second is called the "sampling frequency". The larger the value, the closer the reproduced sound is to the original.

W

WMA (Windows Media Audio)

This is audio compression technology developed by Microsoft Corporation.

WMA data can be encoded using Windows Media ^® Player Ver.7, 7.1, Windows Media ^® Player for Windows ^® XP and Windows Media ^® Player 9 Series.

To encode WMA files, only use applications authorized by Microsoft Corporation. If you use an unauthorized application, the file may not work properly.

Troubleshooting

If a problem should arise, first check the following:

1. Are the connections correct?

2. Is the set being operated as described in the owner's manual?

3. Are the other devices operating properly?

If this unit does not operate properly, check the items listed in the table below. Should the problem persist, there may be a malfunction.

In this case, disconnect the power immediately and contact your store of purchase.

[Disc]
