Frequently Asked Questions - BP A3 PC MICROLIFE

How to set the date and time on the BP A3 PC blood pressure monitor?
After inserting batteries, the year digits flash. Use the M (memory) button to set the year, then press the time setting button to confirm and move to month. Repeat for day, hour, and minutes. To change later, hold the time setting button for 3 seconds.
What is the difference between standard mode and MAM mode?
Standard mode performs a single measurement. MAM mode (recommended) automatically takes 3 successive measurements with a 15-second interval and displays the average, providing a more reliable result. Select the mode using the MAM selector on the side of the device.
What does the arrhythmia indicator (irregular heart symbol) mean?
This symbol appears if an irregular pulse is detected during measurement. Repeat the measurement. If it appears regularly, consult your doctor. The device does not replace a cardiac exam but helps in early detection.
How to clean the blood pressure monitor cuff?
Clean the cuff with a damp cloth and soapy water. Do not machine wash or wash in dishwasher. The device itself cleans with a dry, soft cloth.
What to do if the screen displays 'ERR 3'?
Error 'ERR 3' indicates the cuff is not inflating properly. Check the connector connection, cuff position (not too loose), and battery condition. Replace batteries if necessary and repeat the measurement.
How to transfer data to a computer?
Connect the monitor to a PC via a mini-USB cable (not included). Install the Microlife Blood Pressure Analyser (BPA) software (downloadable at www.microlife.fr). The device connects automatically; flashing bars confirm the connection.
What cuff size should I use?
Measure the circumference of your arm mid-upper arm. Use the table: S (17-22 cm), M (22-32 cm), M-L (22-42 cm), L (32-42 cm), L-XL (32-52 cm). An incorrect cuff size distorts measurements.
How to delete all measurements in memory?
Turn off the device, select the user with the switch. Hold the M button until 'CL' flashes. Press M again to confirm deletion. To cancel, press ON/OFF.
Can I use rechargeable batteries?
Yes, use only NiMH batteries. Remove them and recharge as soon as the low battery symbol appears. Do not recharge them in the device. If you do not use the device for more than a week, remove the batteries.
What to do if the monitor displays 'HI' or 'LO'?
'HI' means pressure too high (>300 mmHg) or pulse too high (>200 bpm). 'LO' indicates pulse too low (<40 bpm). Rest for 5 minutes and repeat measurement. If error persists, consult your doctor.

  19. Important Facts about Blood Pressure and Self-Measurement

  20. Blood pressure is the pressure of the blood flowing in the arteries generated by the pumping of the heart. Two values, the systolic (upper) value and the diastolic (lower) value, are always measured.

  21. The device indicates the pulse rate (the number of times the heart beats in a minute).
•Permanently high blood pressure values can damage your health and must be treated by your doctor!

- Always discuss your values with your doctor and tell him/her if you have noticed anything unusual or feel unsure. Never rely on single blood pressure readings.

- There are several causes of excessively high blood pressure values. Your doctor will explain them in more detail and offer treatment where appropriate. Besides medication, weight loss and exercise can also lower your blood pressure.

- Under no circumstances should you alter the dosages of any drugs prescribed by your doctor!

- Depending on physical exertion and condition, blood pressure is subject to wide fluctuations as the day progresses. You should therefore take your measurements in the same quiet conditions and when you feel relaxed! Take at least two readings every time (in the morning and in the evening) and average the measurements.

- It is quite normal for two measurements taken in quick succession to produce significantly different results. Therefore we recommend using the MAM technology.

- Deviations between measurements taken by your doctor or in the pharmacy and those taken at home are quite normal, as these situations are completely different.

- Several measurements provide much more reliable information about your blood pressure than just one single measurement. Therefore we recommend using the MAM technology.

- Leave a small break of at least 15 seconds between two measurements.

- If you suffer from an irregular heartbeat, measurements taken with this device should be evaluated with your doctor.

- The pulse display is not suitable for checking the frequency of heart pacemakers!

- If you are pregnant, you should monitor your blood pressure very closely as it can change drastically during this time!

MICROLIFE BP A3 PC - Table of Contents - 1

This monitor is specially tested for use in pregnancy and pre-eclampsia. When you detect unusual high readings in pregnancy, you should measure again after 4 hours. If the reading is still too high, consult your doctor or gynecologist.

How do I evaluate my blood pressure?

Table for classifying home blood pressure values in adults in accordance with the international Guidelines (ESH, AHA, JSH). Data in mmHg.

Range Systolic Diastolic Recommendation
blood pressure too low 100 60Consult your doctor
1.blood pressure optimum100 - 13060 - 80 Self-check
2.blood pressure elevated130 - 13580 - 85 Self-check
3.blood pressure too high135 - 16085 - 100 Seek medical advice
4.blood pressure dangerously high160 100 Urgently seek medical advice!

The higher value is the one that determines the evaluation. Example: a blood pressure value of 140/80 mmHg or a value of 130/90 mmHg indicates «blood pressure too high».

2. Using the Device for the First Time

Inserting the batteries

After you have unpacked your device, first insert the batteries. The battery compartment ④ is on the bottom of the device. Insert the batteries (4 x 1.5 V, size AA), thereby observing the indicated polarity.

Setting the date and time

  1. After the new batteries are fitted, the year number flashes in the display. You can set the year by pressing the M-button ⑪. To confirm and then set the month, press the time button ⑫.
  2. Press the M-button to set the month. Press the time button to confirm and then set the day.
  3. Follow the instructions above to set the day, hour and minutes.
  4. Once you have set the minutes and pressed the time button, the date and time are set and the time is displayed.
  5. If you want to change the date and time, press and hold the time button down for approx. 3 seconds until the year number starts to flash. Now you can enter the new values as described above.

Selecting the correct cuff

Microlife offers different cuff sizes. Select the cuff size to match the circumference of your upper arms (measured by close fitting in the centre of the upper arm).

Cuff size for circumference of upper arm
S17 - 22 cm
M22 - 32 cm
M - L22 - 42 cm
L32 - 42 cm
L - XL32 - 52 cm

Optional preformed cuffs «Easy» are available for better fitting and comfort.

Only use Microlife cuffs.

  • Contact your local Microlife Service if the enclosed cuff ⑥ does not fit.
Connect the cuff to the device by inserting the cuff connector ⑦ into the cuff socket ③ as far as it will go.

Selecting the user

This device allows to store the results for 2 individual users.

Before each measurement, set the user switch ⑩ for the intended user: user 1 or user 2.
▶ User 1: slide the user switch ⑩ upwards to the user 1 icon.
▶ User 2: slide the user switch ⑩ downwards to the user 2 icon.
The first person to measure should select user 1.

Select the measuring mode: standard or MAM mode

This device enables you to select either standard (standard single measurement) or MAM mode (automatic triple measurement). To select standard mode, slide the MAM switch ⑨ on the side of the device downwards to position «1» and to select MAM mode, slide this switch upwards to position «3».

  • In MAM mode, 3 measurements are automatically taken in succession and the result is then automatically analysed and displayed. Because the blood pressure constantly fluctuates, a result determined in this way is more reliable than one produced by a single measurement.
  • When you select the 3 measurements, the MAM-symbol 23 appears in the display.
  • The bottom, right hand section of the display shows a 1, 2 or 3 to indicate which of the 3 measurements is currently being taken.

  • There is a break of 15 seconds between the measurements (15 seconds are adequate according to «Blood Pressure Monitoring, 2001, 6:145-147» for oscillometric instruments). A count down indicates the remaining time.

  • The individual results are not displayed. Your blood pressure will only be displayed after all 3 measurements are taken.
  • Do not remove the cuff between measurements.
  • If one of the individual measurements was questionable, a fourth one is automatically taken.

3. Taking a Blood Pressure Measurement using this Device

Checklist for taking a reliable measurement

  1. Avoid activity, eating or smoking immediately before the measurement.
  2. Sit down for at least 5 minutes before the measurement and relax.
  3. Always measure on the same arm (normally left). It is recommended that doctors perform double arm measurements on a patients first visit in order to determine which arm to measure in the future. The arm with the higher blood pressure should be measured.
  4. Remove close-fitting garments from the upper arm. To avoid constriction, shirt sleeves should not be rolled up - they do not interfere with the cuff if they are laid flat.
  5. Always ensure that the correct cuff size is used (marking on the cuff).

  6. Fit the cuff closely, but not too tight.

  7. Make sure that the cuff is positioned 2 cm above the elbow.
  8. The artery mark located on the cuff (ca. 3 cm long bar) must lie over the artery which runs down the inner side of the arm.
  9. Support your arm so it is relaxed.
  10. Ensure that the cuff is at the same height as your heart.

  11. Press the ON/OFF button ① to start the measurement.

  12. The cuff will now pump up automatically. Relax, do not move and do not tense your arm muscles until the measurement result is displayed. Breathe normally and do not talk.

  13. When the correct pressure is reached, the pumping stops and the pressure falls gradually. If the required pressure was not reached, the device will automatically pump some more air into the cuff.

  14. During the measurement, the pulse indicator ②1 flashes in the display.

  15. The result, comprising the systolic 16 and the diastolic 17 blood pressure and the pulse rate 18 is displayed. Note also the explanations on further display symbols in this booklet.

  16. When the device has finished measuring, remove the cuff.

  17. Switch off the device. (The monitor does switch off automatically after approx. 1 min.).

How not to store a reading

As soon as the reading is displayed press and hold the ON/OFF button ① until «M» ② is flashing. Confirm to delete the reading by pressing the M-button ⑪.

You can stop the measurement at any time by pressing the ON/OFF button (e.g. if you feel uneasy or an unpleasant pressure sensation).

If the systolic blood pressure is known to be very high, it can be an advantage to set the pressure individually. Press the ON/OFF button after the monitor has been pumped up to a level of approx. 30 mmHg (shown on the display). Keep the button pressed until the pressure is about 40 mmHg above the expected systolic value – then release the button.

4. Appearance of the Pulse Arrhythmia Indicator for early Detection

This symbol ②4 indicates that certain pulse irregularities were detected during the measurement. In this case, the result may deviate from your normal blood pressure – repeat the measurement. In most cases, this is no cause for concern. However, if the symbol appears on a regular basis (e.g. several times a week with measurements taken daily) we advise you to tell your doctor.

Please show your doctor the following explanation:

Information for the doctor on frequent appearance of the Arrhythmia indicator

This device is an oscillometric blood pressure monitor that also analyses pulse irregularity during measurement. The device is clinically tested.

The arrhythmia symbol is displayed after the measurement, if pulse irregularities occur during measurement. If the symbol appears more frequently (e.g. several times per week on measurements performed daily) we recommend the patient to seek medical advice.

This device does not replace a cardiac examination, but serves to detect pulse irregularities at an early stage.

5. Traffic Light Indicator in the Display

The bars on the left-hand edge of the display ⑲ show you the range within which the indicated blood pressure value lies. Depending on the height of the bar, the readout value is either within the optimum (green), elevated (yellow), too high (orange) or dangerously high (red) range. The classification corresponds to the 4 ranges in the table as defined by the international guidelines (ESH, AHA, JSH), as described in «Section 1.».

This device can be used in conjunction with a personal computer (PC) running the Microlife Blood Pressure Analyser (BPA) software. The memory data can be transferred to the PC by connecting the monitor via a cable. If no CD and cable is included download the BPA software from www.microlife.com and use a USB cable with a Mini-B 5 pin connector.

Installation and data transmission

  1. Insert CD into the CD ROM drive of your PC. The installation will start automatically. If not, please click on «SETUP.EXE».
  2. Connect the monitor via the cable to the PC; there is no need to switch the device on. 3 horizontal bars will appear on the display and last for 3 seconds.
  3. The bars will then flash to indicate that the connection between PC and device is successful. As long as the cable is plugged in, the bars will keep flashing and the buttons are disabled.

During the connection, the device is completely controlled by the computer. Please refer to the «help» file for software instructions.

7. Data Memory

This device automatically stores up to 99 measurement values for each of the 2 users.

Viewing the stored values

Select either user 1 or 2 with the user switch ⑩.

Press the M-button ⑪ briefly, when the device is switched off. The display first shows «M» ② and an average value. The device then switches to the last stored value.

Pressing the M-button again displays the previous value. Pressing the M-button repeatedly enables you to move from one stored value to another.

Memory full

Pay attention that the maximum memory capacity of 99 memories per user is not exceeded. When the 99 memory is full, the oldest value is automatically overwritten with the 100th value. Values should be evaluated by a doctor before the memory capacity is reached – otherwise data will be lost.

Clearing all values

Make sure the correct user is activated.

  1. Select either user 1 or 2 with the user switch ⑩, when the device is switched off.
  2. Hold down the M-button ⑪ until «CL» appears and then release the button.
  3. Press the M-button while «CL» is flashing to permanently clear all values of the selected user.

Cancel deletion: press ON/OFF button ① while «CL» is flashing.

Individual values cannot be cleared.

8. Battery Indicator and Battery change

Low battery

When the batteries are approximately 3/4 empty the battery symbol will flash as soon as the device is switched on (partly filled battery displayed). Although the device will continue to measure reliably, you should obtain replacement batteries.

Flat battery – replacement

When the batteries are flat, the battery symbol ⑭ will flash as soon as the device is switched on (flat battery displayed). You cannot take any further measurements and must replace the batteries.

  1. Open the battery compartment ④ on the bottom of the device.
  2. Replace the batteries – ensure correct polarity as shown by the symbols in the compartment.
  3. To set date and time, follow the procedure described in «Section 2.».

The memory retains all values although date and time must be reset – the year number therefore flashes automatically after the batteries are replaced.
