How do I perform an auto scan for DAB stations?

Press the Scan button or go to Menu > Auto Scan. The radio will search for available DAB stations and store them automatically.

Can I set two different alarms?

Yes, the S2DABW11E has dual alarm settings. You can set each alarm to wake you with radio or buzzer, and choose different times for weekdays and weekends.

Why is my FM reception poor?

Extend the telescopic antenna fully for better FM reception. If indoors, try moving the radio near a window or away from large metal objects.

How do I switch between DAB and FM modes?

Press the Mode button repeatedly to toggle between DAB and FM. The current band will be displayed on the screen.

What type of batteries does the radio use?

It uses 4 x AA batteries (not included). Note that when using batteries, some features like backlight may be limited to save power.

How do I store a station as a preset?

While listening to a station, press and hold one of the Preset buttons (1-10) until you hear a beep. You can store up to 10 DAB and 10 FM presets.

My radio won't turn on. What should I check?

Make sure the AC adapter is securely connected or that fresh batteries are installed. Check the power outlet with another device. If still not working, contact support.

Can I use headphones with this radio?

Yes, plug any standard headphones into the 3.5mm jack on the side. The built-in speaker will be muted automatically.

How do I set the sleep timer?

Press the Sleep button repeatedly to choose a duration (15, 30, 60, 90, 120 minutes or Off). The radio will turn off automatically after the set time.

We recommend that you spend some time reading this instruction manual in order that you fully understand all the operational features it offers. You will also find some hints and tips to help you resolve any issues.

Read all the safety instructions carefully before use and keep this instruction manual for future reference.

Remove all packaging from the unit. Retain the packaging. If you dispose of it please do so according to local regulations.

Connect the mains cable at the rear of the unit to the mains socket.

Connections

Using Earphones

Turn down the volume before connecting the earphones. Slowly raise the volume with the earphones on until you reach your desired volume. When earphones are connected, the speaker is automatically disabled.

Avoid listening to sound at excessive levels which could be harmful to your ears. Prolonged listening at full volume can damage the ears of the user.

Basic Operation

Powering ON/OFF

When you first connect the unit to the mains socket, the unit will be in STANDBY mode and the standby indicator will illuminate.

• Press the STANDBY ⏻ button to switch the unit on.
• Press the STANDBY ⏻ button to switch the unit back to standby mode.
• Disconnect the mains plug from the mains socket if you want to switch the unit off completely.

Selecting Modes

Press the DAB/FM button repeatedly to switch between modes (DAB or FM).

Adjusting the Volume

Adjust the volume to the desired level by turning the VOLUME +/- control.

Setting the Clock

The clock can only set and be updated if you can receive DAB signals in your location. In order for the clock to synchronise to the current local time you must leave it on one DAB station for a short period of time. Manual clock setting is not required.

Setting the Alarm

Make sure you have preset FM and DAB stations before setting the Alarm, if you want to wake up to DAB or FM radio.

1. Press and hold the ALARM/SNOOZE button to set the alarm. The display will show "Alarm Setting" and the hour digits will flash.
2. Press the buttons repeatedly to adjust the hour digits and then press the SELECT button to confirm.
3. The minute digits will flash. Press the buttons repeatedly to adjust the minute digits and then press the SELECT button to confirm.
4. Press the buttons repeatedly to select from one of the 1-4 DAB preset stations. Press the SELECT button to confirm.
5. Press the buttons repeatedly to select from one of the 1-4 FM preset stations. Press the SELECT button to confirm.
6. Press the buttons repeatedly to select either Buzzer tone 1 or 2. Press the SELECT button to confirm.
7. Press the buttons repeatedly to select the radio wake up volume level from 1-20. Press the SELECT button to confirm.

Activating the Alarm Function

1. To activate the alarm function, repeatedly press the ALARM/SNOOZE button. The alarm wake-up modes will be displayed and change in the below sequence on every press:

1. When the display shows your desired alarm wake-up mode, stop pressing the ALARM/SNOOZE button. The alarm function is now activated and an alarm icon will be displayed.
2. When the alarm time arrives, the selected wake-up mode will be on and the alarm icon in the display will flash to indicate that the alarm is triggered. To stop the alarm sooner, press the STANDBY button.
3. To check the alarm status, press the ALARM/SNOOZE button. The alarm status will show on the display.

• If you have activated the alarm function and the wake-up mode is DAB or FM, make sure that the volume is at a sufficient level for you to hear.
  • If the wake-up mode is DAB and the DAB signal strength is low, the buzzer alarm will be triggered.

Automatic Alarm Repeat

The alarm will automatically repeat each day at the selected time as long as the alarm icon is displayed. To cancel this function, repeatedly press the ALARM/SNOOZE button until "Alarm Off" shows on the display.

Snooze Function

When the alarm has triggered, press the ALARM/SNOOZE button to temporarily switch off the alarm for 5 minutes. The display will show "z" to indicate that snooze is on. Snooze function will continue for 1 hour from the set alarm time.

Sleep Function

This function allows you to program the unit to turn to standby mode by itself after a set period of time.

1. To activate the sleep function, press the SLEEP button repeatedly and the "Sleep Timer" shows on the display. The time will change in the below sequence on every press:

1. When your desired sleep time appears in the display, stop pressing the button and the sleep function will be activated in two seconds. '☐' will be displayed on the display.
2. When the sleep time counts to zero, the unit will turn to standby mode. To put the sleep function off while the sleep timer is still counting down, press the SLEEP button once, "will disappear from the display.
3. Press the INFO button repeatedly to show the sleep timer status on the display when it is turned on.

Display Backlight

There are four backlight levels for you to select from in On mode.

To set the backlight, press the BACKLIGHT button repeatedly and the brightness of the display will change in the below sequence on every press:

Backlight off > Backlight 01 > Backlight 02 > Backlight 03 > Backlight off >......

In Standby mode, switch the display brightness between "Backlight 01" and "Backlight Off" by pressing the BACKLIGHT button.

The display backlight level is defaulted to "Backlight 01" in AC standby and "Backlight 03" during operation. This is resumed only when the factory reset has taken place.

System Reset

There may be times when you need to reset your unit back to the factory settings especially when you have moved house. If you experience reception problems you may want to reset and try again. If you move to another part of the country and pick up the local and national DAB stations in that area, your previously tuned channels may no longer be available.

1. Press and hold the MENU button until the "Press SELECT to confirm reset" shows on the display.
2. Press the SELECT button to start the system reset, "Restarting..." will show on the display. After the reset is complete, the unit will go to standby mode.
3. Press the STANDBY ⏻ button again to turn the unit on, the unit will then start scanning for DAB channels immediately.

After the system reset, all the tuned stations, DAB & FM preset stations and alarm settings will be erased.

DAB Operation

If the unit is connected to the mains power and then switched on from standby for the first time, the unit will automatically enter into the DAB mode and perform auto scan function. During the scan the LCD display will show "Scanning..." together with a slide bar that indicates the progress of the scan and the amount of stations that have been found so far.

Once the scan has finished, the unit will select the first alphanumerically found station. Explore the found stations by pressing the ▲ buttons. When you find a station that you would like to listen to, press the SELECT button.

If no stations are found after auto scan, the unit will then enter into the Tune Select Menu. Press the ▲ buttons and then press the SELECT button to select manual tune or auto scan modes for stations.

DAB Auto Scan

The auto scan will search for the entire DAB Band III channels. After the scan has finished, the first alphanumerically found station will be automatically selected.

Full auto scan will not replace the DAB stations in memory. If you want to remove all the previously scanned stations, a system reset is required.

1. To activate auto scan, first press the MENU button to enter into the Tune Select Menu. Then press the ▲▼buttons to select "Autoscan", and then press the SELECT button to confirm. The display will show "Scanning ..." and a progressing slide bar. This may take a few minutes, depending on the number of stations found.

2. All the stations that have been found will be stored automatically. To explore the found stations, press the ▲ buttons. Press the SELECT button to confirm.

DAB Autoscan

Secondary Services

You may see a "»" symbol after the name of the primary station during exploring the found stations by pressing the ▲ buttons. This indicates that there are secondary services available to that station. These secondary services contain extra services that are related to the primary station. e.g. a sports station may want to add extra commentaries. The secondary services are inserted directly after the primary station in the station list.

To select the secondary station, press the ▲ buttons repeatedly until you find the secondary service and press the SELECT button to confirm. When the secondary service ends, the unit will automatically switch back to the primary station.

Manual Tuning

As well as the auto tune function, you can manually tune the receiver. This can help you when aligning your aerial or when adding stations that were missed while auto tuning.

1. Press the MENU button and then press the SELECT button to select Manual tune, the display will now show Manual tune.
2. Press the buttons to cycle through the DAB channels, which are numbered from 5A to 13F.
3. After your desired channel number is selected, press the SELECT button to confirm, the top line will now display the channel number, the frequency and the multiplex name. The bottom line will display the signal strength.
4. Press the SELECT button to listen to this channel or press the ▲ buttons to continue manual tuning.

Storing Stations

You can store up to 4 of your favourite 4 DAB stations to the memory. This will enable you to access your favourite stations quickly and easily.

To store a preset, you must first be listening to the station that you would like to save, press and hold the PRESET 1-4 buttons. The station will be stored and the display will then show "Preset # saved".

Recalling a Stored Station

1. Once you have saved a station to one of the preset buttons, you can recall it by pressing the PRESET 1-4 buttons.
2. If you choose a preset that hasn't been allocated a station, "Preset # empty" will be displayed.

DAB Display Modes

The station name will be displayed on the top line of the LCD display.

Every time you press the INFO button, the bottom line of the display will cycle through the following display modes: DLS, Prg Type, Multiplex, Time/Date, Channel no. /Frequency, Bitrate / Radio Mode (DAB/DAB+), Signal Strength.

DLS (Dynamic Label Segment)

Dynamic label segment is a scrolling message that the broadcaster may include with their transmissions. The message usually includes information, such as program details etc.

Prg Type (Programme Type)

This describes the "Style" or "genre" of music that is being broadcast e.g. "Rock" or "Classical". If the information is not available, the display will show .

Multiplex

A multiplex is a collection of radio stations that are bundled and transmitted on one frequency. There are national and local multiplexes. Local ones contain stations that are specific to that area.

Time/Date

The broadcaster (Radio station) provides clock and date information automatically so there's no need to manually set this information. In the unlikely event that the broadcaster does not transmit any clock information, the display will show the incorrect time and date.

Channel no. / Frequency

The Channel no. and frequency of the present station will be displayed, such as "11C 220.352MHz".

Bitrate/ Radio Mode (DAB/DAB+)

The display will show the radio mode (DAB or DAB+) and the digital audio bit rate being received.

Signal Strength

The display will show a slide bar to indicate the signal strength, the stronger the signal, the longer the bar will be from left to right.

FM Operation

Switching from DAB to FM Mode

To switch the unit from DAB to FM mode, press the DAB/FM button once. The top line of the display will show FM and the frequency or the station name if a RDS station is tuned in.

Auto Scan

To search for an FM station, press and hold the ▲▼ buttons to start the auto scan. The display will show "Searching ... >." or "Searching ... <.". Once a station has been found, the scanning will stop automatically.

Manual Scan

To search for FM stations manually, press the ▲ buttons repeatedly until your desired frequency is reached.

Audio Mode

Press the SELECT button to toggle between the Auto or Mono audio mode.

The unit will automatically switch between stereo and mono mode, when auto mode is selected but you can override this and switch this function manually by changing it to mono mode. This is helpful when receiving poor signal reception.

During FM stereo reception, the received L/R stereo sound will be automatically combined to one single channel to suit the single speaker design of the unit.

Storing Stations

You can store up to 4 of your favourite 4 FM stations to the memory. This will enable you to access your favourite stations quickly and easily.

FM Display Modes

Every time you press the INFO button, the display will cycle through the following display modes: Radio Text, Frequency, Program Type, Time/Date.

Radio Text

As with DAB, the broadcaster can include a scrolling text that displays information about the current program. If Radio text information is not available, then the display will show .

Frequency

This shows the frequency of the current station. If RDS is not available, the display will show .

Program Type

This describes the "Style" or "genre" of music that is being broadcast e.g. "Rock" or "Classical". If the information is not available, the display will show .

Time/Date

The DAB broadcaster (Radio station) provides clock and date information automatically so there's no need to manually set this information. In the unlikely event that the broadcaster does not transmit any clock information, the display will show the incorrect time and date.

Maintenance

Ensure to unplug the unit from the mains socket before cleaning.

• To clean the unit, wipe the case with a slightly moist, lint-free cloth.
- Do not use any cleaning fluids containing alcohol, ammonia or abrasives.
• Do not spray an aerosol at or near the unit.

Hints and Tips

If a problem does occur, it may often be due to something very minor. The following table contains various tips.

Problem Solution
No Sound Adjust the volume control, it may not be turned up.
Static Sound Signal reception too low. Adjust the aerial or move the unit to a stronger signal location.
Sound is distorted Volume is too high. Adjust the volume control.
Desired station not found	Weak signal. Use the Manual Tune function.
The display shows “DAB” and “Manual Tune” after auto scanning	No DAB coverage in your area or poor reception. Adjust the position of the aerial.
	Poor reception. Adjust the position of the aerial.
The display is blank This may occur if the broadcaster changes the label of a service or removes a label while tuned. The unit will try to retune or perform a scan.

If the unit is not working properly disconnect the power source and then reconnect it.

Damage

Location of Unit

• The unit must be placed on a flat stable surface and should not be subjected to vibrations.
• Do not place the unit on sloped or unstable surfaces as the unit may fall off or tip over.
  • The mains socket must be located near the unit and should be easily accessible.
  • This unit is designed for indoor use only.

Temperature

• Avoid extreme degrees of temperature, either hot or cold. Place the unit well away from heat sources such as radiators or gas/electric fires.
• Avoid exposure to direct sunlight and other sources of heat.

Naked Flames

- Never place any type of candle or naked flame on the top of or near the unit.

Moisture

• To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock or product damage, do not expose this unit to rain, moisture, dripping or splashing. No objects filled with liquids, such as vases, should be placed on the unit.
• If you spill any liquid into the unit, it can cause serious damage. Switch it off at the mains immediately. Withdraw the mains plug and consult your dealer.

Mains Cable

- Never let anyone especially children push anything into the holes, slots or any other openings in the case - this could result in a fatal electric shock.

Service

• To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not remove screws. The unit does not contain any user-serviceable parts. Please leave all maintenance work to qualified personnel.
