How do I set the time on my Butler coffee maker?

Mix 100 ml acetic acid with 300 ml cold water (or use a commercial descaler). Pour into the reservoir, run half the solution through, wait 10 minutes, then run the rest. Rinse by running 3 pots of fresh water through the machine.

Can I use the coffee maker without a filter?

No, you must use a paper filter (size 1x4) in the filter holder. Without a filter, coffee grounds will enter the carafe and may clog the machine.

What does the anti-drip valve do?

The anti-drip valve allows you to remove the carafe during brewing to pour a cup. It closes to prevent coffee from dripping onto the hotplate. Replace the carafe within 30 seconds to avoid overflow.

How do I clean the coffee maker?

Unplug and let cool. Wash the filter holder and glass pot with dish soap. Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not submerge the appliance in water or use abrasive cleaners.

Why does the coffee taste weak?

Possible reasons: too little coffee grounds, coarse grind, or using a filter that is too large. Ensure you fill the filter properly and use the correct filter size (1x4). Also check that the water level does not exceed the MAX mark.

How long does the keep-warm function last?

The appliance automatically switches off approximately 2 hours after brewing is completed. The hotplate stays on during this time to keep the coffee warm.

What should I do if the carafe is cracked?

Do not use a cracked carafe. It may break during use. Contact customer service or the retailer for a replacement. Use only the original glass pot designed for this model.

To get the best out of your new appliance, please read this user guide carefully before using it for the first time. Take particular note of the safety precautions. We also recommend that you keep the instructions for future reference.

SAFETY MEASURES

Normal use of the appliance

• Incorrect use of this appliance may cause personal injury and damage.
• Use for its intended purpose only. The manufacturer is not responsible for any injury or damage resulting from incorrect use or handling (see also Guarantee Terms).
• For connection to 230 V, 50 Hz only.
• Never switch appliance on unless there is water in the reservoir or coffee in the coffee pot.
• Never put hot or boiling water in the reservoir. Use cold water only.
• Ensure the appliance is switched off when filling with water.
• The water level in the reservoir must not exceed the MAX mark on the water level gauge.
• Do not touch the hotplate.
• Do not submerge in water or any other liquid.
• Never leave unattended when in use, and keep an eye on children.
• Freshly-brewed coffee and the steam it generates are very hot. Take care to avoid scalding yourself or others.
• For domestic use only. Not for outdoor or commercial use.

Positioning the appliance

• Always place the appliance at the back of a kitchen counter and at a safe distance from flammable objects such as curtains, tablecloths or similar.
• Do not cover.
• Do not allow the cord to hang over the edge of a table/counter, and keep it away from hot objects and naked flames.

Cord, plug and mains socket

• Check regularly that neither cord nor plug is damaged and do not use if they are, or if the appliance has been dropped or damaged in any other way.
• If the appliance or plug is damaged, it must be inspected and if necessary, repaired by an authorised repair engineer, otherwise there is a risk of electric shock. Never try to repair the appliance yourself.
• Remove the plug from the socket before cleaning.
• Avoid pulling the cord when removing the plug from the socket. Instead, hold the plug.
• Check that it is not possible to pull or trip over the cord or any extension cord.

Handling the glass pot

• Never put the glass pot on a cooking ring or in an oven/microwave oven.
• Never set a hot glass pot down on a wet or cold surface.
• Do not use the pot if it is cracked, has a loose or defective handle, or it is broken in any other way.

PRIOR TO FIRST USE

• Read the safety instructions through carefully.
• Ensure that the cord is fully extended.
  • Clean glass pot (9) in soapy water.
• To rinse the appliance through, pass a potful of water through the machine before using it for the first time.

o Follow the instructions in "Operating the appliance", but WITHOUT using a filter or coffee.

SETTING THE TIMER AND START TIME

The appliance has a built-in timer. You can use this to set the appliance to start at a given time (see "Operating the appliance").

NOTE: The timer will require resetting each time the appliance has been disconnected from the mains. Reset the time when reconnecting the appliance.

Setting the clock

• Place the plug (11) in the socket. The clock on the display (f) will show "12:00" and flash.
• Press the "PRO" button (c) once. The display will show "SET TIME" in the top left corner.
• You can now set the time using the HR (g) button for hours and MIN (e) button for minutes.
• Setting will stop automatically when you have not pressed any button for approx. 8 seconds. The clock has now been set.

OPERATING THE APPLIANCE

Regardless of whether you want to make coffee with or without the time, the start procedure is always as follows:

• Pour fresh water into the glass pot.
- Lift the cover (1) of the water reservoir, and carefully pour the water from the glass pot into the reservoir (2).
- Close the pot lid, and place it on the hot plate (7). Check it is correctly positioned, so that the anti-drip valve (6) is pressed upwards and is opened.

• Open the filter holder (4) using the handle (5).
• Place a coffee filter (size 1 x 4) in the filter holder and fill with coffee.
• Close the reservoir and filter holder.

Brewing coffee

• Press the start/stop button (a) once to start the appliance. The start/stop indicator (h) will go red, and the appliance will brew the coffee.
• Press the start/stop button to switch the appliance off when brewing is completed. The start/stop indicator will go out and the appliance will be switched off.
• NOTE: The appliance will switch off automatically approx. 2 hours after brewing is completed.

Using the timer

To use the automatic timer function, check that the clock and start time required are set correctly (see "Setting the clock/-timer").

• Press the "PRO" button twice, and check that the start time is correct.
• Press the "AUTO" button (b) to activate the timer. The timer indicator (d) will go green. This means the timer is activated.
• When the start time arrives, the green light will go out and the red start/stop indicator light will come on. The appliance will now automatically start to brew coffee.
• Press the start/stop button to switch the appliance off when brewing is completed. The start/stop indicator will go out and the appliance will be switched off.
• NOTE: The appliance will switch off automatically approx. 2 hours after brewing is completed.

The appliance has an anti-drip valve which allows you to remove the glass pot during brewing to pour a cup of coffee. When the pot is removed, the valve closes, keeping the coffee in the filter holder until it is replaced on the hot plate again.

NOTE: To stop the coffee in the filter holder from running over, always return the pot to the appliance as quickly as possible. Do not remove the pot from the appliance for more than half a minute.

CLEANING

• Before cleaning, remove the plug from the wall socket and allow to cool down.
• The filter holder and glass pot can be washed using normal washing-up liquid.
• The best way to clean the coffee maker itself is to wipe it with a damp cloth using hot water and a little washing-up liquid.
• Do not use any kind of strong or abrasive cleaning agent on the appliance or its accessories. Never use a scouring sponge or similar to clean it, as the surface may be damaged.
  • NOTE: The device must not be submerged in any form of liquid.

DESCALING

The lime content of ordinary tap water means limescale may gradually be deposited inside. This limescale may be loosened using acetic acid (NOT ordinary vinegar) or descaler, available in supermarkets, etc.

1. Mix 100 ml acetic acid with 300 ml cold water, or follow the instructions on the descaler packaging.
2. Pour the solution into the reservoir and start the appliance at the start/stop button.
3. Allow half of the solution to run through the coffee maker, and then switch it off for approximately 10 minutes.
4. When the 10 minutes are up, switch the appliance on again and allow the remainder of the solution to run through it.
5. To remove the final residues of limescale and acetic acid, pour a potful of cold water into the water reservoir, switch on and allow the water to pass through.
6. Pass fresh water through the machine 3 times (as described in point 5).
7. The appliance now ready for use.

FOR UNITED KINGDOM ONLY Plug wiring:

This product is fitted with a BS 1363 13-amp plug. If you have to replace the fuse, only those that are ASTA or BSI approved to BS1362 and with a rated current of 13 amps should be used. If there is a fuse cover fitted, this cover must be refitted after changing the fuse. If the fuse cover is lost or damaged, the plug must not be used. You must also check if the socket outlets in your home fit with the plug of the appliance. If the socket outlet in your home does not fit with the plug, the plug must be removed and disposed of safely as insertion of the plug into the socket is likely to cause electric hazard. A replacement plug should be wired according to following description.

The wire that is coloured blue must be connected to the terminal that is marked with the letter N or coloured black.

The wire that is couloured brown must be connected to the terminal that is marked with the letter L or coloured red.
