Frequently Asked Questions - Muli Mixer 10 M-AUDIO

How do I connect a microphone to the MultiMixer 10?
Connect your XLR microphone to inputs 1 or 2 using an XLR-to-1/4" adapter. Set the corresponding gain dip switch on the side to the up (mic) position. Adjust the channel gain and master volume as needed.
Can I use the MultiMixer with my computer soundcard?
Yes, connect the stereo output from your soundcard to inputs 3 and 4 (RCA) or use inputs 7/8 or 9/10 with a 1/8" stereo cable. Adjust the pan controls to position the sound in the stereo field.
What power adapter does the MultiMixer 10 require?
It requires a 9V AC, 300mA power adapter. The included adapter must be plugged into the back power jack for operation. The power LED will light when connected.
What does the clip LED indicate?
The clip LED shows when the internal main amplifiers are clipping. Occasional flashing is acceptable, but if it stays solidly lit, reduce the input gain or source level to avoid distortion.
How do I set the gain correctly?
Start with the channel gain at the center detent (unity gain). Play your source at normal level. If the signal is too weak, increase gain; if you hear distortion or the clip LED lights solid, decrease gain. The goal is a clean signal without clipping.
Can I connect headphones to the MultiMixer?
Yes, plug headphones into the 1/8" stereo jack on the front. The headphone level is controlled by the master volume pots. For 1/4" headphones, use an adapter. This jack can also serve as an auxiliary output.
What are unity gain inputs (7/8 and 9/10) used for?
These are fixed-level stereo inputs ideal as returns or AV inputs. Since they have no volume or pan controls, you must control the level at the source, such as a CD player or multimedia device.
How do I avoid distortion when using synthesizers?
Set the synth's output volume to a moderate level. On the MultiMixer, keep the channel gain and master levels at reasonable settings. If the clip LED lights solidly, reduce the synth's output or the mixer's gain.
Can the MultiMixer be used as a sub-mixer?
Yes, it can be used to mix multiple line-level sources and send the output to another mixer, recorder, or powered speakers. Use the main outputs (RCA or 1/8" jack) to connect to the next device.
What is the difference between inputs 1-2 and 3-6?
Inputs 1 and 2 are 1/4" mono jacks with switchable mic/line gain. Inputs 3-6 are RCA mono jacks for line-level sources. Both have individual gain and pan controls. Inputs 1-2 can accept microphones via adapter.

MultiMixer™10 is an extremely low noise, professional quality, 10 channel stereo line mixer. The 6 panable inputs (1 through 6) enable you to place a sound source anywhere in the stereo field. 2 of the 6 inputs (1 and 2) can have their gain set for either line level or microphone use. 4 more channels (7, 8, 9 and 10) are unity gain inputs for which there are no volume or pan controls. These channels have to be controlled “at the source,” so they are ideal for use as returns or AV ins. MultiMixer 10 comes with an external 9 volt, 300 milliamp ac power adaptor. This adaptor should be plugged into a standard wall socket and then into the MultiMixer’s back power jack. When this is done the MultiMixer power LED will light. MultiMixer will not work unless power is plugged in.

Multimedia Mixing. Many multimedia applications use multiple sound sources. In a typical multimedia application you might plug the MultiMixer in as follows: 1.) plug your microphones into inputs 1 and 2 making sure that the gain switches (on the side of the unit) are switched “up” to the mic setting; 2.) connect the stereo output from your computer soundcard to MultiMixer inputs 3 and 4; 3.) connect outputs from your MIDI tone module to inputs 5 and 6; and 4.) connect the stereo audio output from a CD-ROM to unity gain stereo input 9/10. Now, you can use the MultiMixer pan pots to position the sounds of channels 1 through 6 wherever you want them.

Tips. If you set the MultiMixer's gains too high for a given input, you may encounter distortion or signal clipping (red clipping LED stays solidly lit). This will surely happen if you plug in a synthesizer with its channel gain set to full volume and also set MultiMixer left and right master level pots to full. If you hear any distortion try reducing the keyboard output level. Your MultiMixer should always sound clean and noise free.

MultiMixer 10 Description:

  • Front – Headphones. 1/8" stereo jack. Plug your headphones in here. If you are using phones with a 1/4" jack you will need an adaptor. You can also use the headphone jack as an auxiliary output.
  • Top – 1-6 Gain. Adjustable gain levels for each individual input. These are true gain controls, not volume pots. What this means is that the MultiMixer never amplifies the signal more than necessary so the noise level is always as low as possible (of course, if your sound source is noisy the output will be too). The center detent position is roughly unity gain. (Remember, the overall gain of channels 1 and 2 is set using the dip switches on the left side of the MultiMixer)
  • Top – 1-6 Pan. Controls where in the stereo image the sound will appear. Adjustable from all the way left to all the way right. The center detent position is equal mix right and left.
  • Top – Master Levels (Left and Right). Control the overall left and right output levels. These pots also control the level of the headphone output.
  • Top – Power LED. Shows when MultiMixer6 is on.

  • Top – Signal Level LED. Shows when any audio signal is coming into the MultiMixer.

  • Top – Clip LED. Shows when the internal main amplifiers inside of the MultiMixer are clipping. It is acceptable to see these LEDs light occasionally, but if they are solidly lit you should find the individual signal that is too hot and turn it down.
  • Back – Inputs 1 and 2. 1/4" mono phone jacks. These two inputs may be set to either mic or line level using the gain dip switches on the left side of the unit. Tip: if you are using MultiMixer with an XLR microphone you will have to get an XLR to 1/4" adaptor.
  • Back – Inputs 3 through 6. RCA mono jacks. These are line level mono inputs.
  • Back – Inputs 7/8 and 9/10 (Stereo). 1/8" stereo mini-jacks. These are line level unity gain stereo inputs. They may be used as returns or AV/multimedia ins. Tip: since the gain and balance of these inputs are fixed you must be able to control these signals at their source.
  • Back – Main Outputs (L, R). RCA jacks. These are the main MultiMixer left and right line level outputs. They should go to either a power amplifier or powered speaker inputs.
  • Back – Main Output (Stereo). 1/8" stereo jack. Same as the Main L and R outputs above except on stereo jack.
  • Back – 9v ac power. The jack into which you plug a 9v 300 milliamp ac power adapter. Important: MultiMixer will not work unless it receives power at this jack.
  • Side – Gain Dip Switches. These two dip switches independently control the gain of channels 1 and 2. In the up position the gain is set for microphones and in the down position for line level signals.
