Serve

You must observe the following rules in order to serve in the correct manner.

- The entire shuttlecock must, at the moment it meets the racquet, be underneath the player's waistline.

- The racquet must be pointing downwards.

- Both feet of the person serving must remain at least partly on the ground until the serve has been completed. Turning or dragging of the feet is not allowed.

- Both feet must be within the court markings of the service area without touching the lines.

- It is not permitted to delay the serve once the service arm has begun its forwards movement intended to hit the shuttlecock. This rule applies until the service is completed.

- Once the shuttlecock has left the racquet, it must proceed in an aerial path, directly over the net.

- If the service is not returned, the shuttlecock must land in the diagonally opposing court section.

Rallypoint scoring system

The current IBF (International Badminton Federation) scoring system is the Rallypoint scoring system. Each player can score a point regardless of who has served. Points are awarded as soon as the shuttlecock touches the opponent's section of the court, or if the opponent makes one of the following mistakes:

  • The shuttlecock is served from above the waistline.
  • The shuttlecock lands in a section of the opponent's court not intended for receiving service, or lands outside of the court markings altogether.
  • The shuttlecock hits the net or travels underneath the net before travelling over the net itself.
  • The racquet or the player touches the net during play.
  • The shuttlecock touches the player's body.
  • The shuttlecock is played twice by one player in succession.

Two sets of 21 points each are played. A player has won a set if he or she reaches a total of 21 points first, and has at least 2 points more than the opposing player. With the scores at 21:20, the game is extended until a player leads by 2 points or is the first to reach 30 points. Therefore, a set result of 30:29 is possible. For every rally won, a player will receive a point awarded. In addition, the player who won the preceding rally receives right of service. The right of service changes when a mistake is made by the server.
