Frequently Asked Questions - LSC-5 JobSite

What is the difference between LSC-5 and LSC-5R?
The LSC-5 has a standard grille while the LSC-5R has a recessed appearance that resembles typical recessed light fixtures. Both have similar performance specifications.
Can I paint the speaker grille?
Yes, the grille can be painted. For best results, use a spray gun with thinned paint and apply several light coats to prevent clogging the holes. Paint both sides to cover all white paint.
How do I remove the grille from the LSC-5?
Bend a small paper clip (size #1) into an 'L' shape. Insert the bent end into a hole near the edge of the grille and pull towards you using pliers.
What tools are needed for installation?
You will need a stud locator (for existing construction), drywall saw, pencil, cordless screwdriver with No2 Philips bit, wire stripper, and wire labels.
Can I install these speakers in a new construction ceiling?
Yes, for new construction you should install the optional JobSite NCB-5 ceiling brackets before drywall is applied. Then follow the installation steps after the drywall is cut.
What is the maximum wire gauge I can use?
The terminal accepts up to 12 gauge speaker wire. Ensure you strip 1/4 inch of insulation and twist the strands tightly before connecting.
How do I avoid damaging the speakers when using high volume?
Listen for harsh treble which indicates clipping distortion from the amplifier. If you hear harsh treble, turn the volume down immediately to prevent speaker damage. Using a larger amplifier helps avoid clipping.
What is the depth clearance required behind the ceiling?
You need at least 4 inches of depth behind the ceiling for the speaker to fit. Use the coat hanger method described in the manual to check for obstructions.
Can I use these speakers in bathrooms or outdoor covered areas?
Yes, the LSC-5 features rust-proof aluminum grilles and moisture-resistant construction, making it suitable for moist environments such as bathrooms or covered patios.
What is the warranty period and how do I claim it?
The LSC-5/5R has a 5-year limited warranty. To claim warranty service, write to JobSite with your name, address, phone, model/serial numbers, and a description of the problem. Obtain a Return Authorization number before returning the product.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

The illustration shows how a typical JobSite LSC loudspeaker mounts into a ceiling.

Ceiling Bracket serves as a "hole saver" when drywall has not been applied. Cannot use when installing loudspeaker in existing ceilings.

JobSite LSC-5 - PRODUCT OVERVIEW - 1

text_image Knockout wire tie allows the wire to be secured to the bracket throughout the new construction process. It knocks out cleanly when the speaker is installed. Wings instantly snap into the bracket without screws. Dogs swivel 90°, then clamp the speaker frame to the drywall. Frames are molded with a slight texture to assure good paint adhesion. Mounting screws tighten the "dogs", clamping the speaker to the drywall. Wings are scored for easy size trimming. Brackets and wings attach to the ceiling joists with nails or screws.

Rust-proof aluminum grilles make the loudspeaker perfect for moist environments. (LSC-5 ONLY)

PREPARING FOR INSTALLATION

If you are installing the LSC-5/LSC-5R into an existing ceiling, take time to consider any possible obstructions which may be hidden inside the ceiling: ceiling joists, electrical wiring, telephone wiring, plumbing, AC or heating conduit and ductwork.

Determine the best mounting locations based on the room layout. Before cutting any holes, make sure the area behind both speakers is clear for installation. Speakers provide the best coverage, when centered in the room. Line up the speakers with a permanently mounted ceiling fixture such as can lights, or a light fixture.

If you are installing the speakers into a new ceiling follow the above recommendations and install a set of JobSite NCB-5 Ceiling Brackets, prior to drywall installation.

Run speaker wire from each location to the amplifier location. Label the speakers wires at the amplifier end, so you know which wire goes to each speaker.

TOOLS REQUIRED

■ Stud Locator (for existing construction)
Drywall saw (for existing construction)
■ Pencil (for existing construction)
- Cordless screwdriver with No2 Philips bit
Wire stripper
Wire labels

INSTALLATION

Installation Existing Construction:

  1. Use a stud locator to identify the location of the ceiling joists on each side of the proposed loudspeaker mounting location.
  2. Mark ceiling joists' edges, using masking tape.
  3. Repeat this process for the other loudspeaker locations.
  4. You may have to adjust the loudspeaker mounting locations based on how the ceiling joists line up with the proposed speaker mounting locations.
  5. Check for clearance using the following method:

a. Drill a 1/4" pilot hole in the center of the intended speaker location.
b. Cut a foot-long piece of coat hanger.
c. Bend the wire, creating a right angle, leaving 4-1/4" at one end.
d. Poke the "L-shaped" wire into the pilot hole and turn it in a complete circle, checking for obstructions.
e. Push it up into the ceiling cavity to make sure you have approximately 4" of depth.
f. If the coat hanger's movement is obstructed by anything, fill the hole(s) with spackle and try another location.

  1. Locate the hole template and remove the inside portion of it. The inside portion can be used as a paint mask, if you are painting the frame of the loudspeaker.
  2. Use a pencil and hole template to trace the hole outline in the desired location on the ceiling.
  3. Use a drywall saw to cut along the penciled line.

  4. Strip 1/4" of insulation from the end of each wire coming from the amplifier.

  5. Tightly twist the end of each wire until no frayed ends remain.
  6. Attach the speaker wires to the speaker terminal connectors. Connect the negative output from the amplifier to the black terminal and the positive output to the red terminal.
  7. There are four clamps "dogs" which hold each speaker in place. Rotate all the dogs inward.
  8. Insert the loudspeaker into the cutout in the ceiling.
  9. The dogs are tightened via four front-baffle screws. Tighten the dogs by turning the screws clockwise, while pressing the loudspeaker against the ceiling. NOTE: DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THESE SCREWS. Over-tightening the screws may make the grille difficult to install.
  10. Install the grille into the speaker.
  11. Repeat this procedure for the next speaker.

Installation New Construction:

Install the proper ceiling bracket for this loudspeaker (NCB-5) using the instructions supplied with the bracket. After the hole is cut in the drywall per the bracket instructions, perform the following steps:

  1. Strip 1/4" of insulation from the end of each wire coming from the amplifier.
  2. Tightly twist the end of each wire until no frayed ends remain.

  3. Attach the speaker wires to the speaker terminal connectors. Connect the negative output from the amplifier to the black terminal and the positive output from the amplifier to the red terminal.

  4. There are four clamps "dogs" which hold each speaker in place. Rotate all the dogs inward.
  5. Insert the loudspeaker into the cutout in the ceiling.
  7. Install the grille into the speaker.
  8. Repeat this procedure for the next speaker.

Removing the Grilles:

To remove the grille from the LSC-5, obtain a small paper clip (size #1, common) and bend the last quarter inch of it into an "L" shape. Holding the paper clip with a pair of pliers, insert the end with the "L" into a hole near the edge of the grille. Remove the grille by pulling the paper clip towards you.

For the LSC-5R, press your fingers against the inside of the grille's white collar. While pressing against the collar, pull it towards you.

Painting the Speakers:

The speakers must be masked prior to painting them. The inside circular portion of the hole template can be used as a paint mask. Remove the outside portion of the template by gently pulling along the perforation. Affix the mask to the front of the speaker using a piece of tape. Fold the tape onto itself to form a double-sided loop. Affix the tape to the tweeter and place the mask onto the speaker.

Painting the Grilles:

The LSC-5/5R grilles should be painted before they are installed on the speakers. The best results will be obtained by using a spray gun or airless sprayer. Thin the paint, and then apply several light coats. This technique helps prevent clogging of grille holes. Paint both sides of the grille to cover all the white paint.

OPERATION

Listening at Higher Volumes:

It requires more power to achieve a reasonable volume of sound in a large room than it does in a small room. It is possible to turn the volume so high that the amplifier runs out of power. This creates “clipping” distortion.

Clipping distortion makes treble sound very harsh and unmusical. When you hear harsh sounding treble from any good speaker, turn the volume down immediately! You are much less likely to damage a speaker with a large amplifier because it will be very loud indeed before it produces any clipping distortion.
