Frequently Asked Questions - DV-C600 ONKYO

What types of discs can the ONKYO DV-C600 play?
The DV-C600 can play DVD video discs, Video CDs (version 1.1 and 2.0), and audio CDs. It cannot play CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, or discs with irregular shapes. See manual page 9 for more details.
How do I connect the DV-C600 to my TV for the best picture quality?
For the best picture quality, use the component video outputs (Y, Cb, Cr) if your TV supports them. Alternatively, use the S-video output. If using composite video, connect the yellow RCA jack. Ensure the TV is set to the correct input. See pages 10-11.
Why is there no sound from my speakers?
Check that the audio cables are securely connected and that the amplifier or TV is set to the correct input. Verify the Audio Out Select setting in the setup menu: choose 'Bitstream' if using digital connection with a decoder, 'PCM' for stereo digital, or 'Analog 2ch' for analog. Also check if the connected device is powered on. See page 36.
How can I program a custom playback order for multiple discs?
Press the MEMORY button to enter the memory programming mode. Use the numeric buttons to enter disc number (D), title/track number (T), and chapter number (C) for each step. You can program up to 28 steps. Press PLAY to start the sequence. See pages 21-23.
What should I do if the remote control does not work?
First, replace the batteries with two new AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity. Point the remote directly at the sensor on the unit within about 5 meters (16 feet). Remove any obstacles. If still not working, try resetting the DVD player by unplugging it for 5 seconds and plugging back in. See pages 8 and 40.
How do I set the Parental Lock to restrict certain DVDs?
Press the SETUP button, go to 'OPERATION Settings', select Parental Lock, and enter a 4-digit code. Then choose the rating level (e.g., level 7 for NC-17, level 3 for PG). To disable, set it to 'Off'. See pages 37-38.
Can the DV-C600 play DTS audio CDs?
Yes, the DV-C600 is DTS compatible. To play DTS-encoded discs, connect a digital audio output (coaxial or optical) to an amplifier with a DTS decoder. Set Audio Out Select to 'Bitstream' and select 'DTS' in the recording system settings. See pages 13 and 29.
How do I clean the disc and the unit?
For discs, wipe from the center outward with a soft cloth. For the unit, use a soft cloth slightly dampened with mild detergent and water, then dry with a clean cloth. Never use thinners, alcohol, or abrasive cleaners. See pages 5 and 9.
Why does the picture distort occasionally during playback?
This may be due to the disc being dirty – clean it as described. Also, the fast forward or reverse function can cause temporary distortion. If using component video, ensure the TV is properly calibrated. If distortion persists, check the disc for scratches. See troubleshooting on page 40.
How do I use the A-B repeat function to loop a scene?
During playback, press the A-B button at the start of the scene (point A). Then press A-B again at the end (point B). The player will automatically loop the selected segment. To cancel, press CLEAR. This works for DVD, VCD, and CD. See page 21.

Do not handle this unit or power cord when your hands are wet or damp. If water or any other liquid enters the case, take this unit to an authorized service center for inspection.

5. Location of this unit

- Place this unit in a well-ventilated location.

Take special care to provide plenty of ventilation on all sides of this unit especially when it is placed in an audio rack. If ventilation is blocked, this unit may overheat and malfunction.

- Do not expose this unit to direct sunlight or heating units as this unit's internal temperature may rise and shorten the life of the pickup.

- Avoid damp and dusty places and places directly affected by vibrations from the speakers. In particular, avoid placing the unit one or above one of the speakers.

- Be sure this unit is placed in a horizontal position. Never place it on its side or on a slanted surface as it may malfunction.

- When you place this DVD Changer near a TV, radio, or VCR, the playback picture may become poor and the sound may be distorted. In this case, place the DVD Changer away from the TV, radio, or VCR.

6.Care

From time to time you should wipe the front and rear panels and the cabinet with a soft cloth. For heavier dirt, dampen a soft cloth in a weak solution of mild detergent and water, wring it out dry, and wipe off the dirt. Following this, dry immediately with a clean cloth. Do not use rough material, thinners, alcohol or other chemical solvents or cloths since these could damage the finish or remove the panel lettering.

7. Notes on Handling

- When shipping the DVD Changer, use the original shipping carton and packing materials. For maximum protection, repack the unit as it was originally packed at the factory.

- Do not use volatile liquids, such as insect spray, near the DVD Changer. Do not leave rubber or plastic products in contact with the DVD Changer for a long time. They will leave marks on the finish.

- The top and rear panels of the DVD Changer may become warm after a long period of use. This is not a malfunction.

- When the DVD Changer is not in use, be sure to remove the disc and turn off the power.

- If you do not use the DVD Changer for a long period, the unit may not function properly in the future. Turn on and use the DVD Changer occasionally.

8.To Obtain a Clear Picture

The DVD Changer is a high technology, precision device. If the optical pick-up lens and disc drive parts are dirty or worn down, the picture quality becomes poor. To obtain a clear picture, we recommend regular inspection and maintenance (cleaning or parts replacement) every 1,000 hours of use depending on the operating environment. For details, contact your nearest dealer.

9. Notes on Moisture Condensation

Moisture condensation damages the DVD Changer.

Please read the following carefully.

Moisture condensation occurs, for example, when you pour a cold drink into a glass on a warm day. Drops of water form on the outside of the glass. In the same way, moisture may condense on the optical pick-up lens inside this unit, one of the most crucial internal parts of the DVD Changer.

Examples of moisture condensation! Optical pick-up lens

- Moisture condensation occurs in the following cases.

- When you bring the DVD Changer directly from a cold place to a warm place.

- When you use the DVD Changer in a room where you just turned on the heater, or a place where the cold wind from the air conditioner directly hits the unit.

- In summer, when you use the DVD Changer in a hot and humid place just after you move the unit from an air conditioned room.

- When you use the DVD Changer in a humid place.

It's too warm!

- Do not use the DVD Changer when moisture condensation may occur.

If you use the DVD Changer in such a situation, it may damage discs and internal parts. Remove the disc, connect the power cord of the DVD Changer to the wall outlet, turn on the DVD Changer, and leave it for two or three hours. After a few hours, the DVD Changer will have warmed up and evaporated any moisture. Keep the DVD Changer connected to the wall outlet and moisture condensation will seldom occur.

③ After batteries are installed and seated correctly, replace the compartment cover.

Notes:

  • Do not mix new batteries with old batteries or different kinds of batteries.
  • To avoid corrosion, remove the batteries if the remote controller is not to be used for a long time.
  • Remove dead batteries immediately to avoid damage from corrosion. If the remote controller doesn't operate smoothly, replace both the batteries at the same time.
  • The life of the batteries supplied is about six months but this will vary depending on usage.

Using the remote controller

Point the remote controller toward the remote control sensor.

Notes:

  • Place the unit away from strong light such as direct sunlight or inverted fluorescent light which can prevent proper operation of the remote controller.
  • Using another remote controller of the same type in the same room or using the unit near equipment which uses infrared rays may cause operational interference.
  • Do not put any object such as a book on the remote controller. The buttons of the remote controller may be pressed by mistake and drain the batteries.
  • Make sure the audio rack doors do not have colored glass. Placing the unit behind such doors may prevent proper remote controller operation.
  • If there is any obstacle between the remote controller and the remote control sensor, the remote controller will not operate.

■ Selecting the audio outputs

Your DV-C600 provides several options for audio playback: you can use the analog or one of the digital audio outputs. If the audio is to be played back by your TV set, connect the ANALOG OUTPUTs to the audio inputs of your TV set and activate them (“Analog 2ch”). See “Audio Settings” on page 36 for details.

Notes:

  • See also the instruction manual of the connected TV on how to select the signals transmitted by the DVD Changer.
  • Before connecting the DVD Changer to your TV, be sure to turn off the power to and unplug both units from the wall outlet.
  • If your TV set has one audio input (monaural), connect a Y cable adapter to the DV-C600's ANALOG OUTPUTs, and the other end of the adapter to the TV's audio input.
  • Be sure to establish a direct video connection between the DV-C600 and your TV set. Do not route the video signal through your VCR or other video component. Otherwise the picture may be distorted due to the DVD disc's copy protection.

Connecting to an Audio System and TV with COMPONENT VIDEO Inputs

- It is also possible to “split” the audio and video signals by sending the video signal to your TV set and the audio signal to an amplifier. Doing so has the advantage that you can:

  • Listen to the sound of audio CDs and DVD video discs in stereo (via the amplifier) or in Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic Surround or DTS (see pages 12, 13);
  • Enjoy a better picture quality of DVD video discs on a TV equipped with Component Video inputs than would be possible via an S-video connection.

Notes

• See also the manuals of your audio amplifier and TV set for establishing the correct connections and making the required settings.
- Before connecting the DVD Changer to other equipment, be sure to turn off the power and unplug all components from the wall outlet.
- This DVD Changer outputs a very dynamic audio signal. Be sure to set the amplifier's volume to a moderate listening level to avoid damaging your speakers due to sudden volume surges.
- Switch off the amplifier or select another input source before connecting or disconnecting the DVD Changer's power cord. If you leave the amplifier power on, the speakers may be damaged.

Your DV-C600 provides several options for audio playback: you can use the analog or one of the digital audio outputs. If your amplifier only provides analog inputs, use the DV-C600's ANALOG OUTPUTs and select them via the on-screen menu ("Analog 2ch"). See "Audio Settings" on page 36 for details.

■ COMPONENT VIDEO OUT (COLOR DIFFERENCE):

Some TVs or monitors are equipped with Color Difference inputs. Connecting the DV-C600 to these inputs allows you to enjoy a better picture quality. Be sure to match the DV-C600's VIDEO OUTPUTs with the Component Video inputs of your TV or monitor (see the illustration).

Actual labels for the Color Difference inputs may vary depending on the TV manufacturer (e.g. Y, B-Y, R-Y, etc.).

On some TVs or monitors, the color levels of the picture may be reduced slightly, or the tint may change. In such cases, adjust the TV or monitor for optimum performance.

Note:

- If you place the DVD Changer near a tuner or radio, the radio reception might be distorted due to interference. In this case, locate the DV-C600 away from the tuner or radio.

Other Audio Playback Options

■ You can enjoy high-quality surround audio playback by connecting the DV-C600 to an amplifier equipped with a Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic Surround, or DTS decoder. Furthermore you can transfer the signal of audio CDs to your amplifier in the digital domain if it is fitted with a digital input. See pages 10 and 11 for the video hookup of the DV-C600 to your TV set.

ONKYO DV-C600 - Other Audio Playback Options - 1

When using an optical digital cable, remove the cap from the DIGITAL OUTPUT OPTICAL connector and firmly fit the cable's jack into the connector. When not using this connector, keep it capped to protect it from dust intrusion.

Notes:

  • Before connecting the DVD Changer to other equipment, be sure to turn off the power and unplug all components from the wall outlet.
  • This DVD Changer outputs a very dynamic audio signal. Be sure to set the amplifier's volume to a moderate listening level to avoid damaging your speakers due to sudden volume surges.
  • Switch off the amplifier or select another input source before connecting or disconnecting the DVD Changer's power cord. If you leave the amplifier power on, the speakers may be damaged.

■ To obtain a higher picture quality

Occasionally, some picture distortion not usually visible during a normal telecast may appear on the TV screen during playback of a DVD video disc. This is due to the fact that DVD videos provide a higher resolution and therefore also more data to process. While the amount of noise depends on the TV you connect the DVD Changer to, reducing the sharpness setting on your TV when viewing DVD video discs may alleviate the problem.

■ Programming the D, T and C entries

Here are a few hints that explain the programming system and help you save time:

Note:

For Video and audio CDs, you can only program the disc ("D") and Track numbers. Track numbers are assigned to the "T" entry. The "C" entry only applies to DVD video discs.

Only specify what you does need to change:

Disc number: if a subsequent entry refers to the previously selected disc number, you do not need to enter it again for the new step. (Do not change the “—” setting for “D”.)

Title number (DVD video discs only): if a subsequent step refers to another Chapter of the previously selected Title, only entering the Chapter number is enough. (Do not change the “—” setting for the “D” and “T” entries.)

Chapter number (DVD video discs only): if you want the DV-C600 to play back all Chapters of the selected Title, leave the "C" entry blank.

Here are a few programming examples:

Chapters 25 and 12 of Title # 2 on disc #3 (two steps):

"Copy" the settings of the previous memory:

Doing so allows you to use the settings of the previous memory as a starting point and only change one entry. Example: if memory 1 refers to disc 3/Title 2/Chapter 25, while memory 2 needs to refer to disc 1/Title 2/Chapter 12, you can "copy" memory 1 to memory 2 and modify the "C" (chapter) entry:

  • Program the memory to be copied (example: memory 1), and press the ENTER button. The DVD Changer advances to memory 2.
  • Use the numeric buttons to enter the chapter number 12 on the black cursor on the "C" entry, then press the ENTER button, "D" and "T" on the memory 1 are copied to memory 2.

2Use the DISC1 - 6 buttons (or DISC + and DISC -) to select the disc that contains the next track you want to listen to.The number of the selected disc flashes on the display. If you want to play back all tracks of the selected disc, skip to step 4 without selecting a track.AL: means that all tracks will be played back.Tip:You can also use the DISC SKIP button on the DV-C600 to select the next disc.Note:You need to press one of these buttons within 8 seconds after pressing NEXT SELECTION. Otherwise, the Next Selection function will be cancelled. In that case, start again with step 1.
3Select the track using the numeric buttons. The number of the selected track flashes on the display. In that case, the display looks as follows:
4Press the NEXT SELECTION button to confirm your selection. The disc number and track number light up continuously. After a few moments, the disc and track numbers of the currently playing track reappear. You can check the next selection by pressing the NEXT SELECTION button. As soon as the current track is finished, the DVD Changer will play back the prepared track (or disc if you selected “AL”).Tip:NEXT SELECTION is also available during Memory playback (see page 22) and Random playback (see page 25). Using Next Selection, will cancel the Memory or Random playback function, however.Notes:Directly selecting another disc or track with the DISC SKIP button, DISC +/-, DOWN |◄◄ /UP ►►| or the numeric buttons after preparing a track with NEXT SELECTION cancels the Next Selection function. You can only prepare one track with Next Selection. See “Programming Memory Sequences” on page 22 for how to prepare a series of tracks. Preparing yet another track before the previously entered Next Selection command has been executed overrides your first setting, so that only the second Next Selection is carried out.If you stop playback by pressing the STOP■ button, the Next Selection function is cancelled.

■ Cancelling the Next Selection function

If you decide not to take advantage of the Next Selection function after all, proceed as follows:

  1. Press the NEXT SELECTION button. The disc and song numbers flash on the display.
  2. Press the CLEAR button.
  3. Press the NEXT SELECTION button again. The NEXT indicator goes dark and the function is cancelled.

Using the DVD Changer as CD player

Since your DV-C600 allows you to insert up to six discs in any combination (DVD video discs, Video CDs, audio CDs), there may be times when you only want to listen to music and avoid having to press the DISC SKIP or DISC+ and DISC- buttons several times to skip to the next audio CD. In that case, proceed as follows:

1ONKYO DV-C600 - Using the DVD Changer as CD player - 1Press the CD MODE button while the DV-C600 is stopped or playing back a CD.The RPT message appears on the display and the REPEAT indicator lights to signal that all audio CDs will be repeated in sequence.ONKYO DV-C600 - Using the DVD Changer as CD player - 2Track numberNote:The CD MODE button does not work while the DV-C600 is playing back a disc other than an audio CD. You first need to press the STOP button. Next, press the CD MODE button to enter CD Mode. The DVD Changer starts playing back the audio CD in the holder with the lowest number.
ONKYO DV-C600 - Using the DVD Changer as CD player - 3Press the CD MODE button again to cancel CD Mode. The RPT message disappears and the REPEAT indicator goes dark again to signal that the DVD Changer has returned to normal playback mode.

Note:

Another way of selecting only audio tracks is to take advantage of the DV-C600's Memory function. See "Programming Memory Sequences" on page 22 for details.

Your DV-C600 allows you to select the following audio-related settings. The number of options depends on the DVD video disc you are playing back. It is not possible to select an option for which there is no data on the DVD. Language: A DVD video disc may contain several language versions of a movie. Select the preferred language.

Recording system: Select the recording system that best matches the input capabilities of your amplifier or receiver. For example, there is little point in selecting "☐☐ 6CH" if your amplifier does not support Dolby Digital 5.1. Depending on the selected recording system, the DV-C600 automatically converts the audio data to an acceptable format for your amplifier.

The DV-C600 accepts the Dolby Digital, DTS, and PCM recording systems. Other systems cannot be played back. See also the conversion table below for details about the available options. Dolby Digital 5.1 Channel is displayed as “☐☐ 6CH.”

TV Shape

ONKYO DV-C600 - TV Shape - 1

This is where you can specify the shape of your TV screen. This is important for determining whether you would like to see the whole picture, or a slightly bigger version.

4:3 Letterbox:

Select this setting if you own a standard 4:3 TV set and want to see the whole picture. In that case, masking bars are inserted above and below the picture.

ONKYO DV-C600 - 4:3 Letterbox: - 1

4:3 Normal:

AUDIO Settings

Audio Out Select

ONKYO DV-C600 - Audio Out Select - 1

ONKYO DV-C600 - Audio Out Select - 2

ONKYO DV-C600 - Audio Out Select - 3

This function allows you to select the outputs and format for audio playback. Always select the setting that best matches your amplifier's capabilities and input connectors. The "Bitstream" and "PCM" options refer to the DV-C600's digital outputs. See also "Other Audio Playback Options" on page 12.

Bitstream: Select this option if your amplifier is equipped with a digital input (optical or coaxial) and a Dolby Digital, DTS, MPEG1, or MPEG2 decoder. The DV-C600 outputs digital audio information in the Bitstream format when you play back a DVD video disc with Dolby Digital, DTS, MPEG1, or MPEG2 encoding.

Analog2Ch: Select this option if the DV-C600 is connected to the audio inputs of your TV set, or an analog input pair of your external amplifier. Note that even this analog connection may allow you to take advantage of the amplifier's Dolby Pro Logic processor.

PCM: Select this option if the DV-C600 is connected to a digital input of your amplifier and if you would like the sound to be played back in stereo (e.g. for audio CDs). If you select "PCM", the audio data of DVD video discs with Dolby Digital, MPEG1, or MPEG2 encoding is automatically converted to 2-channel PCM, so that you lose the surround information. See also the table on page 29.

Dynamic Range Control

ONKYO DV-C600 - Dynamic Range Control - 1

Dynamic Range Control allows you to “compress” the dynamic range of a DVD’s sound track, so that you can lower the volume without losing extremely soft signals. This is especially useful when you are watching a movie late at night.

Off: The full dynamic range is maintained.

On: Low-level signals are slightly boosted so as to remain audible at a low volume setting.

Notes:

  • This function is only available during playback of Dolby Digital-encoded DVD video discs.
  • The degree of dynamic range reduction may differ depending on the DVD video disc.

Karaoke Vocal

ONKYO DV-C600 - Karaoke Vocal - 1

DVD Karaoke discs sometimes also contain a vocal track you probably don't need for Karaoke applications. That is why the DV-C600 allows you to switch the lead vocal off.

Off: The lead vocal track is muted.

On: If available on the selected DVD Karaoke disc, the lead vocal track is output.

Notes:

  • The Karaoke Vocal feature is only available during playback of Dolby Digital-encoded (multi-channel) DVD Karaoke discs.
  • For optimum Karaoke enjoyment, be sure to use appropriate audio equipment, such as an external amplifier.

Extended Audio Feature

ONKYO DV-C600 - Extended Audio Feature - 1

Some DVD video discs contain a special track that describes the on-screen actions for visually impaired persons. Your DV-C600 is set to automatically output this track if available. If this is not necessary, switch this function off.

Off: The Extended Audio Feature track is muted.

On: The Extended Audio Feature is active.

Some DVD video discs contain special subtitles, an enhancement of closed captioning for hearing-impaired persons. The DVD Changer automatically displays these special subtitles.

Off: The special subtitles are not displayed.

On: The special subtitles are displayed.

Screen Saver DVD

The screen saver function protects your TV screen from burn-in of images that are displayed for too long. If you also work with a computer, you probably know how it works. The screen saver is especially useful if you often use the Pause ("still") function and tend to forget to switch it off. See page 16.

Off: The screen saver will not blank out the screen after the delay time has elapsed.

On: The screen saver will come on whenever necessary.

OPERATION Settings

Pause/Still

ONKYO DV-C600 - Pause/Still - 1

This function allows you to obtain an even better quality for still pictures. Such pictures are displayed when you pause playback of a DVD video disc. See also page 16.

Auto: For normal use. The image quality should be sufficient for most applications.

Frame: Still pictures are clearer thanks to a higher resolution.

Parental Lock

ONKYO DV-C600 - Parental Lock - 1

DVD video discs equipped with the Parental Lock function allow you to decide what exactly can be viewed on your DV-C600, which is especially useful if you have children. For example: you could select a level where violent scenes unsuitable for children are skipped and replaced with more suitable scenes, or prevent playback of a disc altogether.

Whether the Parental Lock function actually works depends on the DVD video disc in question, because it needs to contain the software capable of responding to this function. Parental Lock is secured by means of a 4-digit code to avoid that your children bypass this function.

Ask your dealer or rental service for details about the Parental Lock support of a given DVD video disc. Also note that the meaning of the Parental Lock levels depends on the country whose rating standards are used by the DVD video disc.

Off: The Parental Lock feature is not active. To select the "Off" setting, perform steps 1 and 2 below.

On: Switching on Parental Lock involves specifying the highest level that can be viewed. You cannot just switch this function on without selecting a level. Careful: if you only carry out steps 1 and 2, Parental Lock will be switched off. Be sure to perform steps 1 – 4 below.

OPERATION Pause/Still Auto Off Parental Lock Off On Title Stop Off PBC On Security Code

It is now impossible to play back DVD video discs rated higher than the selected level. For example, when you select level 7 ("Viewable"), discs rated higher than level 7 are locked out ("Locked") and cannot be played back.

The Parental Lock level is equivalent to the following USA movie ratings:

Level 7: NC-17

Level 6: R

Level 4: PG 13

Level 3: PG

Level 1: G

The parental lock levels for “Canada” are included for future use. Since they are different from the US ratings, carefully check what they correspond to before buying new DVD video discs with the Canadian Parental Lock system as they become available.

■ Changing the Parental Lock level

Perform steps 2 - 4 above.

■ Changing the 4-digit Code

a) After selecting a level or "Off," press the STOP button four times, followed by the ENTER button.

Connections for System Remote Controller (R1)

If you own several RI-compatible ONKYO devices, be sure to connect their Racks to one another. This will allow you to use the remote controller of the main component (e.g. the amplifier) to control the entire system.

  1. To use this DVD Changer with an amplifier (or receiver), cassette tape deck, and tuner with the RI symbol, insert the remote controller cable plugs into the RI REMOTE CONTROLLER jacks.
  2. As the connection order of the R#is is unimportant, you could also connect one of the DV-C600's REMOTE CONTROLLER jacks to the tuner, the cassette tape deck, amplifier/receiver, or the compact disc player.
  3. When using the remote controller of an RI-equipped ONKYO amplifier (or receiver) to operate the entire bus, the remote controller must be pointed at the sensor of the amplifier (or receiver).

Notes:

  • The upper and lower REMOTE CONTROLLER jacks have the same function.
  • Remote controller operation is not possible when only the remote controller cable is connected — the audio jacks must also be connected.
  • One RI remote controller cable equipped with a 1/8" (3.5mm) diameter miniature two-conductor phone plug is included with the DV-C600 and with every ONKYO tuner, compact disc player or cassette tape deck with the R symbol.
