Frequently Asked Questions - Phantom II Pro ART

How do I connect the Phantom II Pro to my microphone and mixer?
Connect your microphone to the MICROPHONE INPUT female XLR on the front panel. Then connect a balanced XLR cable from the corresponding MICROPHONE OUTPUT male XLR on the rear panel to your mixer or audio interface. Repeat for a second microphone if needed. Turn on the unit using the front panel POWER button.
Can I use the Phantom II Pro with dynamic microphones?
Yes, you can use it with dynamic microphones, but it is not necessary because dynamic mics do not require phantom power. The unit will still pass the audio signal without damage, but the phantom power will be present on the pins. It is generally recommended to turn off phantom power when using dynamic mics to avoid any potential noise or wear.
What is the battery life of the Phantom II Pro?
With a standard 9V alkaline battery and both microphones connected (full load), the typical battery life is >10 hours. Under no load (no microphones), it can last significantly longer. For extended use, consider using an external power supply.
Can I power the Phantom II Pro with an external power supply?
Yes, you can use an external 7.5-12V AC/DC power supply with any polarity and a current capacity of at least 150 mA. Connect it to the EXTERNAL POWER jack on the unit. The unit is protected if both battery and external power are connected simultaneously.
Will the Phantom II Pro power two microphones at the same time?
Yes, the Phantom II Pro provides two independent channels of 48V phantom power. You can connect up to two condenser microphones simultaneously, each receiving clean, reliable phantom power.
The LED power light is not on. What should I check?
First, ensure the POWER button is pressed in. If using a battery, check that it is fresh and properly connected (snap the connector polarity correctly). If using an external supply, verify it is plugged in and delivering the correct voltage. Also, check that the battery compartment is fully closed and secure.
Can I use the Phantom II Pro with equipment that has its own phantom power?
It is not recommended to connect the Phantom II Pro to a device that already provides phantom power on the same line. Doing so can cause damage or noise. If you must use such a setup, ensure the other device's phantom power is turned off.
What type of cables should I use with the Phantom II Pro?
Use balanced XLR cables for both input and output connections. Balanced cables provide better noise rejection, especially over long distances. Standard male-to-female XLR cables work fine.
How should I clean and maintain the Phantom II Pro?
Keep the unit away from excessive dirt, dust, heat, and vibration. Avoid tobacco ash, drink spillage, and smoke. To clean, use a dry cloth. Do not open the unit as there are no user-serviceable parts inside. For storage, use adequate padding to protect controls.
What is the warranty on the Phantom II Pro?
ART provides a 3-year limited warranty (USA only) from the date of purchase to the original owner, covering defects in workmanship and materials. For service, visit www.artproaudio.com and request a Return Authorization (RA) number. Proof of purchase is required.

INTRODUCTION:

Thanks for purchasing Applied Research and Technology's PHANTOMIIPRO offering a superb level of sound quality. The PHANTOMIIPRO is designed to do one thing and do it well. It provides clean, reliable phantom power for one or two condenser microphones in a rugged, compact, and portable unit. Innovative low power circuitry generates the higher voltage necessary for powering microphones while maximizing battery life.

The PHANTOMIIPro installs inline between your microphone and a balanced line input on your gear. Balanced lines offer increased immunity to external electrical noise, such as hum. Since a balanced system minimizes induced noise, it is the preferred method of connecting audio gear, especially when long lengths of cable are used.

The PHANTOMIIPro is an invaluable tool in application areas including (but not limited to!): home or professional recording studios, live sound, PA, permanent installs, DJ, AV, podcasting and broadcasting. Use it with mixers, audio processors, digital audio workstations or anywhere you need phantom power for your mics.

FEATURES:

  • XLR connectors for balanced inputs and outputs
  • Low power, high efficiency CMOS circuitry for long battery life using a standard 9-Volt battery (Alkaline recommended)
  • Can be powered with an external power supply for operation from AC mains
  • Rugged extruded aluminum case with easily accessible battery compartment
    • LED lighted On/Off switch
  • Low noise, low distortion circuitry

INSTALLATION and OPERATION:

  1. Install a battery in the unit by unscrewing the knurled fastener to open the 9V BATTERY compartment and snapping the connector on to the battery. Alternatively, connect an external power supply to the EXTERNAL POWER jack. The PHANTOMIIPro is protected in case both sources of power are applied at the same time.
  2. Connect the cable from your microphone to the MICROPHONE INPUT 1 or 2 female XLR connector on the front panel.
  3. Connect another balanced line cable between the corresponding MICROPHONE OUTPUT 1 or 2 male XLR connector on the rear panel and the balanced inputs of your audio gear.
  4. Repeat for a second microphone if desired.
  5. Turn on the PHANTOMIIPro by pushing in the front panel POWER button. The button will light, indicating power is applied to the unit. When using a battery for power, be sure to turn the unit off when not using it in order to maximize battery life.
  6. If connecting the PHANTOMIIPro to another piece of equipment with its own phantom power, be sure to turn off the phantom power on that piece of equipment.
