Frequently Asked Questions - P-Touch 1760 BROTHER

How do I change the tape cassette?
Open the tape compartment cover, remove the old cassette by pulling straight up. If the ink ribbon is loose, wind the toothed wheel in the direction of the arrow until tight. Insert the new cassette firmly until the back touches the bottom of the compartment. Close the cover, then hold down Code and press Feed Space to advance the tape. Push the cutter lever to cut.
How do I clean the print head?
Turn off the machine and open the tape compartment. Remove the tape cassette. Use a dry cotton swab to gently wipe the print head up and down. For the rollers, rotate them while wiping. If dust remains, use a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol. Alternatively, use the optional cleaning cassette (TZ-CL4).
What batteries does the PT-1760 use?
It requires six AA batteries (AA/SUM-3/AM3/R6/LR6). Replace all six at the same time. Insert new batteries within five minutes of removing old ones to avoid losing text in memory (unless using AC adapter).
Can I use any AC adapter?
No, only use the AD-30 adapter designed exclusively for this machine. Using other adapters voids the warranty. Unplugging the adapter from the outlet before unplugging from the machine may erase stored text even if batteries are installed.
How do I print multiple copies automatically?
Use the Repeat Printing function: hold down Code and press Repeat S. The display shows 'REPEAT:1–9?'. Press a number key (1–9) for the number of copies, then press Print (or ) to start printing. Cut the tape after each chain of labels.

Why is there a blank horizontal line on my label?
A blank streak indicates a dirty print head. Clean the print head as described using a dry cotton swab or one dipped in isopropyl alcohol. If the problem persists, contact service.
How do I store and recall text?
To store: hold Code and press Store *8, then press a number key (1–9) for the file. To recall: hold Code and press Recall 9, then the file number, then . To delete: hold Code and press M.Del 0, then the file number, then . Maximum 9 files or 300 characters total.
The display is blank after power on. What should I do?
Check that the AC adapter is connected correctly or batteries are inserted with correct polarity. If using batteries, replace them with new ones. If the machine has 'locked up', turn it off, then hold down Code and R while pressing On Off to reset. Note: This erases all text and stored files.
How do I attach labels?
Use the enclosed stick (stored in the tape compartment cover). For laminated tape: pass the tape through the long hole in the stick, turn it three-quarters toward you, and pull to peel off the backing. For fabric tape: iron the label onto garment using a medium-high temperature (320–356°F / 160–180°C) for 10–15 seconds.

FABRIC TAPE

Fabric tape is used to attach a piece of fabric printed with your text onto garments using an iron. After printing the text onto fabric tape and cutting off the label using scissors, place the label on an ironed garment at the location where you wish to attach it in such a way that the printed text can be read correctly. Cover the label with another piece of cloth and use an iron set to a medium-high temperature (320 to 356 °F (160 to 180 °C)) to press down firmly for 10 to 15 seconds. For more details, refer to the instructions included with the fabric tape cassette.

Occasionally, specks of dust or dirt become attached to the machine's print head and rollers. This is particularly likely when you are using the unit outdoors or in a very dusty environment. If a section of the print head is covered with dust, a blank horizontal streak may appear through the label text. Therefore, as with a tape recorder, the machine's head may need to be cleaned from time to time.

To clean the print head and rollers:

① Turn off the machine.
② Open the tape compartment cover, then remove the tape cassette if one is installed. The print head and rollers are located in the tape compartment.

3 Print head: Use a dry cotton swab to gently wipe the print head with an up-and-down motion.

Rollers: Use a dry cotton swab to wipe each roller with an up-and-down motion while rotating them with your finger.

4 Install a tape cassette, close the tape compartment cover, and then try printing again.

⑤ If dust still remains, repeat steps ③ and ④ using a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol.

If none of the above works, contact your service representative.

MEMORY FUNCTIONS

You can use the memory to store your most frequently used text files. The text remains in the memory, even after all characters are removed from the display using the Clear function (holding down Code and pressing BS).

When each file is stored, it is given a number to make recalling it easier. Up to 9 text files or about 300 characters can be stored in the memory. Each stored text file can have a maximum of 60 characters.

Since a copy of the stored text file is recalled when the Recall function is used, the text can be edited or printed without changing the originally stored file. When a file is no longer needed or more space is necessary, the Memory delete function can be used to delete it.

When inserting new batteries, be sure to insert the new ones within five minutes of removing the old ones, otherwise any text files stored in the memory will be lost (unless the machine is plugged into an electrical outlet with the AC adapter).

STORING TEXT

To store a text file:

① Hold down Code and press Store *8. The message "STORE:1–9?" appears on the display.

If 300 characters have already been stored, the error message "MEMORY FULL!" appears in the display. If this occurs, an existing text file must be deleted before the new one can be stored.

2 Press the key ( Size to Recall ) of the file number where you wish to store the text. The text is stored under the selected file number and the text previously shown in the display reappears.

If a file is already stored under the selected file number, the message "OVERWRITE?" appears in the display and you must decide whether or not to overwrite it (delete it from the memory and store the new one).

To quit the Store function without storing the text, hold down Code and press *8 (or press just BS).

To overwrite the stored file with the new one:

- Press ← to delete the previously stored file and store the new one under the selected number.

To go back and choose another file number without overwriting the text file, press Clear BS, and then press the key of a different file number.

RECALLING TEXT

To recall a text file:

1 Hold down Code and press 9 . The message “RECALL:1–9?” appears on the display.

2 Press the key ( Size to Recall ) of the file number containing the text that you wish to recall. The text stored under the selected file number is shown.

To quit the Recall function without recalling text, hold down Code and press (or press just BS).

3 Press ←. Any text previously entered in the display is erased and the text stored under the selected file number is recalled into the display.

DELETING A FILE

To delete a text file:

1 Hold down Code and press 0. The message "M.DEL:1-9?" appears on the display.
2 Press the key (☐ to ☐) of the file number containing the text that you wish to delete. The text stored under the selected file number is shown.

To cancel the Memory delete function without deleting the text file, hold down Code and press Recall (or press just Clear BS).

3 Press ← to delete the text file that was selected.
