Frequently Asked Questions - UM435 UNIDEN

How to make a voice distress call with the Uniden UM435 radio?
Lift the red cover and press the DISTRESS button for automatic call. For a voice call, switch to channel 16 with the 16/9-TRI key, hold PUSH TO TALK, say 'MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY', give the ship's identity, position, nature of distress, number of people on board, and end with 'OVER'. Release the button and listen on channel 16. If no response after 30 seconds, repeat.
How to enter my MMSI number in the radio?
Access the menu by pressing CALL-MENU, then select Setup > User MMSI. Use CHANNEL UP/DOWN to enter the 9 digits, confirm each digit with ENT-1W/25W. Confirm the save. Caution: the user MMSI can only be entered once.
Can I receive weather alerts even in normal mode?
Yes, enable weather alert monitoring in the Setup > WX Alert Mode > ON menu. The radio will check the last used weather channel every 7 seconds and switch automatically if an alert is issued in your area.
How to use scan mode to monitor multiple channels?
First save channels to memory: tune to the channel, hold WX-MEM for 2 seconds. To start scanning, hold CLR-SCAN. The radio stops on channels where activity is detected. To resume, press CHANNEL UP or wait for the end of transmission.
What to do if the radio displays 'Input Position' or 'Check GPS'?
'Check GPS' indicates a faulty GPS connection. Check the wiring. 'Input Position' means no valid GPS data has been received in 4 hours. You can manually enter the position via the Setup > GPS Setup > Position Set menu. Make sure the position is correct for a distress call.
How to adjust the squelch level?
Turn the SQUELCH knob on the radio. Start fully counterclockwise, then slowly turn clockwise until background noise disappears. Do not set too high to avoid missing weak signals.
Can I use the radio without an antenna?
No, the antenna is essential for transmitting and receiving. Use a marine VHF antenna with PL-259 connector and 50 Ω impedance. Without an antenna, you risk damaging the transmitter.
How to make an individual DSC call?
Press CALL-MENU, select Individual, choose a contact from the directory or manually enter the MMSI. Select a response channel (e.g., channel 72), confirm with Send. The radio sends the call on channel 70, then automatically switches to the chosen channel if the other station accepts.
What is the maximum range of the radio?
In 25 W mode, typical range is about 30 to 50 km (20-30 nautical miles) between two elevated antennas. Actual range depends on antenna height, power, and weather conditions. In 1 W mode, range is reduced to a few kilometers.
How to put the radio in standby mode to not answer DSC calls?
Press CALL-MENU, select Standby. The radio will automatically reply 'unattended' to individual calls. To exit standby mode, press any key.
