1) Work area safety

a) Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.

2) Electrical safety

3) Personal safety

b) Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.

e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.

4) Power tool use and care
a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
e) Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool's operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
h) Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles and grasping surfaces do not allow for safe handling and control of the tool in unexpected situations.
5) Service
a) Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

Hot air/heat gun safety

A fire may result if the tool is not used with care, therefore;

- Never allow any air vents to become blocked, or allow vents to be obscured during use

- Obscured inlet or outlet vents will cause the tool to rapidly overheat.

- Parts of this tool will become extremely hot during use. Do not touch any part of the tool, other than the handle whilst in use.

- Always switch OFF, and allow to cool fully before handling, or attempting to change any fittings. Do not leave this tool unattended whilst switched ON or hot.

- Heat may be conducted to hidden areas, or materials near to the work area. Ensure that there are no flammable materials in the vicinity of the work area.

- Never aim the hot air/heat gun towards people, or animals.

- Be careful when using the tool in places where there are combustible materials

- Do not use in presence of an explosive atmosphere

- Be aware that heat may be conducted to combustible materials that are out of sight;

- Do not apply to the same place for a long time

- Do not hold the outlet nozzle against any material.

- Always keep the outlet nozzle at least 25mm away from the work surface. Do not allow any object to enter the nozzle when the tool is connected to the power supply.

- Do not allow paint, or any other waste, to accumulate on the outlet nozzle or scrapers. Residual heat may cause waste material to ignite, even after the tool has been switched OFF.

• When working on a vertical surface, always aim the heat gun downwards to prevent debris from falling into the machine.
• Use of the hot air/heat gun on certain materials may result in toxic fumes being emitted. Always allow adequate ventilation. Do not use in confined spaces.
• A good quality breathing mask, or respirator, should always be worn when using this tool.
• If working on pre-1960 paint finishes, there is an increased chance of encountering lead-based paint.
• Lead is especially toxic to children, pregnant women, or people with high blood pressure. If working on pre-1960 paint finishes such people should not be allowed near to the work area, even if provided with appropriate breathing protection.
• This tool should never be used in conjunction with chemical paint or varnish strippers. Use of heat guns with chemical strippers can produce extremely harmful fumes.
• Never use this tool near to any kind of fuel tank or gas cylinder.
  • Always dispose of waste material responsibly.

Intended Use

Hand-held electric hot air blower for domestic light to medium duty applications. Suitable for stripping of paint and other surface coatings, curing new paint or filler, shrinking heat-shrink tubing and shrink-wrap, pre-heating and drying applications, thawing frozen water pipes and other DIY applications.

Unpacking Your Tool

• Carefully unpack and inspect the heat gun. Fully familiarise yourself with all features and functions of the tool.
• If any parts are damaged or missing, have these parts repaired or replaced before use.

Before Use

Fitting accessories

Note: Always ensure that the heat gun is unplugged, and fully cooled before attempting to fit accessories.

• The Accessory Nozzles (4-7) supplied, allow the heat gun to be used for a variety of different tasks.
  • Accessories are a push fit onto the Outlet Nozzle (1).

Operation

• Always hold the tool by the handle provided.
- Do not obscure the inlet vents (2).
- Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment for the job that you are to do. Use of this tool requires ear defenders, safety goggles, gloves, and a breathing mask.

Switching ON & OFF

• The outlet has two pre-set temperatures. This can be adjusted by changing the position of the ON/OFF Switch (3).
• For the lower setting (350°C) move the Switch into the 'l' position.
• For the higher setting (550°C) move the Switch into the 'II' position.
• To switch the heat gun 'OFF' move the ON/OFF Switch to the '0' position.
• Be aware that the metal parts of the tool will remain hot for some time after switching 'OFF'. Allow at least 30mins for the gun to cool before leaving unattended.

Paint stripping

• Connect the tool to the mains supply, and switch 'ON'.
• Direct the hot air onto the paint to be removed, keeping the Outlet Nozzle (1) at least 25mm away from the surface.

Note: Take extra care when removing paint from window frames. The heat from this tool can cause damage to glass if used carelessly.

• Allow the paint to soften and remove using a suitable scraper.
• Do not overheat the paint. If you notice smoke or blackening, stop heating.
• Do not allow waste to build up or drop into the Outlet Nozzle as this will cause a fire hazard.

Removing varnish/paint from windows

• It is essential to use the Glass Protector Nozzle (4) when heating near windows to prevent breaking the glass.
• Varnish/ paint can be removed using an appropriate shaped spatula and brush.

Pipe defrosting

• This heat gun can be used to defrost frozen water pipes.
• Using the Reflector Nozzle (7), aim hot air at the frozen pipe. Move the heat gun along the pipe so that the whole length defrosts evenly.
• Be aware of overheating areas directly behind the pipe being defrosted.
• Do not attempt to defrost PVC pipe as the heat of the air may cause permanent damage

Drying

• This heat gun can be used to dry out damp wood or other materials.
• Be very careful when operating power tools near damp materials, the presence of water greatly increases the danger of electric shock.
• Always refer to the product manufacturer's instructions if using the heat gun to dry plaster, paint, or other finishes. Do not use the hot air gun/heat gun on any flammable material, or any material that may produce hazardous fumes

Stationary use

• This hot air gun can also be used statically, keeping hands free to manipulate the workpiece.
• The heat gun is designed to stand upright on a suitable workbench. The Outlet Nozzle (1) should point straight upwards. The nozzle must not contact the workbench or any other object.
• Ensure that the power cord is well supported, and will not become caught as you work.
• Switch the heat gun 'ON', and move the workpiece into the hot air flow. Take care to keep your hands and face away from the hot air.

General inspection

• Regularly check that all the fixing screws are tight
- Inspect the supply cord of the tool, prior to each use, for damage or wear. Repairs should be carried out by an authorised SILVERLINE service centre. This advice also applies to extension cords used with this tool

Cleaning

• Keep your tool clean. Always clean dust and particles away, and never allow ventilation holes to become blocked.
• Do not allow waste to collect on any part of the tool. Use a soft brush, or dry cloth to clean the machine, if available blow through the ventilation holes with clean, dry, compressed air
