System Requirements Before Installation for Canon Fax Equipment
A. Location
Install the machine on a suitable table, cabinet, or desk. Refer to the electronic manual for the device's dimensions and weight.
- You must use a single telephone line (touch-tone or rotary).
- Order an RJ11-C (USOC) telephone wall jack, which must be installed by any telephone company. If this RJ11-C wall jack is absent, no telephone/fax operation will be possible.
- Order a standard telephone line from your telephone company's sales representative. It must be a standard voice line or equivalent. Use one line per unit.
DDD (Direct Distance Dial) line
-0U-
IDDD (International Direct Distance Dial) line if you communicate abroad
NOTE
Canon recommends that you choose an individual line that complies with industry standards, namely 2500 (touch-tone) or 500 (rotary/pulse) sets. You can use a dedicated extension from a PBX (Private Branch Exchange) without the "Call Waiting" feature for the fax unit. Push-button telephone systems are not recommended because they send non-standard signals to each telephone for ringing and other special codes, which may cause a fax error.
C. Power Requirements
The machine must be connected only to a grounded 120-volt AC three-prong wall outlet.
Do not connect the machine to an outlet or power line shared with other devices that generate "electrical interference." Air conditioning systems, electric typewriters, photocopiers, and other such machines generate electrical noise that often interferes with communications equipment, as well as with sending and receiving documents.
Equipment Connection
This equipment complies with Part 68 of the FCC rules and with requirements adopted by ACTA. On the rear panel of this equipment is a label that contains, among other information, a product identifier in the format US:AAAEQ##TXXXX. If requested, provide this number to your telephone company.
The REN is used to determine the number of devices that may be connected to a telephone line. Excessive RENs on a telephone line may result in the devices not ringing in response to an incoming call. In most, but not all, areas, the sum of RENs should not exceed five (5).
To be certain of the number of devices that may be connected to a line, as determined by the total RENs, contact your local telephone company. For products approved after July 23, 2001, the REN for this product is part of the product identifier in the U.S. format: AAAEQ##TXXXX. The digits represented by ## are the REN without a decimal point (e.g., 03 indicates a REN of 0.3).
A FCC-compliant telephone cord and a modular plug are provided with this equipment. This equipment is designed to be connected to the telephone network or premises wiring using a compatible modular jack that is also compliant with Part 68.
This equipment cannot be used on telephone company-provided coin service. Connection to party line service is subject to state tariffs.
If Equipment Malfunctions
If a malfunction occurs that cannot be corrected using the procedures described in this manual or in the electronic manual, unplug the equipment from the telephone line and disconnect the power cord.
Do not reconnect the telephone line cord or turn the power switch back on until the problem has been fully resolved. Users should contact Canon authorized service and repair centers. For the addresses of these centers, contact Canon customer support (1-800-OK-CANON).
Rights of the Telephone Company
If this equipment (imageCLASS MF419dw/MF416dw/MF414dw) causes harm to the telephone network, the telephone company may disconnect the service. They also reserve the right to make changes to your installation or services that may affect the operation of this equipment. If such changes are necessary, the telephone company must notify the user in advance. However, if it is not possible to notify the user in advance, the telephone company must inform them as soon as possible. Additionally, the customer is advised of their rights to file a complaint with the FCC if they deem it necessary.
WARNING
The Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991 prohibits any person from using a computer or other electronic device, including fax machines, to send a message unless the message clearly contains, in the top or bottom margin of each transmitted page (or on the first page of each transmission), the date and time of sending, the identification of the business, organization, or person sending the message, and the telephone number of the fax machine, business, organization, or person originating the message. (The telephone number provided cannot be a 900 number or any other number for which charges exceed local or long-distance transmission charges.)
NOTE
To program this information into your fax machine, follow the procedure for registering your name, the unit's telephone number, the time, and the date in Getting Started.

Warning
The REN of this product is 1. - Before installing this equipment, the user must ensure that it is permitted to be connected to the facilities of the local telecommunications company. In addition, the equipment must be installed using an acceptable method of connection. In some cases, the company's inside wiring and individual service line may be extended by means of a certified connector (telephone cord extension). The customer should be aware that compliance with the above conditions does not prevent, in some cases, degradation of service. - Repairs to certified equipment must be carried out at a Canadian maintenance center designated by the supplier. Any repair or modification of this equipment by the user, or any malfunction of the equipment, may cause the telephone company to request disconnection of this equipment. - For your own protection, ensure that the electrical grounds of the power circuit, telephone lines, and metal pipes in the premises are connected. This precaution is particularly important in rural areas.
CAUTION
The user should not attempt to make these connections themselves. Contact a qualified electrician or your electric company.

- A single telephone line (touch-tone or rotary) must be used.
- Order an RJ11-C (USOC) wall telephone jack, which must be installed by the telephone company. If you do not have an RJ11-C wall jack, use of the telephone/fax will be impossible.
- Request a normal commercial line from your telephone company representative. The line should be a normal voice line or equivalent. Use one line per unit.
DDD line (Direct Distance Dial)
IDDD line (International Direct Distance Dial) if communicating with foreign countries
NOTE
Canon recommends an individual line in accordance with industry regulations, i.e., 2,500 telephones (tone) or 500 (rotary/pulse dialing). An extension from a PBX (Private Branch Exchange) unit without "Call Waiting" may be used with your fax unit. Key telephone systems are not recommended, as they send non-standard signals to individual telephones for ringing and special tones, which could cause a fax error.
C. Power requirements
The equipment must be connected only to a standard 120-volt AC, three-wire grounded outlet.
Do not connect the equipment to an outlet or power line shared with other appliances that cause "electrical noise." Air conditioners, electric typewriters, copiers, and other machines of this type generate electrical noise that can interfere with communications equipment that sends and receives documents.
Connecting the equipment
This equipment complies with Part 68 of the FCC rules and the requirements adopted by ACTA. On the rear panel of this equipment is a label that contains, among other information, a product identifier in the format US:AAAEQ#TXXXX. If requested, you must provide this number to the telephone company.
The REN (Ringer Equivalence Number) is used to determine the number of devices that may be connected to a telephone line. An excessive number of RENs on a telephone line may result in devices not ringing in response to an incoming call. In most areas, but not all, the total RENs should not exceed five (5.0).
To be certain of the number of devices that may be connected to a telephone line, as determined by the total RENs, contact your local telephone company. For products approved after July 23, 2001, the REN for this product is part of the product identifier with the format US:AAAEQ##TXXXX. The digits represented by ## are the REN without the decimal point (e.g., 03 is the REN of 0.3).
This equipment is supplied with a telephone line cord and a modular connector in compliance with the FCC. This equipment is designed to be connected to the telephone network or the telephone installation wiring using a modular connector that complies with Part 68.
This equipment cannot be used on party lines provided by the telephone company. Connection to special numbers (party lines) is subject to applicable tariffs.
In case of equipment malfunction
If a malfunction occurs that cannot be corrected by the procedures described in this guide or in the e-Manual, disconnect the equipment from the telephone line and unplug the power cord.
The telephone line cord should not be reconnected, nor should the power switch be turned on, until the problem has been completely resolved. Users should contact authorized Canon service centers for repair of the equipment. Information regarding the locations of authorized service centers can be obtained by calling the Canon Customer Assistance Center (1-800-OK-CANON).
Rights of the telephone company
If this equipment (imageCLASS MF419dw/MF416dw/MF414dw) causes harm to the telephone network, the telephone company may temporarily discontinue service. The telephone company also reserves the right to make changes in facilities and services that may affect the configuration of this equipment. When such changes are necessary, the telephone company must provide adequate prior notice to the user.
However, if such prior notice is not possible, the telephone company will notify the customer as soon as possible. Likewise, the customer will be notified of their right to file a complaint with the FCC if they deem it necessary.
WARNING
The Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991 makes it unlawful for any person to use a computer or other electronic device, including fax machines, to send any message unless such message clearly contains, in a margin at the top or bottom of each transmitted page or on the first page of the transmission, the date and time of transmission and an identification of the business, other entity, or individual sending the message, as well as the telephone number of the sending machine or such business, other entity, or individual. (The telephone number provided may not be a 900 number or any other number for which charges exceed local or long-distance transmission rates.)
NOTE
To program this information into your equipment, you must follow the procedure for registering your name, the unit's telephone number, and the time and date of transmission.
