Frequently Asked Questions - SA3400 SYNOLOGY

How to install a hard drive in the SA3400?
Open the tray by pressing the small button on the left side of the handle. Place the drive (3.5" or 2.5") in the tray and secure it with the provided screws. Insert the tray into the bay, push the handle to lock, then push the switch to the left to secure.
How to install additional memory modules?
Turn off the SA3400, unplug cables, remove the screw and the rear top cover. Insert the module into the slot aligning the notch, push firmly until the clips close. Replace the cover and screw. Check the memory in Control Panel > Info Center.
How to replace a defective fan?
Press the side buttons to remove the fan cover. Fans are numbered 1 to 4. Lift the faulty fan, slide the new one into place ensuring proper alignment. Re-screw the cover.
How to connect an RX1217sas expansion unit?
Connect a SAS cable from the SAS OUT port of the SA3400 to the SAS IN port of the expansion unit. Plug in the power cords. The unit powers on automatically. Do not unplug the cable when the system is powered on.
What to do if the status LED flashes orange?
An orange flashing STATUS LED indicates a degraded or failed volume. Check DSM to identify the issue and replace any failed drive. If the ALERT LED flashes orange, it may be a fan failure or overheating.
How to reset the SA3400 to factory settings?
Press the RESET button on the back until you hear a beep to restore the IP and admin password. For a full DSM reinstallation, hold the button until three beeps.
What RAID types are supported?
The SA3400 supports Basic, JBOD, RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, and Synology RAID F1. Use the volume creation tool in DSM to configure the desired RAID.
How to install DSM on the SA3400?
Make sure the NAS is turned on and connected to the network. Open a browser on a computer on the same network and go to find.synology.com or synologynas:5000. Web Assistant will search for the NAS; click Connect and follow the instructions.
Can I use drives of different sizes?
Yes, but it is recommended to use drives of the same size to optimize capacity utilization in RAID volumes. If you mix sizes, capacity will be limited by the smallest drive.
How to replace a faulty power supply?
Unplug the power cord from the unit to be replaced. Push the power supply lever, remove it, then insert the new unit until it clicks. Reconnect the cord. Use genuine Synology power supplies.

Safety Instructions - Rack Mount

A) Elevated Operating Ambient -

If installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly, the operating ambient temperature of the rack environment may be greater than room ambient. Therefore, consideration should be given to installing the equipment in an environment compatible with the maximum ambient temperature (Tma) specified by the manufacturer.

B) Reduced Air Flow –

Installation of the equipment in a rack should be such that the amount of air flow required for safe operation of the equipment is not compromised.

C) Mechanical Loading –

Mounting of the equipment in the rack should be such that a hazardous condition is not achieved due to uneven mechanical loading.

Consideration should be given to the connection of the equipment to the supply circuit and the effect that overloading of the circuits might have on overcurrent protection and supply wiring. Appropriate consideration of equipment nameplate ratings should be used when addressing this concern.

E) Reliable Earthing –

Reliable earthing of rack-mounted equipment should be maintained. Particular attention should be given to supply connections other than direct connections to the branch circuit (e.g. use of power strips).
