Frequently Asked Questions - XL6050 BROTHER

How to thread the upper thread on the Brother XL6050?
Raise the presser foot and needle to the highest position. Place a spool on the spool pin with a spool cap of appropriate size. Follow the path indicated by numbers on the machine: pass the thread through the guides, then through the take-up lever from right to left, then through the guide above the needle, finally thread the needle from front to back. Leave about 5 cm of thread.
How to wind the bobbin?
Place the thread on the spool pin, pass it through the bobbin winder guide. Push the bobbin onto the bobbin winder shaft, push the bobbin winder to the right until it clicks. Hold the thread end and gently press the foot pedal to start winding. The machine stops automatically when the bobbin is full. Push the bobbin winder to the left to remove the bobbin.
How to change the needle?
Turn off the machine and unplug it. Raise the needle by turning the handwheel toward you. Lower the presser foot. Loosen the needle clamp screw with a screwdriver and remove the needle. Insert a new needle with the flat side toward the back, pushing it up as far as it will go. Tighten the screw. Check that the needle does not touch the presser foot by turning the handwheel manually.
How to adjust the thread tension?
The upper thread tension is adjusted with the dial on the top of the machine. For correct tension, both threads should interlock in the middle of the fabric. If loops appear on the top, reduce tension (lower number). If loops appear on the bottom, increase tension (higher number). Always test on a scrap of fabric.
How to sew an automatic 1-step buttonhole?
Mark the button position. Attach the buttonhole foot. Place a button in the button plate to determine size. Lower the presser foot lever. Turn the stitch selector to the buttonhole symbol. Lower the buttonhole lever fully to the back. Hold the threads and gently press the foot pedal. The machine automatically sews the four steps (front, left side, back, right side) then stops.
How to sew a button?
Set the stitch selector to a zigzag stitch with width matching the hole spacing (e.g., 3.5 mm). Set stitch length to 0. Place the button under the zigzag foot aligning the holes with the needle. Lower the foot and sew slowly about 10 stitches, turning the handwheel manually to ensure the needle does not hit the button. Cut the threads and tie the ends on the wrong side.
How to use the zipper foot?
Replace the standard foot with the zipper foot. Select straight stitch with length 2-3. To sew the left side of the zipper, attach the foot so that the needle goes through the right notch. For the right side, reverse. Turn the handwheel by hand to check that the needle does not touch the foot before sewing.
What to do if the needle breaks?
Turn off and unplug the machine. Remove needle fragments. Check that you are using a straight needle suitable for the fabric (see combination table). Ensure the needle is correctly inserted (flat side to the back) and tightly secured. Avoid pulling the fabric while sewing and do not use bent needles. If the problem persists, consult the troubleshooting guide.
How to clean the Brother XL6050 sewing machine?
Unplug the machine. Remove the needle and presser foot. Remove the needle plate with a screwdriver. Turn the handwheel to align the feed dog notch. Remove the shuttle hook and clean lint with the provided brush. Do not use oil on the hook or feed dogs. Reassemble in reverse order: feed dogs, needle plate, presser foot, needle.
What types of thread and needle to use for denim?
For heavy fabric like denim, use a needle size 90/14 to 100/16 and cotton or synthetic thread weight 30 to 50. Avoid needles that are too fine (65/9) which may break. Set upper thread tension around 4-5 and stitch length between 3 and 4 mm. Test on a scrap.

ACHTUNG

"BEWAAR DEZE INSTRUCTIES"

If this machine is fitted with a 3 pin non-rewireable BS plug then please read the following.

IMPORTANT (in the United Kingdom)

Main supply (AC 230/240V\~, 50Hz)

DO NOT cut off the main plug from equipment. If the plug fitted is not suitable for the power point in your home or the cable is too short to reach a power point, then obtain an appropriate safety approved extension lead or consult your dealer.

BE SURE to replace the fuse only with an identical approved type, as originally fitted and to replace the fuse cover.

If none the less the main plug is cut off be sure to remove the fuse and dispose of the plug immediately, to avoid a possible shock hazard by inadvertent connection to the main supply.

IMPORTANT (in the other countries)

If the available socket outlet is not suitable for the plug supplied with this equipment, it should be cut off and an appropriate three pin plug fitted. With alternative plugs an approved fuse must be fitted in the plug.

NOTE: The plug severed from the main leads must be destroyed as a plug with bared flexible cords is hazardous if engaged in a live socket outlet. In the event of replacing the plug fuse, use a fuse approved by ASTA to BS 1362, i.e. carrying the mark, rating as marked on plug.

Always replace the fuse cover. Never use plugs with the fuse cover omitted.

WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT EITHER WIRE TO THE EARTH TERMINAL WHICH IS MARKED WITH THE LETTER 'E', BY THE EARTH SYMBOL OR COLOURED GREEN OR YELLOW.

The wires in this main lead are coloured in accordance with the following code:

Blue Neutral

Brown Live

As the colours of the wiring in the main lead of this appliance may not correspond with the coloured markings identifying the terminals in your plug, proceed as follows:

The wire which is coloured blue must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter 'N' or coloured black or blue.

The wire which is coloured brown must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter 'L' or coloured red or brown.

Connecting Plugs and Main Power / Sewing Light Switch
