How to connect the My Passport Ultra hard drive?

Connect the USB cable to the hard drive and your computer. The hard drive turns on automatically. If the New Hardware Detected wizard appears, close it. The drive is ready to be used as a storage device.

How to install the included WD software?

Double-click on the WD Apps installation file that appears in File Explorer. Follow the wizard to install WD Drive Utilities, WD Security, and WD SmartWare. You can choose which applications to install.

How to set up automatic backup?

Open WD SmartWare. On the Home tab, select the source (your computer) and the target (the My Passport drive). Click on the Backup tab, choose the mode (by category or by file), and click Enable Backup. You can also schedule backups.

How to password protect my hard drive?

Launch WD Security from the Start menu or desktop. Enter a password (max 25 characters), confirm it, add a hint, then check the auto-unlock box if desired. Click Save Security Settings. Note: if you forget the password, the data will be unrecoverable.

What to do if I forgot my password?

If you checked Enable auto unlock when creating the password, the drive unlocks automatically on this computer. Otherwise, you cannot recover the data. You will need to use WD Drive Unlock to erase the drive and reuse it. Contact WD support for further assistance.

My Mac does not recognize the hard drive, what to do?

The drive is formatted as NTFS for Windows. To use it on Mac, you must reformat it. Open Disk Utility, select the My Passport drive, then erase it by choosing a Mac-compatible format (such as Mac OS Extended or exFAT). Note: this erases all data.

How to recover backed up files?

Open WD SmartWare. In the Recovery tab, select the backed up volume, choose the destination (original location or special folder), then select the files to recover. Click Start Recovery.

Can I use the hard drive with a cloud service?

Yes, WD SmartWare Pro allows backing up to a Dropbox account. In the Settings tab, click Dropbox Account and follow the instructions to connect your account. You can then select Dropbox as a backup source or target.

How to set the hard drive sleep timer?

Open WD Drive Utilities. Click Sleep Timer and choose the idle time before sleep (e.g., 10, 15, 30 minutes or never). Confirm the setting.

What is the warranty period and how to activate it?

The limited warranty is 3 years from the date of purchase. To activate the warranty and receive updates, register your product at register.wdc.com or via WD Drive Utilities.
