Frequently Asked Questions - DWA-F03D SONY

How do I connect the DWA-F03D to my camera?
Connect the transmitter to your microphone and the receiver to your camera's XLR input. Ensure both units are powered on and set to the same channel. The audio signal is transmitted digitally with low latency.
What is the transmission range of the DWA-F03D?
The DWA-F03D offers a transmission range of approximately 100 meters in line-of-sight conditions. Walls and obstacles can reduce this range, so position the antenna for optimal performance.
How long does the battery last?
Using two AA alkaline batteries, the device operates for up to 6 hours. Rechargeable batteries may have a shorter life; consider using a DC power source for extended sessions.
Can I use the DWA-F03D with a smartphone?
The DWA-F03D is designed for professional cameras and recorders with XLR inputs. To connect to a smartphone, you would need an adapter and an audio interface, but it is not directly supported.
Does the DWA-F03D support phantom power?
Yes, the XLR input provides +48V phantom power for condenser microphones. The transmitter supplies power to the microphone, so no extra battery is needed for the mic.
How do I reduce latency?
The device has a built-in low latency of about 0.5 ms. To minimize latency further, keep the transmitter and receiver close together and avoid interference from other wireless devices.
Can I use multiple DWA-F03D units simultaneously?
Yes, multiple transmitters can operate on different channels to avoid interference. The DWA-F03D offers several selectable channels for multi-microphone setups.
How do I troubleshoot wireless dropouts?
First, check the battery level on both units. Then move the transmitter and receiver closer and ensure there are no metal barriers. Change the channel if the current one has interference from Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
Is the DWA-F03D weatherproof?
The DWA-F03D is designed for professional outdoor use but is not fully waterproof. It can withstand light rain if protected by the included weather-resistant carrying case. Avoid submersion.
How do I clean and maintain the device?
Use a soft dry cloth to wipe the exterior. Clean the XLR connectors regularly with a contact cleaner. Store the device in a cool, dry place and remove batteries if not in use for a long time.

Overview

The DWA-F03D is an adapter that attaches to an optional DWR-S03D Digital Wireless Receiver that allows the DWR-S03D to be used as a portable wireless receiver.

High quality and reliable audio transmission

Outputs the high-quality audio of the DWX series as two analog channels.

The outputs use high-reliability connectors to provide stable audio transmission.

Dual power supplies

Two types of external power supply (DC IN connector and USB connector) are supported, which can be freely selected depending on the user's workflow.

Compact, lightweight design

The total mass when combined with the DWR-S03D is just 245 g (8.64 oz), making it ideal for mixer bag audio recording for live broadcast coverage and production sites.

② UB Type-C® connector

Connect to a mobile battery pack to supply power to the unit.

Note

The input voltage rating is 5 V. If the voltage exceeds 5 V, it may cause a failure.

USB Type-C® and USB-C® are registered trademarks of USB Implementers Forum.

③ USB cable clamp M2 screw hole

The M2 screw hole is used to prevent removal of the USB cable.

It supports a USB single screw (center) lock type cable.

④ DCN connector (4-pin)

Connect to a portable battery to supply power to the unit. This connector accepts a voltage between 10 V DC and 17 V DC.

Note

Depending on the portable battery used, the unit may turn off and then restart when the power is switched.

Use to secure the attached wireless receiver to the unit.

Attachment and Connection

Attaching the Receiver

Insert the DWR-S03D into the wireless receiver slot of the unit.

1 Attach the unit and DWR-S03D as shown in the following diagram.

Technical line drawing of an electronic device with two vertical wires and a base case, showing internal components and rotation arrows (no text or symbols)

2 Fasten the two M2 mounting screws of the wireless receiver using a screwdriver.

Use a Phillips #1 screwdriver.

Notes

- Check that the two screws are tightened securely (recommended tightening torque: 0.25 N·m). If the screws are loose, any vibration or impact may cause a malfunction.

- After attaching the unit and DWR-S03D, refrain from attaching/detaching them except in the event of a malfunction or maintenance, as they are not intended to be attached and detached frequently.

  • Check that there are no foreign objects in the wireless receiver slot before connecting. Foreign objects may cause damage, failure, or a malfunction.
  • Do not touch the connector directly with your hands. Applying strong force to the connector may cause a poor connection or damage.

Connecting power

Connect a portable battery to the DC IN connector and/or a mobile battery pack to the USB connector of the unit using the appropriate cables.

Power supply cables are sold separately.

Connecting the audio cables

Connect the OUTPUT1 or OUTPUT2 connector of the unit to the AUDIO IN connector of a mixer recorder using the supplied audio cable.

Note

To prevent foreign objects from entering the DC IN connector or USB connector, use caps on the unused connectors.

Troubleshooting

Check the following items before submitting the unit for repairs. If the problem persists, consult your Sony dealer.

Symptom Cause Remedy
The DWR-S03D does not turn on. The DWR-S03D is not correctly attached to the unit.Attach it until it is firmly inserted, and then secure in position using the adapter mounting screws.
No audio is output from the OUTPUT2 connector. The tuner 2 of the DWR-S03D is not turned on.Turn on tuner 2 so that tuner 2 audio is output from the OUTPUT2 connector.
Cannot update the DWR-S03D using USB connection. The DWR-S03D cannot be updated using the USB connector of the unit.Use the USB connector on the side of the DWR-S03D.

Note

The unit does not support the ANALOG OUTPUT1 function of the DWR-S03D.

Important Notes on Operation

Use and Storage

  • The unit must be used within a temperature range of 0°C to 50°C (32°F to 122°F).
  • When using the DWR-S03D in a mixer bag, for example, heat may accumulate and the surface of the DWR-S03D may become hot. Exercise caution when touching the unit.
  • Operating the unit near electrical equipment (motors, transformers, or dimmers) may cause it to be affected by electromagnetic induction. Keep the unit as far from such equipment as possible.

Cleaning

  • If the adapter is used in a very humid or dusty place or in a place subject to an active gas, clean its surface as well as the connectors with a dry, soft cloth soon after use. Lengthy use of the unit in such places or not cleaning it after its use in such places may shorten its life.
  • Clean the surface and the connectors of the unit with a dry, soft cloth. Never use thinner, benzene, alcohol or any other chemicals, since these may damage the finish.
