How do I record in 4K?

Set the recording mode to 4K (3840×2160) using the menu or the dedicated button on the side of the camcorder.

What memory cards are compatible?

Use SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards with Class 4 or higher speed rating. For 4K recording, Class 10 or UHS-I is recommended.

How long does the battery last?

With the supplied NP-FV70 battery, recording time is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes in 4K, and up to 3 hours in HD.

Can I playback videos directly on the camcorder?

Yes, press the Playback button and select the desired video on the touch screen.

How do I connect to a TV?

Use the built-in HDMI micro connector and an HDMI cable (sold separately) to connect to an HDTV.

Does it have image stabilization?

Yes, it features Balanced Optical SteadyShot for smooth footage even when walking.

How do I transfer videos to a computer?

Connect the camcorder to your computer via USB cable and use the built-in PlayMemories Home software (Windows) or import directly.

Can I use an external microphone?

What is the zoom range?

How do I reset the camcorder?

If the battery pack is mishandled, the battery pack can burst, cause a fire or even chemical burns. Observe the following cautions.

• Do not disassemble.
• Do not crush and do not expose the battery pack to any shock or force such as hammering, dropping or stepping on it.
• Do not short circuit and do not allow metal objects to come into contact with the battery terminals.
• Do not expose to high temperature above 60°C (140°F) such as in direct sunlight or in a car parked in the sun.
• Do not incinerate or dispose of in fire.
• Do not handle damaged or leaking lithium ion batteries.
• Be sure to charge the battery pack using a genuine Sony battery charger or a device that can charge the battery pack.
• Keep the battery pack out of the reach of small children.
• Keep the battery pack dry.
• Replace only with the same or equivalent type recommended by Sony.
• Dispose of used battery packs promptly as described in the instructions.

I AC Adaptor

Do not use the AC Adaptor placed in a narrow space, such as between a wall and furniture.

Use the nearby wall outlet (wall socket) when using the AC Adaptor. Disconnect the AC Adaptor from the wall outlet (wall socket) immediately if any malfunction occurs while using the apparatus.

I Note on the power cord (mains lead)

The power cord (mains lead) is designed specifically for use with this camcorder only, and should not be used with other electrical equipment.

Even if your camcorder is turned off, AC power source (mains) is still supplied to it while connected to the wall outlet (wall socket) via the AC Adaptor.

Excessive sound pressure from earphones and headphones can cause hearing loss.

Selecting the recording format for movies

The camcorder is compatible with the XAVC S format.

What is XAVC S?

XAVC S is a recording format that allows high-resolution images, such as 4K, to be highly compressed with MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 and recorded in the MP4 file format. High image quality will be obtained while keeping the data size within a certain level.

- You can store images by connecting to a recorder with an analog AV cable (sold separately). Movies are copied with standard definition image quality.
- You can directly copy images to an external media device with the VMC-UAM2 USB Adaptor Cable (sold separately).

To transfer images to a smartphone

You can transfer MP4 images to a smartphone connected to the camcorder via Wi-Fi (page 36). MP4 format is good for uploading to the Internet. When [Dual Video REC] is set to [On], the camcorder records movies in XAVC S 4K format, XAVC S HD format, or AVCHD format while recording movies in MP4 format at the same time.

Charging the battery pack

1 Turn off your camcorder by closing the LCD monitor, retract the viewfinder*, and attach the battery pack.

* Models with the viewfinder (FDR-AX33/AXP33/AXP35) only

2 Connect the AC Adaptor and the power cord (mains lead) to your camcorder and the wall outlet (wall socket).

* Align the ▲ mark on the DC plug with that on the DC IN jack.
• The POWER/CHG (charge) lamp turns orange.
- The POWER/CHG (charge) lamp turns off when the battery pack is fully charged. Disconnect the AC Adaptor from the DC IN jack of the camcorder.

Charging the battery using your computer

Turn off your camcorder and connect the camcorder to a running computer using the Built-in USB Cable (page 52).

- Change the setting of your computer so that it would not enter the sleep (hibernation) state before charging your camcorder.

To use your camcorder connected to the wall outlet (wall socket)

Connect the camcorder to the wall outlet (wall socket) in the same way as "Charging the battery pack."

To remove the battery pack

Turn off your camcorder. Slide the BATT (battery) release lever (①) and remove the battery pack (②).

To charge the battery pack abroad

You can charge the battery pack in any countries/regions using the AC Adaptor supplied with your camcorder within the AC 100 V - 240 V, 50 Hz/60 Hz range.

- Do not use an electronic voltage transformer.

Turning the power on

1 Open the LCD monitor of your camcorder and turn the power on.

- You can also turn on the camcorder by pulling out the viewfinder (models with the viewfinder (FDR-AX33/AXP33/AXP35) only).

2 Following the instructions on the LCD monitor, select the language, the geographical area, Daylight Savings or Summer Time, date format, and the date and time.

- To go to the next page, touch [Next].

- To turn off the power, close the LCD monitor. If the viewfinder is pulled out, retract it (models with the viewfinder (FDR-AX33/AXP33/AXP35) only).

- To set the date and time again, select MENU → [Setup] → [Clock Settings] → [Date & Time Setting]. (In case you haven't used your camcorder for several months)

- To turn off the operating sound, select MENU → [Setup] → [General Settings] → [Beep] → [Off].

Inserting a memory card

1 Open the cover, and insert the memory card until it clicks.

Insert the card with the notched corner in the direction as illustrated.

- The [Preparing image database file. Please wait.] screen appears if you insert a new memory card. Wait until the screen disappears.

• To select a memory card as the recording medium, select MENU → [Setup] → [Media Settings] → [Media Select] → [Memory Card] (FDR-AX30/AXP35).
• To eject the memory card, open the cover and lightly push the memory card in once.

To format the recording media

• To ensure stable operation of the memory card, it is recommended to format the memory card with your camcorder before the first use.
• To format the memory card, select MENU → [Setup] → [Media Settings] → [Format] → desired recording medium → OK.
• Formatting the memory card will erase all the data stored on it and the data will be irrecoverable. Save your important data on your PC, etc.

Notes

- Movies recorded on Memory Stick XC-HG Duo media or SDXC memory cards cannot be imported to or played back on computers or AV devices not supporting the exFAT* file system by connecting the camcorder to these devices with the USB cable. Confirm in advance that the connecting equipment is supporting the exFAT system. If you connect equipment not supporting the exFAT system and the format screen appears, do not perform the format. All the data recorded will be lost.

* The exFAT is a file system that is used for Memory Stick XC-HG Duo media and SDXC memory cards.

Recording

Recording movies

1 Open the LCD monitor, and press START/STOP to start recording.

• To stop recording, press START/STOP again.
- Items on the LCD monitor disappear if you do not operate the camcorder for a few seconds. To display items again, touch anywhere except the buttons on the LCD monitor.

Notes

- While recording movies in the XAVC S 4K 100Mbps or XAVC S 4K 60Mbps format, video signals (HDMI output signal/AV cable output signal) are not output to external media.

To record MP4 movies simultaneously (Dual Video REC)

When [Dual Video REC] is set to [On], the camcorder records movies in MP4 format while recording movies in XAVC S 4K format, XAVC S HD format, or AVCHD format at the same time.

Select MENU → [Image Quality/Size] → [Dual Video REC] → desired setting.

- MP4 format is easy for playing back your movies on a smartphone, for uploading to a network, or for uploading to the Web.

Recording photos during movie recording (Dual Capture)

You can record photos during movie recording by pressing PHOTO.

Notes

• You may not be able to shoot photos depending on the setting in [RE C Mode] and [ Frame Rate].
• You cannot specify the storage destination (internal memory/memory card) of photos and movies separately (FDR-AX30/AXP35).

To suppresses the voice of the person recording the movie (My Voice Canceling)

Press My Voice Canceling) (page 51). The voice of the person recording the movie will be suppressed.

- When the focus is adjusted properly, AE/AF lock indicator appears on the LCD monitor.

Using the manual adjustment features

Assigning a menu item to the MANUAL ring

1 Press and hold MANUAL button (page 51) for a few seconds.

- The menu items you can control with the MANUAL ring will appear on the [Manual Ring Setting] screen.

2 Rotate the MANUAL ring (page 51) to select the item to be assigned, and then press MANUAL button.

Making the manual adjustment using the MANUAL ring

① Press the MANUAL button to switch to manual adjustment mode.
② Rotate the MANUAL ring to make the adjustment.

- To return to automatic adjustment mode, press MANUAL button again.

- When Zoom function is assigned, make the adjustment by only rotating the MANUAL ring.

1 Open the LCD monitor and press the (View Images) button on the camcorder to enter the playback mode.

• The Event View screen appears after some seconds.

2 Select ↕ to move the desired event to the center, and then select the part circled (①) in the figure.

Connect the camcorder to an access point with a security setting (page 39). Press View Images) on the camcorder, and then select MENU → [Wireless] → [Function] → [View on TV] → image type to be played back.

- You can view AVCHD movies, MP4 movies, and photos only.

Playing back trimmed movies (Trimming Playback) recorded in XAVC S 4K format

You can play back the movies recorded in XAVC S 4K file format while magnifying and trimming the part you want to watch, and also while zooming the scene up to the full high definition image quality.

1 Change the HDMI output setting to output 4K movies.

Select MENU → [Setup] → [↔ Connection] → [HDMI

2 Connect the HDMI OUT jack of the camcorder to the HDMI IN jack of a TV using the HDMI cable supplied.

Viewing images using the built-in projector (FDR-AXP33/AXP35)

1 Press the PROJECTOR button (page 51).
2 Select [Image Shot on This Device].
3 Follow the operating guide on the LCD monitor, and then select [Project].

Using the built-in projector with a computer/smartphone

Transferring MP4 movies and photos to your smartphone

One-touch connection with an Android supporting NFC

1 On the smartphone, select [Settings], then, select [More...] to check that [NFC] is enabled.

2 On the camcorder, play back an image to be sent to the smartphone.

• You can transfer MP4 movies and photos only.
• To select MP4 movies when you play back movies, see "Switching to MP4" (page 27).

3 Touch the camcorder to the smartphone.

Notes

• Cancel the sleep mode or unlock the screen on the smartphone beforehand.
• Make sure that 📄 displayed on the LCD monitor of the camcorder and the smartphone.
• Continue touching the camcorder to the smartphone without moving until PlayMemories Mobile starts (1 to 2 seconds).
• If the camcorder cannot be connected with the smartphone by NFC, see "Connection without using NFC" (page 37).

1 Press the View Images) button, then select MENU → [Wireless] → [Function] → [Send to Smartphone] → [Select on This Device] → image type.

2 Select the image you want to transfer, and add √ and then select -OK OK.

- The SSID and a password are displayed, and the camcorder is ready to be connected with the smartphone.

3 Connect the camcorder to the smartphone, and transfer images.

Android

①Start up PlayMemories Mobile and select the SSID of the camcorder.
②Input the password displayed on the camcorder (first time only).

iPhone/iPad

① Select [Settings] → [Wi-Fi] → the SSID displayed on the camcorder.
②Input the password displayed on the camcorder (first time only).
③Confirm that the SSID displayed on the camcorder is selected.

④Return to Home, and start up PlayMemories Mobile.

Using your smartphone as a wireless remote commander

You can record with the camcorder using your smartphone as a wireless remote commander.

1 On your camcorder, select MENU → [Wireless] → [Function] → [Ctrl with Smartphone].
2 On your smartphone, perform in the same way as in step 3 in "Connection without using NFC" (page 37). When you use NFC, display the recording screen on your camcorder, and touch on the camcorder to on the smartphone.
3 Operate the camcorder on your smartphone.

Notes

- Depending on local electrical interference or the smartphone's capabilities, the live view images may not be displayed smoothly.

Saving movies and photos to your computer via Wi-Fi

Connect your computer to a wireless access point or wireless broadband router in advance.

1 Install the dedicated software in your computer (first time only).

- If the software is already installed in your computer, update the software to the latest version.

2 Connect your camcorder to an access point as follows (first time only).

If you cannot register, refer to the instruction of the access point, or contact the person who set up the access point.

If the wireless access point has a WPS button

①On your camcorder, select

MENU → [Wireless] →

[Setting] → [WPS Push].

②Press the WPS button on the access point you want to register.

If you know the SSID and the password of your wireless access point

①On your camcorder, select MENU → [Wireless] →

[Setting] → [Access point settings].

②Select the access point you want to register, enter the password, then select [Next].

3 If your computer is not started, turn on the computer.

4 Start sending images from the camcorder to the computer.

①Press the (View Images) button on your camcorder.
② Select MENU → [Wireless] → [Function] → [Send to Computer].

• Images are automatically transferred to and saved on the computer.
• Only newly recorded images are transferred. Importing movies and multiple photos may take time.

Do not short-circuit the battery terminal with any metallic objects. This may cause a malfunction.

Playing back images with other devices

You may not be able to play back images that were recorded on your camcorder with other devices normally. Also, you may not be able to play back images recorded on other devices with your camcorder.

Recording and playback

• Avoid rough handling, disassembling, modifying, physical shock, or impact such as hammering, dropping or stepping on the product. Be particularly careful with the lens.
• To ensure stable operation of the memory card, it is recommended to format the memory card with your camcorder before the first use. Formatting the memory card will erase all the data stored on it and the data will be irrecoverable. Save your important data on your PC, etc.
• Confirm the direction of the memory card. If you forcibly insert the memory card in the wrong direction, the memory card, memory card slot, or image data may be damaged.

• Before starting to record, test the recording function to make sure the image and sound are recorded without any problems.

• Television programs, films, video tapes, and other materials may be copyrighted. Unauthorized recording of such materials may be a violation of the copyright laws.

• Compensation for the content of recordings cannot be provided, even if recording or playback is not possible due to a malfunction of the camcorder, recording media, etc.
• The camcorder is not dustproofed, dripproofed or waterproofed.
• Do not let your camcorder get wet, for example, from rain or sea water. If your camcorder gets wet, it may malfunction. Sometimes this malfunction cannot be repaired.
• Do not aim the camcorder at the sun or strong light. Doing so may cause your camcorder to malfunction.
• Do not use the camcorder near strong radio waves or radiation. The camcorder may not be able to record or play back images properly.
• Do not use the camcorder on a sandy beach or anywhere dusty. Doing so may cause your camcorder to malfunction.
• If moisture condensation occurs, stop using the camcorder until moisture evaporates.
• Do not subject the camcorder to mechanical shock or vibration. If you do so, the camcorder may operate incorrectly or may not record images. In addition, the recording medium or recorded data may be damaged.

LCD monitor

The LCD monitor is manufactured using extremely high-precision technology, so over 99.99% of the pixels are operational for effective use. However, there may be some tiny black points and/or bright points (white, red, blue, or green in color) that appear constantly on the LCD monitor. These points are normal results of the manufacturing process and do not affect the recording in any way.

Camcorder temperature

If you use the camcorder continuously for a long time, the camcorder gets very warm. This is not a malfunction.

Overheat protection

Depending on the camcorder and battery temperature, you may be unable to record movies or the power may turn off automatically to protect the camcorder. A message will be displayed on the LCD monitor before the power turns off or you can no longer record movies. In this case, leave the power off and wait until the camcorder and battery temperature goes down. If you turn on the power without letting the camcorder and battery cool enough, the power may turn off again or you may be unable to record movies.

Deactivating wireless LAN (Wi-Fi, NFC, etc.) temporarily

When you board an airplane, you can deactivate the Wi-Fi function temporarily. Select MENU

[Wireless] → [Setting] → [Airplane Mode] → [On].

About the security on using Wireless LAN products

• Please ensure that you always use a secured wireless network with your devices to avoid hacking, unapproved third party access and other vulnerabilities.
• It is important to set security when using the wireless network function.
• Sony makes no guarantees and is not responsible for any damage resulting from having inadequate security or using the wireless network function.

Troubleshooting

If you run into any problems using your camcorder:

• Check your camcorder referring to Help Guide (page 11).
• Disconnect the power source, attach the power source again after about 1 minute, and turn the camcorder on.
• Initialize your camcorder (page 43). All settings, including the clock setting, are reset.
• Contact your Sony dealer or local authorized Sony service facility.
