Frequently Asked Questions - SA-W641 SONY

How do I connect the SA-W641 subwoofer to my amplifier?
Use an RCA cable from the subwoofer output on your amplifier to the LINE IN on the subwoofer. Alternatively, connect speaker-level outputs to the SPEAKER IN terminals if your amplifier lacks a subwoofer output.
What is the recommended crossover frequency setting?
Set the crossover frequency to around 80-100 Hz for typical home theater setups. Adjust based on your main speakers' capabilities.
Why is my subwoofer not turning on?
Check the power cord connection and ensure the AC outlet is working. The subwoofer may be in auto standby mode; play audio to wake it up. Also verify the power switch is on.
Can I place the subwoofer in a corner?
Yes, corner placement can enhance bass output, but may cause boomy or uneven response. Experiment with placement for the best sound quality.
How do I clean the subwoofer cabinet?
Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the surface. Do not use any liquids or chemicals as they may damage the finish.
What does the phase switch do?
The phase switch (0° or 180°) adjusts the timing of the subwoofer's output relative to the main speakers. Set it to the position that produces the fullest bass at your listening position.
Is the SA-W641 compatible with Dolby Atmos?
Yes, as a subwoofer it provides low-frequency effects for Dolby Atmos systems. Connect it to your AV receiver's subwoofer output.
How can I reduce humming or buzzing noise?
Ensure all audio cables are properly shielded and away from power cords. Try connecting all equipment to the same power strip. If the issue persists, check the ground loop.
What is the maximum power handling of this subwoofer?
The SA-W641 has a built-in amplifier rated at 100W RMS. It is designed to operate at that level; exceeding it may cause distortion or damage.
Where can I find spare parts or repair service?
Contact Sony authorized service centers. Visit the Sony support website for your region to locate a service provider.

SAFETY CHECK-OUT

After correcting the original service problem, perform the following safety check before releasing the set to the customer:

Check the antenna terminals, metal trim, "metallized" knobs, screws, and all other exposed metal parts for AC leakage. Check leakage as described below.

LEAKAGE TEST

The AC leakage from any exposed metal part to earth ground and from all exposed metal parts to any exposed metal part having a return to chassis, must not exceed 0.5 mA (500 microampers). Leakage current can be measured by any one of three methods.

  1. A commercial leakage tester, such as the Simpson 229 or RCA WT-540A. Follow the manufacturers' instructions to use these instruments.
  2. A battery-operated AC milliammeter. The Dat Precision 245 digital multimeter is suitable for this job.
  3. Measuring the voltage drop across a resistor by means of a VOM or battery-operated AC voltage meter. The "limit" indication is 0.75 V, so analog meters must have an accurate low voltage scale. The Simpson 250 and Sanw SH-63Trd are examples of a passive VOM that is suitable. Nearly all battery operated digital multimeters that have a 2 V AC range and suitable. (See Fig. A)

COMPONENTS IDENTIFIED BY MARK ⚠ OR DOTTED LINE WITH MARK ⚠ ON THE SCHEMATIC DIAGRAMS AND IN THE PARTS LIST ARE CRITICAL TO SAFE OPERATION. REPLACE THESE COMPONENTS WITH SONY PARTS WHOSE PART NUMBERS APPEAR AS SHOWN IN THIS MANUAL OR IN SUPPLEMENTS PUBLISHED BY SONY.
