Frequently Asked Questions - PH 23 PCE Instruments
How do I calibrate the PH 23 meter?
To calibrate, immerse the electrode in a buffer solution (e.g., pH 7.00) and press the CAL button. The meter will automatically recognize the buffer. Repeat with additional buffers (pH 4.00 and 10.00) for multi-point calibration. Rinse the electrode with distilled water between buffers.
How often should I calibrate the pH meter?
For best accuracy, calibrate before each use, especially if measuring in different samples. At minimum, calibrate once a day. If the electrode is new or dry, soak it in storage solution for 30 minutes before calibration.
What batteries does the PH 23 use and how do I replace them?
The PH 23 uses three AAA batteries. To replace, slide off the battery compartment cover on the back, insert new batteries according to polarity, and replace the cover. Use alkaline batteries for long life.
How do I clean and store the electrode?
After each measurement, rinse the electrode with distilled water. For storage, place the electrode in a small amount of storage solution (KCl solution) to keep it hydrated. Never store in distilled water, as it will damage the electrode.
What is the measurement range of the PH 23?
The PH 23 measures pH from 0.00 to 14.00 with a resolution of 0.01 pH. It also measures temperature from 0 to 60 °C (32 to 140 °F) with automatic temperature compensation.
Why is the reading unstable?
Unstable readings can be due to a dirty or dry electrode, low battery, or electromagnetic interference. Clean the electrode, check the battery level, and ensure the sample is stirred gently. Also, make sure the electrode is fully immersed.
Can I replace the pH electrode?
Yes, the electrode is user-replaceable. Order a replacement electrode (model PH 23-E). To replace, unscrew the old electrode from the meter and screw on the new one. Condition the new electrode in storage solution for 30 minutes before use.
What does 'Err' or 'Lo' mean on the display?
'Err' indicates an error during calibration or measurement (e.g., out of range). 'Lo' means low battery. Replace the batteries. If 'Err' persists, recalibrate with fresh buffers or check the electrode condition.
Is the PH 23 waterproof?
The meter has a splash-proof housing but is not fully waterproof. Do not immerse the whole meter. Only the electrode and temperature sensor are designed for immersion up to the electrode junction. Wipe the meter dry after use.
How do I perform a one-point calibration?
For a quick check, use a single buffer (e.g., pH 7.00). Immerse the electrode, press CAL, and the meter will adjust to the buffer value. One-point calibration is sufficient for rough measurements; for precision, use two or three points.
