What type of fuel is recommended for the Kawasaki Concours 14 ABS?

The Kawasaki Concours 14 ABS requires premium unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 91 or higher (Ron method). Using lower octane fuel may cause engine knocking and reduce performance.

1. CrankcaseEmissionControlSystem

This system eliminates the release of crank case vapors into the atmosphere. Instead, the vaporsarerouted through an oil separator to the intakeside of the engine. While the engine is operating, the vapors are drawn into the combustion chamber, where they are burned along with the fuel and air supplied by the fuel injection system.

2. ExhaustEmissionControlSystem

This system reduces the amount of pollutants discharged into the atmosphere bytheexhaustofthismotorcycle. The fuel, ignition and exhaust system so this motorcycle have been carefully designed and constructed to ensure an efficient engine with low exhaust pollutant levels. The exhaust system of this model motor-cycle includes acatalytic convertersystem.

3.EvaporativeEmissionControlSystem

Theevaporativeemissioncontrolsystemforthisvehicleconsistsoflowperme-ationfuelhosesandfueltank.

Vaporscausedbyfuelevaporationinthefuelsystemarenotventedintothe atmosphere. Instead, fuelvaporsareroutedintotherunningenginetobeburned, orstoredinacanisterwhentheengineisstopped.

To ensure your motorcycle is serviced using the latest servicing information, it is recommended that an authorized Kawasaki Dealer performs the periodic maintenance as directed in the Owner's Manual.

Loading and Accessories Information

Maximum Load

Weightofrider, passenger, baggage, and accessories must not exceed 228 kg (503lb).

Passenger

1. Never carry more than one passenger.
2. The passenger should only sit on the pillion.
3. Anypassengers should be thoroughly familiar with motorcycle operation. The passenger can affect control of the motorcycle by improper positioning during cornering and sudden movements. It is important that the passengers still while the motorcycle is in motion and not interfered with the operation of the motorcycle. Donot carry animals on your motorcycle.

BaggageandLuggage

1. Allbaggageshouldbecarriedas lowaspossibletoreducetheeffect onthemotorcycle'scenterofgravity.Baggageweightshouldalsobe distributedequallyonbothsidesof themotorcycle.Avoidcarryingbag-gagethatextendsbeyondtherear ofthemotorcycle.
2. Baggages should be securely attached. Makes sure that the baggage

will not move around while you are riding. Recheck bagages security as often as possible (not while the motorcycle is in motion) and adjust as necessary.

1. Donotcarryheavyorbulkyitems onaluggagerack. It is designed for light items, and overloading can affect handling dueto changes in weight distribution and aerodynamic forces.

Accessories

1. Donotinstallaccessoriesorcarry baggage that impairs the performanceofthemotorcycle. Make surethatyouhavenotadversely affectedanylightingcomponents, road clearance,banking capability (i.e.,leanangle),controloperation, wheeltravel, frontforkmovement,

oranyotheraspectsofthemotorcycle'soperation.

1. Weightattachedtothehandlebars orfrontforkwillincreasethemass ofthesteeringassemblyandcan resultinanunsaferidingcondition.
2. Fairings, windshields, backrests, and other large item shavethecapability of adversely affecting stability and handling of the motorcycle, not only dueto their weight, but also dueto the aerodynamic force acting on these surfaces while the motorcycle is in operation. Poorly designed or installed item scan result in an unsaferiding condition.

Whengoingupsteepslopes, shift to alower gear so that there is powerto sparer rather than overloading the engine.

When applying the brakes, use both the front and rear brakes. Applying only one brake for sudden braking may cause them motor cycle to sit and lose control.

Braking

• Whenstopping, always apply both brakes at the same time. Normally the front brakes should be applied little more than therear. Shiftdownor fully disengagethe clutch as necessary to keep the engine from stalling.

• Foremergencybraking, disregard downshifting, and concentrate on

Kawasaki Advanced Coactive-braking Technology(K-ACT)-Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)

K-ACTsystemsupportshedistributionofthefront/rearbrakeforceinanoptimumbalancetomaintainastablevehicleposition.Whenusingthe

frontbrakelever,therightandleftfront calipersandtherearbrakeoperate. Whenusingtherearbrakepedal,the rearbrakeandtherightfrontcaliper operate.Thecooperativebrakebalanceiscontrolledoptimallyinresponse tothevehiclestatussuchasthebrake inputandthevehiclespeed.

ABSisdesigned to helpprevent thewheelsfromlockingupwhenthe brakesareappliedhardwhilerunning straight.TheABS automatically regulatesbrakeforce. Intermittentlygaining gripping force and braking force helps prevent wheel lock-up and allows stablesteeringcontrolwhilestopping.

Although K-ACT systems supports the distribution of the front/rear brake force in an optimum balance. The ABS provides stability while stopping by preventing wheellock-up, remember the following characteristics:

• Toapplythebrakeeffectively, use thefrontbrakeleverandrearbrake pedalsimultaneouslyinthesame mannerasconventionalmotorcycle brakesystem.
• K-ACTABScannotcompensate foradverseroadconditions,mis-judgmentorimproperapplicationof brakes.Youmusttakethesamecare aswithmotorcyclesnotequipped withK-ACTABS.
• ABSisnotdesignedtoshortenthe brakingdistance. Onloose,uneven ordownhillsurface,the stopping distanceof amotorcyclewithABSmay belongerthanthatofequivalentmotorcyclewithoutABS.Usespecial cautioninsuchareas.
• ABSwillhelppreventwheellock-up when braking in a straight line, but it cannot controlwheel slipwhich may be caused by brakingduring cornering.When turningthe corner,it is

better to limitbreakingtothelight applicationofbothbrakesornotto brake at all. Reduce your speed beforeyou getintothe corner.
- Sameasconventionalbrakesystem, an excessive suddenbrakingmay cause wheel lock up that makes it harder to control a motorcycle.
- Duringbraking, K-ACTABSwillnot prevent the rear wheel lifting.

Useofnon-recommendedtires maycausemalfunctioningof K-ACTABSandcanleadtoextendedbrakingdistance. The ridercouldhaveanaccidentas a result. Always use recommendedstandard tiresfor this motorcycle.

NOTE

○ When K-ACT system is functioning, you may feel a pulsing in the brake

lever or pedal and feel a change of thebrakingtouch. WhentheABSis functioning, you may feel apulsing in thebrakeleverorpedal. These are normal. Maintain braking pressure.

○ K-ACTsystemdoesnotfunctionat thespeedofapprox. 20km/h(12 mph)orbelowwhenthebrakestarts tobeapplied.ABSdoesnotfunction atthespeedofapprox.5km/h(3.1 mph)orbelow.

Stopping the Engine

StoppingtheMotorcyclein anEmergency

YourKawasakiMotorcyclehasbeen designedandmanufacturedtoprovideyouoptimumsafetyandconvenience.However,inordertofullybenefitfromKawasaki'ssafetyengineering andcraftsmanship,itisessentialthat you,theownerandoperator,properly maintainyourmotorcycleandbecome thoroughlyfamiliarwithitsoperation. Impropermaintenance can create a dangeroussituationknown as throttlefailure. Twoofthemostcommon causesofthrottlefailureare:

1. Animproperlyservicedorclogged aircleanermayallowdirtanddust toenterthethrottlebodyandstick thethrottleopen.
2. During removal of the air cleaner, dirt is allowed to enter and jam the fuel injection system.

Inanemergencysituationsuchas throttlefailure,yourvehiclemaybe stoppedbyapplyingthebrakesand disengagingtheclutch.Oncethis stoppingprocedureisinitiated,theenginestopswitchmaybeusedtostop theengine.Iftheenginestopswitchis used,turnofftheignitionswitchafter stoppingthemotorcycle.

Parking

WARNING

Operatingorparkingthevehiclenearflammablematerialscan causeafire,andcanresultin propertydamageor severe personalinjury. Do not idle or park your vehicle in an area where tall or dry vegetation,orotherflammablematerialscouldcomeintocontact withthemufflerorexhaustpipe.

When getting out of as slippery road while the KTRC is operating, closest the throttle first, and then open it again.

Self-diagnosisUncompleted

When the KTRC self-diagnosis has not been completed, the KTRC indicator blink slowly. The KTRC function cannot be used until the self-diagnosis has been completed. To complete the self-diagnosis, start the engine and run the motor cycle at as speed above 5 km/h (3.1 mph). When the self-diagnosis, start the motor-cycle carefully since the KTRC does not function until the properspeed is reached.

KTRCMalfunction

If the KTRC system failure occurs, the warning indicators and warning messagearedisplayed, theKTRC stopsfunctioning.

Cleanoffanyobstructionswitha streamoflow-pressurewater.

NOTICE

Using high-pressure water, as from acar wash facility, could damage the radiator fins and impair the radiator's effectiveness. Donotobstructor deflect airflow through the radiator by installing unauthorized access stories in front of the radiator or behind the cooling fan. Interference with the radiator airflow can lead to overheating and consequentengined damage.

MattePaintParts

• When washing the vehicle, always use amild neutral detergent and water, or cleaners formatte paint.

If your vehicle has leather accessories, special care must be taken. Use aleather cleaner/treatment to clean and care for leather accessories. Washing leather part with detergent and water will damage them, shortening their life.

Vinyl parts should be washed with the rest of the vehicle, then treated with a vinyltreatment.

Thesidewalls oftiresandotherrub-bercomponentsshouldbetreatedwith a rubber protectant to help prolong their useful life.

• Make sure that your FOBs are registered by the immobilizer system. If you need additionalspareFOBs, askanaauthorizedKawasakidealertoregisterthem.

If the engine will not start after completing the above inspection and maintenance, there may be something wrong with another systems such as the ignition system. Ask an authorized Kawasaki dealer for inspection and maintenance.

If the Engine Stall or Runs Poorly
