How to install the TP-Link TL-WA865RE Powerline adapter?

Plug the adapter directly into a wall socket near your router. Connect the router to the adapter using the provided Ethernet cable. Plug a second adapter (or use the Wi-Fi repeater) in another room. Press the Pair button on each adapter to synchronize them. The Powerline LED should become solid.

How to connect the adapter to the router?

Use the provided Ethernet cable to connect the Ethernet port of the adapter to a LAN port on your router. Ensure both devices are powered on. The Ethernet LED lights up when the connection is successful.

What to do if the Powerline LED does not light up?

Check that both adapters are plugged directly into wall sockets (not power strips or surge protectors). Press the Pair button on each adapter for 2 seconds. If the LED remains off, try another electrical outlet. An electric meter may also disrupt the signal.

How to configure the Wi-Fi network of the adapter?

Plug in the adapter and connect to its temporary Wi-Fi network (SSID: TP-Link_RE_XXXX). Open a browser and go to http://tplinkrepeater.net. Follow the wizard to set the SSID and Wi-Fi password. You can also clone your existing router settings.

Can I use multiple TP-Link Powerline adapters together?

Yes, you can add up to 16 Powerline adapters in the same network. To pair a new adapter, press the Pair button on an already connected adapter, then press the Pair button on the new adapter within 2 minutes. All adapters will use the same Powerline network.

What is the maximum distance between two Powerline adapters?

The distance can reach 300 meters on the electrical network, but performance depends on your home's electrical wiring. Outlets on the same circuit offer better performance. Circuit breakers or meters may reduce range.

How to reset the adapter?

Use a pin or paperclip to press the Reset button for about 10 seconds until all LEDs flash. The adapter will restart with factory settings. You will need to redo pairing and Wi-Fi configuration.

Is the adapter compatible with my electrical installation?

The adapter works on any standard electrical network at 100-240V, 50/60Hz. It uses existing wiring. Avoid plugging it into power strips with surge protectors or UPS units, as they may filter the Powerline signal.

How to secure my Powerline network?

By default, the Powerline network is protected by 128-bit AES encryption. To enhance security, you can change the Private Network Name (CLI) using the TP-Link utility or press the Pair button to generate a new random key. Avoid using the default SSID.

What to do if the adapter heats up?

Slight warming is normal. Ensure ventilation slots are not blocked and the adapter is not exposed to direct sunlight or a heat source. If temperature becomes excessive, unplug it and contact TP-Link support.

Set up your extender via one of the methods.

Method 1: Via TP-Link Tether App

Get the up-to-date Tether app, and follow the app instructions to complete the setup.

Method 2: Via a Web Browser

1 Plug the extender into an electrical outlet near your router and press the power button if it has one.

2 Connect your computer to the extender.

Via Wireless

Disconnect your Ethernet connection from your computer and connect to the extender's network (e.g. TP-Link_Extender or TP-Link_Extender_XXXX).

Via Ethernet Cable (If the extender has an Ethernet port)

Disable the Wi-Fi on your computer. Connect your computer to the extender via an Ethernet cable.

3 Launch a web browser and enter http://tplinkrepeater.net or http://192.168.0.254 in the address bar. Create a password to log in.

4 Follow the instructions on the web page to complete the initial configuration.

2 Relocate

To achieve better signal quality, plug in the extender halfway between your router and the Wi-Fi dead zone.

Connect your device to the extender using the extended SSID and Wi-Fi password that you've set during the configuration. The default Wi-Fi password is the same as your host network.

Entertainment Adapter

If your extender has an Ethernet port, it can be used as a wireless adapter to connect any Ethernet-only device such as a Blu-ray player, game console, DVR, or smart TV to your Wi-Fi network.

First, connect the extender to your router, then connect your Ethernet-only device to the extender via an Ethernet cable.

Q1 Why can't I see the login page after entering http://tplinkrepeater.net in the browser?

A1: Make sure your computer is connected to the extender either via the extended SSID or via an Ethernet cable (if the extender has an Ethernet port).

A2: Make sure your computer is set to obtain an IP address automatically.

A3: Use the IP address to access the extender. The default IP is 192.168.0.254. If the extender is connected to the router, you should go to your router's DHCP client list to obtain the extender's current IP address.

A4: Reset the extender and connect to its wireless network, enter http://tplinkrepeater.net or http://192.168.0.254 in a web browser and press Enter.

Q2 How do I reset the extender?

A: With the extender powered on, press the RESET button until the LEDs turn on momentarily, then release the button.
