Donotopenthestatic-protectivepackagecontainingthenewpartuntilthe defectiveparthasbeenremovedfromthecomputerandyouarareadytoinstall thenewpart.Staticelectricity,althoughharmlesstoyou,canseriouslydamage computercomponentsandparts.
When you handle computer parts and components, take these precaution to avoid static-electricity damage:
- Limityourmovement.Movementcancausestaticelectricitytobuilduparound you.
- Alwayscarefullyhandlethepartsandothercomputercomponents.HandlePCI cards, memorymodules, systemboards, and microprocessorsbytheedges. Nevertouchexposedcircuitry.
- Preventothersfromtouchingthepartsandothercomputercomponents.
- Beforeyoureplaceanewpart,touchthestatic-protectivepackagecontainingthe newparttoametalexpansion-slotcoverorotherunpaintedmetalsurfaceon thecomputerforatleasttwoseconds.Thisreducesstaticelectricityfromthe packageandyourbody.
- Removethenewpartfromthestatic-protectivepackageanddirectlyinstallitin thecomputerwithoutplacingitonanyothersurface.Ifitishardforyoutodo thisinyourspecificsituation,placethestatic-protectivepackageofthenewpart onasmooth,levelsurface,andthenplacethenewpartonthestatic-protective package.
- Donotplacethepartonthecomputercoverorothermetalsurface.

Creating and using recovery media
Youcanuserecoverymediatorestoretheharddiskdrivetothefactorydefault settings.Recoverymediaareusefulifyoutransferthecomputertoanotherarea, sellthecomputer,recyclethecomputer,orputthecomputerinanoperationalstate afterallothermethodsofrecoveryhavefailed.Asaprecautionarymeasure,itis importanttocreaterecoverymediaasearlyaspossible.
Note: Therecoveryoperationsyoucanperformusingrecoverymediavary dependingontheoperatingsystemfromwhichtherecoverymediawere created.Therecoverymediamightcontainabootmediumandadata medium.YourMicrosoftWindowslicensepermitsyoutocreateonlyone datamedium,soitisimportantthatyoustoretherecoverymediainasafe placeafteryouhavemadethem.
Creatingrecoverymedia
Thissectionprovidesinstructionsonhowtocreaterecoverymediaondifferent operatingsystems.
Note: On the Windows 7 operating system, you can create recovery media using disc store external USB storage devices. On the Windows XP operating system, you can create recovery media using only discs, so this operation is also called "creating Product Recovery discs."
- To create recovery media on the Windows 7 operating system, click Start → All Programs → Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools → Factory Recovery Disks. Then, followtheinstructionsonthescreen.
- TocreateProductRecoverydiscsontheWindowsXPoperatingsystem, click Start → All Programs → ThinkVantage → Create Recovery Media. Then, follow theinstructionsonthescreen.
Usingrecoverymedia

- OntheWindows7operatingsystem,youcanuserecoverymediatorestorethe computertothefactorydefaultsettingsonly.Youcanuserecoverymediatoput thecomputerinanoperationalstateafterallothermethodsofrecoveryhave failed.
Attention: When you user recoverymediatore restore the computer to the factory default settings, all the files currently on the hard disk drive will be deleted and replaced by the factory default settings.
TouserecoverymediaontheWindows7operatingsystem,dothefollowing:
- Depending on the type of your recovery media, connect the boot medium (memory key or other USB storage device) to the computer, or insert the boot disc into the optical drive.
- RepeatedlypressandreasetheF12keywhenturningonthecomputer. WhentheStartupDeviceMenuopens, releasetheF12key.
- SelectthedesiredstartupdeviceandpressEnter.Therestoreprocessbegins.
- Follow the instructions on the screent o complet the operation.
Notes:
- Afterrestoring your computer to the factory default settings, you might have to install device drivers for some devices. See "Installing or reinstalling device drivers" on page 58.
- SomecomputerscomewithMicrosoftOfficeorMicrosoftWorkspreinstalled. If you need to recover or reinstall your Microsoft Office or Microsoft Works applications, you must use the Microsoft Office CD or Microsoft Works CD. Thesediscs are provided only with computers preinstalled with Microsoft Office or Microsoft Works.

Attention: When you use Product Recovery disc store the computer to the factory default settings, all the files currently on the hard disk drivewill be deleted and replaced by the factory default settings. During the restore process, you will begin the option to save one or more files currently on the hard disk driveto other mediabefore the data is deleted.
TouseProductRecoverydiscsontheWindowsXPoperatingsystem,dothe following:
- RepeatedlypressandreleasetheF12keywhenturningonthecomputer. WhentheStartupDeviceMenuopens, releasetheF12key.
- Insertthebootdiscintotheopticaldrive.

- On the Rescue and Recovery menu, click Restore your system.

UsingtheRescueandRecoveryworkspace
TheRescueandRecoveryworkspaceresidesinaprotected,hiddenareaofyour harddiskdrivethatoperatesindependentlyfromtheWindowsoperatingsystem. Thisenablesyoutoperformrecoveryoperationsevenifyoucannotstartthe Windowsoperatingsystem.Youcanperformthefollowingrecoveryoperations fromtheRescueandRecoveryworkspace:
•Rescuefilesfromyourharddiskdriveorfromabackup
TheRescueandRecoveryworkspaceenablesyoutolocatefilesonyourhard diskdriveandtransferthemtoanetworkdriveorotherrecordablemedia,such asaUSBdeviceoradisc.Thissolutionisavailableevenifyoudidnotbackup yourfilesorifchangesweremadetothefilessinceyourlastbackupoperation. YoucanalsorescueindividualfilesfromaRescueandRecoverybackuplocated onyourlocalharddiskdrive,aUSBdevice,oranetworkdrive.
- RestoreyourharddiskdrivefromaRescueandRecoverybackup
If you have backed up your hard disk drive using the Rescue and Recovery program, you can restore the hard disk drive from a Rescue and Recovery backup, even if you cannot start the Windows operating system.
- Restoreyourharddiskdrivetothefactorydefaultsettings
TheRescueandRecoveryworkspaceenablesyoutorestorethecomplete contentsofyourharddiskdrivetothefactorydefaultsettings.Ifyouhave multiplepartitionsonyourharddiskdrive,youhavetheoptiontorestorethe factorydefaultsettingstotheC:partitionandleavetheotherpartitionsintact. Because the Rescue and Recovery workspaceoperatesindependently from the Windowsoperatingsystem,youcanrestorethefactorydefaultsettingsevenif youcannot start the Windowsoperatingsystem.
Attention: If you restore the hard disk drive from a Rescue and Recovery backup or restore the hard disk driveto the factory default settings, all files on the primary hard disk drive partition (usually drive C:) will be deleted in therecovery process. If possible, make copies of important files. If you are unable to start the Windows operating system, you can use the rescue file feature of the Rescue and Recovery workspacet copy files from your hard disk driveto other media.
TostarttheRescueandRecoveryworkspace,dothefollowing:
- Makesurethecomputeristurnedoff.
- RepeatedlypressandreleasetheF11keywhenturningonthecomputer.When youhearbeepsorseealogoscreen,releasetheF11key.
- If you have a Rescue and Recovery password, type your password when prompted. The Rescue and Recovery workspace opens after a short delay.

- If you have created a rescuemedium using a USB hard disk drive, use the following instruction to set the rescuemedium:
- AttachtheUSBharddiskdrivetooneoftheUSBconnectorsonyour computer.
- RepeatedlypressandreleasetheF12keywhenturningonthecomputer. WhentheStartupDeviceMenuopens, releasetheF12key.
- On the Startup Device Menu, select the USB hard disk drive as the first boot deviceandpressEnter.Therescuemediumstarts.
When the rescued medium starts, the Rescue and Recovery workspace opens. The help information for each feature is available from the Rescue and Recovery workspace. Follow the instruction to complete the recovery process.
Installingorreinstallingdevicedrivers
Beforeinstallingorreinstallingdevicedrivers,makesurethatyouhavea preinstalledoperatingsystemandthedocumentationandsoftwaremediaforthe device.
Devidedriversforfactory-installeddevicesarelocatedonthecomputerharddisk drive(usuallydriveC:)intheSWTOOLS\DRIVERSsubdirectory.Thelatestdevice driversforfactory-installeddevicesarealsoavailableathttp://www.lenovo.com/support.Otherdevicedriversareonthesoftwaremediathatcomewithindividual devices.
Toinstallorreinstallthedevicedriverforafactory-installeddevice,dothe following:
- Turnonthecomputer.

Use Windows Explorer or My Computer to display the directory structure of yourharddiskdrive.

GototheC:\SWTOOLSdirectory.
- OpentheDRIVERSfolder.WithintheDRIVERSfolder,thereareseveral subfoldersnamedforvariousdevicesinstalledinyourcomputer,suchas AUDIOorVIDEO.
- Opentheappropriatedevicesubfolder.
- Dooneofthefollowing:
- Inthedevicesubfolder, lookforaSETUP.exefile.Double-clickthefileand followtheinstructionsonthescreentocompletetheinstallation.
- Inthedevicesubfolder, lookforaREADME.txtfileorafilewiththe.txt extension. Thisfilemightbenamedaftertheoperatingsystem, such as WIN98.txt. The TXTfilecontainsinformationabouthowtoinstallthedevice driver. Followtheinstructionstocompletetheinstallation.
- If the devices subfolder contains a file with the infextension and you want to install the device driver using the INF file, referto your Windows Help and Support information system for detailed information about how to install the device driver.
Solvingrecoveryproblems
If you are unable to access the Rescue and Recovery workspace or the Windows environment, do one of the following:
- UsearescuemediumtostarttheRescueandRecoveryworkspace.See"Creating andusingarescuemedium"onpage57.
- User recovery media if all other method so recovery have failed and you need to restore the hard disk driveto the factory default settings. See "Creating and using recovery media" on page 53.
Note: If you are unable to access the Rescue and Recovery workspace or the Windows environment from a rescu medium or a set of recovery media, you might not have a rescue device (an internal hard disk drive, adisc, a USB hard disk drive, or other external devices) set the first boot device in the startup devices sequence. You must first make sure that your rescue device is set the first boot device in the startup devices sequence in the Setup Utility program. See "Selecting a startup device" on page 63 for detailed information about temporarily or permanently changing the startup devices sequence. For more information about the Setup Utility program, see Chapter 4, "Using the Setup Utility program," on page 61.
Itisimportanttocreatearescuemediumandasetofrecoverymediaasearlyas possibleandstoretheminasafeplaceforfutureuse.
Chapter4. Using the Setup Utility program
YoucanusetheSetupUtilityprogramtoviewandchangetheconfiguration settingsofyourcomputer,regardlessofwhichoperatingsystemyouareusing. However,theoperatingsystemsettingsmightoverrideanysimilarsettingsinthe SetupUtilityprogram.

When working with the Setup Utility program, you must set the keyboard. The keys used to perform various tasks are displayed at the bottom of each screen.
Usingpasswords
By using the Setup Utility program, you can set up password to prevent unauthorized access to your computer and data. The following options are available to help you set up power-on passwords or an administrator password:
- SetPower-OnPassword
- SetAdministratorPassword
Youdonothavetosetapasswordtouseyourcomputer.However,usinga passwordimprovescomputingsecurity.Ifyoudecidetosetapassword,readthe followingsections.
Passwordconsiderations
Apasswordcanbeanycombinationofupto16(1to16)alphabeticandnumeric characters.Forsecurityreasons,itisrecommendedtouseastrongpasswordthat cannotbeasilycompromised.Tosetastrongpassword,usethefollowing guidelines:

Power-onpassword
Afteryouhavesetapower-onpasswordusingtheSetPower-OnPassword option,apasswordpromptisdisplayedeachtimeyouturnonthecomputer.You cannotusethecomputeruntilalvalidpasswordistypedin.Formoreinformation abouthowtosetapassword,see"Setting,changing,ordeletingapassword."
Administratorpassword
TheSetAdministratorPasswordoptionenablesyoutosetanadministrator password,whichdetersunauthorizedusersfromchangingconfigurationsettings. Ifyouareresponsibleformaintainingthesettingsofseveralcomputers,youmight wanttosetanadministratorpassword.Formoreinformationabouthowtoseta password,see"Setting,changing,ordeletingapassword."
Afteryouhavesetanadministratorpassword,apasswordpromptisdisplayed eachtimeyoutrytoaccesstheSetupUtilityprogram.YoucannotaccesstheSetup Utilityprogramuntilavalidpasswordistypedin.
If you have set both a power-on password and an administrator password, you can type either password to use your computer. However, to change any configuration settings, you must use your administrator password.
Setting, changing, ordeletingapassword

Toset, change, or delete a password, do the following:

Usingsystemprograms
Systemprogramsarethebasiclayerofsoftwarebuiltintoyourcomputer.System programsincludethePOST,theBIOS,andtheSetupUtilityprogram.ThePOSTis asetoftestsandproceduresthatareperformedeachtimeyouturnonyour computer.TheBIOSisalayerofsoftwarethattranslatesinstructionsfromother layersofsoftwareintoelectricalsignalsthatthecomputerhardwarecanexecute. YoucanusetheSetupUtilityprogramtovieworchangetheconfigurationsettings ofyourcomputer.SeeChapter4,"UsingtheSetupUtilityprogram,"onpage61 fordetailedinformation.
Yourcomputersystemboardhasamodulecalledelectricallyerasable programmableread-onlymemory(EEPROM,alsoreferredtoasflashmemory). YoucaneasilyupdatethePOST,theBIOS,andtheSetupUtilityprogramby startingyourcomputerwithasystem-program-updatediscorrunningaspecial updateprogramfromyouroperatingsystem.

- LocatetheClearCMOS/Recoveryjumperonthesystemboard.See"Locating partsonthesystemboard"onpage11.
- Removeanypartsanddisconnectanycablethatmightpreventyouraccess totheClearCMOS/Recoveryjumper.
- Movethejumperfromthestandardposition(pin1andpin2)tothe maintenanceposition(pin2andpin3).
- Reinstallanypartsandreconnectanycablesthathavebeenremovedor disconnected.

Reinstall the computer cover and reconnect the power cords for the computer and monitor. See "Completing the parts replacement" on page 46.
