Please read the operating instructions carefully and observe the notes given. Use these operating instructions to familiarise yourself with the product, the proper use and the safety instructions.

For safety reasons, children and young people under the age of 16, as well as people not familiar with these operating instructions, may not use this product. Persons with reduced physical or mental abilities may use the product only if they are supervised or instructed by a responsible person. Children must be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the product.

1. Area of application of your GARDENA Accu Shears

Proper use with Grass and BoxwoodBlade:

The GARDENA Accu Grass Shears are suitable for cutting lawn edges, smaller grass areas and for precise shaping of shrubs, in particular boxwood, for the private home or hobby garden.

Proper use with Shrub Blade: The GARDENA Accu Shrub Shears are intended for cutting individual bushes, shrubs and climbing plants in private domestic and hobby gardens.

DANGER! Risk of injury!

The Accu Shears may not be used for chopping in the sense of composting.

With the Shrub Blade Art. 2342 / 2343, the Accu Shears are not suited for cutting lawns / lawn edges.

General Power Tool Safety Warnings

WARNING! Read all safety warnings and all instructions. Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and / or serious injury.

Save all warnings and instructions for future reference. The term "power tool" in the warnings refers to your mains operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.

1) Work area safety

a) Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents
b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool.
Distractions can cause you to lose control.

2) Electrical safety

a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adaptor plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.

c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk electric shock.

d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.

e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.

f) If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.

3) Personal safety

a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
b) Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat and hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
c) Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and /or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.

d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tools may result in personal injury.

e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.

f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.

g) If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.

4) Power tool use and care

a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application.
The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.

b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off.

Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.

c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and /or the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools.

Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.

d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.

e) Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool's operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.

f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean.

Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control. g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed.

Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.

5. Battery tool use and care

a) Recharge only with the charger specified by the manufacturer. A charger that is suitable for one type of battery pack may create a risk of fire when used with another battery pack.

b) Use power tools only with specifically

designated battery packs. Use of any other battery packs may create a risk of injury and fire.

c) When battery pack is not in use, keep it away from other metal objects, like paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws or other small metal objects, that can make a connection from one terminal to another. Shorting the battery terminals together may cause burns or a fire.

d) Under abusive conditions, liquid may be ejected from the battery; avoid contact. If contact accidentally occurs, flush with water. If liquid contacts eyes, additionally seek medical help. Liquid ejected from the battery may cause irritation or burns.

6. Service

Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

Hedge trimmer safety warnings:

• Keep all parts of the body away from the cutter blade. Do not remove cut material or hold material to be cut when blades are moving. Make sure the switch is off when clearing jammed material. A moment of inattention while operating the hedge trimmer may result in serious personal injury.
• Carry the hedge trimmer by the handle with the cutter blade stopped. When transporting or storing the hedge trimmer always fit the cutting device cover. Proper handling of the hedge trimmer will reduce possible personal injury from the cutter blades.
• Hold the power tool by insulated gripping surfaces only, because the cutter blade may contact hidden wiring. Cutter blades contacting a "live" wire may make exposed metal parts of the power tool "live" and could give the operator an electric shock.

Additional Safety Recommendations

Work area safety

Only use the product in the manner and for the functions described in these instructions. The operator or user is responsible for accidents or hazards occurring to other people or their property. Warning! This machine produces an electromagnetical field during operation. This field may under some circumstances interfere with active or passive medical implants. To reduce the risk of serious or fatal injury, we recommend persons with medical implants to consult their physician and the medical implant manu facturer before operating this machine. Danger! Small parts could be swallowed during assembly and there is a risk of suffocation from the polybag. Keep infants away during assembly. Do not use the product when a thunderstorm is approaching.

Electrical safety

Use only on AC mains supply voltage shown on the product rating label. Under no circumstances should an earth be connected to any part of the product.

Personal safety

Always wear suitable clothing, gloves, and stout shoes. Thoroughly inspect the area where the product is to be used and remove all wires and other foreign objects. All adjustments have to be made with the sheath in place, and the Accu Shears must not rest on the blade in the process. Before using the machine and after any impact, check for signs of wear or damage and repair as necessary. If the device can no longer be switched off in the event of a defect, place the device on a solid surface and monitor it until the battery is empty. Send the defective device to our GARDENA Service Centre. Never attempt to use an incomplete product or one with an unauthorised modification.

Power tool use and care

Know how to stop the product quickly in an emergency. Never hold the product by the guard.

Do not use the Accu Shears if the protection equipment (protection cover, quick blade-stop) are damaged.

Do not use ladders whilst operating the product.

Remove the battery:

– before leaving the product unattended for any period;
– before clearing a blockage;
– before checking, cleaning or working on the appliance;
- if you hit an object. Do not use your product until you are sure that the entire product is in a safe operating condition;
- if the product starts to vibrate abnormally. Check immediately. Excessive vibration can cause injury.
– before passing to another person.

Maintenance and storage

Keep all nuts, bolts and screws secure to be sure the Accu Shears is in safe working condition.

Battery safety

RISK!

The battery to be charged must be placed on a non-flammable, heat resistant and non-conductive surface while charging.

Keep corrosive, flammable and easily combustible objects clear of the battery charger and the battery. Do not cover the battery charger and the battery while charging.

Unplug the battery charger immediately in the event of smoke formation or fire.

Only use the original GARDENA Battery Charger for charging. The use of other battery chargers may damage the batteries irreparably and even cause a fire.

→ Protect Accu Shears from heat and fire. Do not leave on radiators or expose to strong sunshine for long periods.

→ Protect the battery charger from damp or wet areas.

Only use your Accu Shears in an ambient temperature between -10^ and +45^ .

A non-functioning battery must be disposed of correctly. It may not be sent via post. For further details, please contact your local disposal companies.

The battery charger should be checked regularly for signs of damage or ageing (brittleness) and may only be used if it is in perfect condition.

The charger unit provided may only be used to charge the rechargeable batteries supplied with the Accu Shears.

Non-rechargeable batteries must not be charged with this battery charger (danger of fire).

The Accu Shears must not be operated during charging.

After charging, disconnect the charger from the mains and from the battery.

Only charge battery between 10 - 45 °C.

After heavy duty service allow battery to cool down first.

Storage

The Accu Shears must not be stored over 35 °C or under direct exposure to sunlight.

Do not store the Accu Shears in places with static electricity.

3. Assembly

Fitting / Removing the Wheels:

Wheels are only included with the Grass Shears (Art. 8890/Art. 8893).

(They may be ordered separately from GARDENA Service).

Fitting the Wheels:

→ From below, press the wheels① into the grass shears until the two pins ② click into place.

Removing the Wheels:

→ From the underside of the grass shears, push both wheels together ① and pull them off.

4. Initial Operation

Charging the Accu:

The battery should be fully charged before using for the first time. Charging time, see 10. Technical Data.

The lithium-ion battery can be re-charged in any state of charge, and the charging process can be interrupted at any time without damaging the battery (no memory effect).

The Accu Shears cannot be started during charging.

WARNING!

→ Ensure the correct mains voltage.

1. Connect charging cable③ to the jack ④ of the Accu Shears.
2. Connect battery charger to an electrical socket.
   During charging, the jack④ flashes green. The battery is charged.
   When the jack ④ lights up green, the battery is fully charged.
   Check the charge status regularly while charging.
3. First pull the charging cable③ out of the jack ④ and then unplug the battery charger from the electrical socket.

When there is a sharp fall in the power of the Accu Shears, the battery needs to be charged. Do not wait until the blade comes to an absolute stop.

If the jack lights up red or yellow during charging then there is an error (see 8. Trouble-Shooting).

5. Operation

WARNING! Risk of Injury!

There is a risk of injury if the switching devices installed on the Shears are removed or bridged (e.g. by fastening the on switch to the handle). This prevents the Accu Shears switching off automatically.

→ Never remove or bridge the switching devices.

The starting lockout ⑦ prevents your GARDENA Accu Shears from being switched on unintentionally.

Cut grass / shrubs:

1. Grass Shears:

Clear the area to be cut of stones and other solid objects and remove the blade guard ⑤ from the cutting blade.

Accu Shrub Shears:

Remove the blade guard ⑤ from the cutting blade.

Press elbow joint ⑥ on both sides and adjust motor housing with blade to desired angle.

3. Cutting:

Disengage the starting lockout⑦ by pushing it forwards and press the ON button⑧. Release the starting lockout⑦ again.

The GARDENA Telescopic Swivel Handle Art. No. 8899 for the Accu Shears can be mounted in 45° steps. The swivel handle is fully height adjustable (85 – 120 cm) and can be adapted to suit your height.

→ Slide blade protection⑤ onto shear blade.

Fitting the Telescopic Swivel Handle:

→ Guide the swivel handle⑨ at the desired angle into the handle holder of the Accu Shears until the lock engages.

Removing the Telescopic Swivel Handle:

→ Press the release button ^⑩ and pull out the swivel handle.

The starting lockout ⑦ and ON button ⑧ on the Accu Shears no longer function when the swivel handle is mounted.

Change Shears Set of Blades:

Cutting with the Telescopic Swivel Handle:

1. Attach the Telescopic Swivel Handle.
2. Loosen the adjusting bolt ⑪.
3. Set the handle to the correct length and tighten the adjusting bolt ⑪.
4. Disengage the starting lockout ^7a by pushing it forwards and press the ON button ^8a .
5. Release the starting lockout ⑦ again.

Please only use original GARDENA Accu Shears Cutting Blades.

• Grass+Boxwood-Blade Set cutting width 8 cm Art. 2340
• Shrub-Blade Set cutting length 12.5 cm Art. 2342

• Shrub Blade Set cutting length 18 cm Art. 2343

• Press both lock buttons ^⑫ at the same time, flip up shear blade set ^⑬ and remove.

• If necessary clean transmission chamber and lubricate gear wheels with some acid-free grease (Vaseline).
• Place the shear blade set ^13 with the snap-in lug ^14 into the groove ^15 and snap shut until both lock buttons ^12 have audibly engaged.
• If necessary, spray the shear blades with Cleaning Spray Art. 2366. This increases the running time.

When first switching on after changing the blade set, there can be an audible click when the cam engages with the the shear blade connecting link.

6. Putting into Storage

Storage / Overwintering: Store your Accu Shears out of the reach of children.

1. Charge battery. This increases the life of the battery.
2. Clean Accu Shears and shear blade with GARDENA Cleaning Spray Art. 2366 (see 7. Maintenance).
3. Slide blade protection onto the shear blade.
4. Store Shears in a cool, dry place where they are protected from frost.

Disposal:

(in accordance with RL 2012/19/EU)

The product must not be added to normal household waste. It must be disposed of in line with local environmental regulations.

Disposal of batteries:

The GARDENA Accu Shears contains lithium-ion cells that should not be discarded with normal household waste at the end of their life.

Please return the lithium-ion cells to your GARDENA dealer or dispose of them properly at a public recycling centre.

1. Discharge lithium-ion cells completely.
2. Remove lithium-ion cells ^16 from the Accu Shears.
3. Dispose of lithium-ion cells ⑯ properly.

Cleaning the Accu Shears and Oiling the Blades:

Blades can cause injury.

→ For maintenance work, slide on the blade protection and do not push the safety lock forward.

There is a risk of personal injury and damage to the Shears if you clean them under running water (especially under high pressure).

→ Never clean your Shears under running water.

To increase operating time, the Accu Shears should be cleaned and sprayed after each use.

1. Clean your Accu Shears with a damp cloth.
2. Spray shear blade with GARDENA Cleaning Spray Art. 2366.

8. Trouble-Shooting

DANGER! Risk of Injury!

Replacing the Cutting Blades:

Blades can cause serious injury.

→ When troubleshooting, slide on blade protection and do not push the safety lock of the Accu Shears forward.

If the Accu Shears do not cut cleanly even after thorough cleaning, the cutting blades are defective and must be replaced with new ones (see 5. Operation "Change blade set").

Please only use original GARDENA Accu Shears Cutting Blades.

Problem Possible Cause Remedy

During charging socket flashes red	A fault has occurred during charging.	→ Unplug and reinsert charging cable. The fault will be reset.
During operation the charging jack flashes yellow	The motor is overloaded through a blockage of the blades and switches off.	→ Remove blockage.Start Accu Shears anew.The fault is remedied.
Shrub Blade will not function	Cam of the Accu Shears does not engage with the Shrub Blade connecting link 17.	→ Pull connecting link17down and place Shrub Blade on anew.

For any other malfunctions please contact the GARDENA service department. Repairs must only be carried out by GARDENA service departments or specialist dealers authorised by GARDENA.

11. Service/Warranty

Warranty: GARDENA guarantees this product for 2 years (from date of

purchase). This guarantee covers all serious defects of the unit that can be proved to be material or manufacturing faults. Under warranty we will either replace the unit or repair it free of charge if the following conditions apply:

• The unit must have been handled properly and in keeping with the requirements of the operating instructions.
• Neither the purchaser or a non-authorised third party have attempted to repair the unit.

The Trimmer Blades are wearing parts and are not covered by the guarantee.

This manufacturer's guarantee does not affect the user's existing warranty claims against the dealer / seller.

If you have any problems with this product, please contact our Service or return the defective unit together with a short description of the problem – in case of guarantee, with a copy of the receipt – postage paid to one of the GARDENA Service Centres listed on the back of this leaflet.
