Frequently Asked Questions - SC0311 S.Coifman

How long is the warranty on my S.Coifman SC0311 watch?
The watch comes with a 3-year limited warranty from the date of purchase from an authorized retailer. It covers manufacturing defects in the hands, dial, and movement. Other components like crystal, crown, case, strap, and battery are not covered.
What should I do if my watch needs battery replacement?
For proper battery replacement, contact the S. Coifman International Watch Service Center (IWSC) at 1-800-463-6816. Avoid opening the watch yourself as it may void the warranty.
How do I set the date and time on a screw-down crown watch?
First, unscrew the crown by turning it counterclockwise until it springs open. Then gently pull it out to the first or second click position to adjust date or time. After setting, push the crown back in and screw it tightly to maintain water resistance.
What is Tritnite® and how does it work?
Tritnite® is an environmentally friendly luminous material used exclusively by S.Coifman. It requires 4-5 hours of light exposure to glow brightly in the dark, and it continues to perform with regular light exposure.
What is the difference between quartz, automatic, and manual wind watches?
Quartz watches are battery-powered and don't need winding. Automatic watches wind themselves with wrist movement but can also be hand-wound. Manual wind watches require daily hand-winding by turning the crown clockwise until resistance is felt.
How do I start my automatic watch if it stops?
You can hand-wind it by turning the crown clockwise a number of turns (unscrew if necessary), or swing it side to side for 30 seconds. For long-term storage, consider a watch winder box.
What does the 24-hour or GMT indicator do?
The 24-hour indicator shows a.m. or p.m. via a hand that completes a full rotation in 24 hours. It can also be used as a second time zone reference. Often paired with a sun/moon display.
How should I ship my watch for service?
Include a copy of purchase proof, a description of the issue, your contact info, and a $28 money order/check for evaluation and return shipping. Ship to: IWSC, 9298 S 500 West, Sandy, UT 84070, USA. Insure the package. Do NOT include gift boxes or exotic straps.
Is my watch water-resistant? What can void the warranty?
Water resistance depends on the model. Always ensure crowns and pushers are closed/screwed before water exposure. Failure to do so will void the water resistance warranty. The warranty also voids if the watch is opened by an unauthorized third party.
What are the subdials for?
Subdials indicate various functions: Small seconds (continuous seconds), Chronograph minutes/hours (elapsed time), 24-hour/GMT (second time zone), Sun/Moon (a.m./p.m.), Moonphase (lunar cycle), and Power Reserve (remaining energy on automatics).

The 3 Year S. Coifman Warranty.

Each genuine S. Coifman timepiece purchased from an authorized S. Coifman retailer is in its original and tested condition and should only be serviced through the S. Coifman Service Center during the warranty period in accordance with the terms of the standard 3-Year S. Coifman Warranty.

If S. Coifman timepieces are purchased from sources other than authorized retailers or are serviced or repaired by unqualified third parties, they may be subject to alterations from their original condition that are beyond the control of S. Coifman.

As S. Coifman cannot guarantee the quality standards of an altered timepiece, the above-mentioned standard 3-year warranty on S. Coifman items will be invalid. In such cases, the purchaser has to rely on the seller's warranty.

S. Coifman timepieces are designed, crafted and tested for superior quality with a long life expectancy. Should you discover that, despite our rigorous testing, your watch is not functioning properly during the warranty period or after, simply send it to our service center. Although our main concern lies in minimizing the time that a watch is in service, it is important for our clients to understand that every watch sent in for service is thoroughly inspected for faults in craftsmanship, material damage, movement-related irregularities, as well as other factors that could have an impact on the overall appearance and performance of the watch.

When all apparent problems are resolved, your watch will enter a two-week testing period, during which time the accuracy of the movement is observed and recorded day by day. Should your watch function properly at the conclusion of the testing period, it will be sent to you immediately. Should the technician designated to repair or overhaul your watch find it necessary to re-submit the watch into observation, your watch will be tested and observed for one more week.

Typically, the first testing phase is sufficient for most watches. However, some watches need additional attention. Should your watch be among those few, please understand that our only concern is with the performance of your watch once you receive it back. We appreciate both your understanding and patience in this case.

In case of a discovered defect which is covered by the limited warranty, we will repair or replace your timepiece upon an evaluation. This warranty does not cover regular wear and tear, such as scratches that may be caused by daily use on the metal band, case or crystal. The warranty will be voided if the watch has been mishandled or used under extraordinary conditions. Opening the watch by an unauthorized third party automatically voids this warranty. Under this warranty, your watch is also protected for the indicated water resistance. It is important to know that you must always keep the crowns and pushers closed and/or screwed in correctly before submerging the watch in water. Not doing so will void the warranty on the water resistance. These above stated terms and warranty apply only to new watches.

Important things to know.

Screw Down Crowns: Many S. Coifman watches are equipped with a screw down crown to help prevent water infiltration. This is most common on our Diver models. In order to adjust the date and / or time on such a watch, you must first unscrew the crown before you can gently pull it out to its first or second click stop position. To do this, simply rotate the crown counterclockwise until it springs open. When you have finished setting the watch, the crown must then be pushed in and screwed back in tightly. Not doing so will cancel the water resistance of the watch and will void all warranties from the manufacturer. Overall, this process should not require a lot of effort or force.

Tritnite® Luminous Markers: Tritnite® is an environmentally friendly luminous material used exclusively by S. Coifman. Tritnite® requires 4 - 5 hours of exposure to light for it to glow brightly in the dark. It will continue to perform with regular exposure to light.

Quartz, Automatic, and Manual Wind Watches.

A Quartz Watch is battery powered and does not require winding. Eventually the battery will need to be replaced.

An Automatic Watch is a mechanical watch that winds itself and does not require a battery. When worn daily, the movement of the wrist causes the mainspring to wind progressively, eliminating the need for additional winding. To start your automatic, you can hand wind it by rotating the crown clockwise a number of turns while in its normal operating position (screw down crowns will need to be unscrewed first), or by swinging it side to side for 30 seconds. We recommend housing an automatic in a watch winder box.

A Manual Wind Watch is a mechanical watch that does not require a battery, but can only be wound by hand. To wind it, turn the crown clockwise while it is in its normal operating position until you feel resistance. This type of watch should be wound daily.

What does this indicate?

Many S. Coifman watches are equipped with features that go beyond the telling of time and date. These functions are displayed on what are called subdials, indicators, counters, or zones. Your watch may have one or more of these. Knowing them will be useful when identifying which instructions pertain to your watch.

PLEASE NOTE: Because dial designs and shapes vary, not all subdials are perfectly round, or positioned in the same place.
