How do I set the temperature on my Smeg freezer?

For electronic control units, turn the temperature selector button A between Min and Max. For models with a digital display, the set temperature flashes and then automatically saves. Recommended setting is around -18°C (Eco position). For mechanical control, rotate the knob between Min and Max; the middle position is recommended.

What does the red LED light mean?

The red LED indicates a high temperature alarm. It lights up when the interior temperature rises too much, and goes off automatically when the temperature drops to a safe level. On some models, an audible alarm also sounds, which can be silenced by pressing the alarm off button.

How do I activate the Super Freeze function?

For control unit I, press the E button (orange LED lights up). For control units II and III, rotate the A knob to the SF position. The function deactivates automatically after about two days. Use Super Freeze 24 hours before freezing fresh food.

How do I defrost my freezer if it is a traditional (non-No Frost) model?

24 hours before defrosting, activate Super Freeze. Then empty the freezer, switch off the appliance, and unplug it. Remove the funnel-shaped groove and place a vessel underneath to collect defrost water. Do not use mechanical devices or sprays. Clean the interior and dry it before restarting.

Can I reverse the door swing?

Yes, the door is reversible. You will need tools: socket spanner nr. 8, screwdriver, and Torx 25. Carefully follow the steps in the manual: remove hinges, swap the swing stopper and forced closure system, and reattach the bottom hinge on the opposite side. Note that models with a full-height handle cannot be reversed.

Why is the freezer door hard to open after closing?

This is normal and due to pressure equalization. When the door is opened, cold air escapes and is replaced by warm air. When the door is closed, the warm air cools, creating a vacuum. Wait a few minutes and the door will open easily.

How should I clean my freezer?

Unplug the appliance before cleaning. Use a soft cloth with mild liquid detergent for the exterior. For plastic or coated surfaces, use alcohol-based cleaner (e.g., glass cleaner). Wash the interior with lukewarm water and a little vinegar. Keep the condenser on the rear clean with a non-metallic brush or vacuum cleaner.

What does the error code E1 on the display mean?

If the character E1 appears on the digital display, it indicates a fault. You should call the nearest service center for assistance. Provide the information from the rating plate.

How do I replace the light bulb?

Disconnect the appliance from the power supply. Remove the plastic cover over the bulb. Replace with a new bulb of type E14, maximum same voltage as the original. Refit the cover. Note that the light bulb is considered a consumable and is not covered by warranty.

What is the No Frost system?

The No Frost system uses a fan and automatic defrost cycle to prevent ice buildup. Air is circulated to maintain even temperature, reducing frost formation. The fan stops when the door is open or during compressor idle. This model is a NO FROST freezer.

Before first operation

• The appliance is manufactured in compliance with all relevant safety standards; however, it is recommended that persons with impaired physical, sensory, or mental abilities, or persons with inadequate experience and knowledge, do not use the appliance without due supervision. The same recommendation applies to minors using the appliance.
• Before connecting the appliance, read these instructions carefully. They describe the appliance and provide instructions for its safe and correct use. The instructions are prepared for different types and models of the appliance, so they may contain descriptions of functions and components that your appliance may not have.

The instructions also cover the NO FROST freezer version, which features an integrated fan and automatic defrost.

• Remove the wrapping that protects the appliance during transport. Door corners are fitted with protective spacers. Remove the spacers and replace them with the attached pegs.
• Before connecting the appliance to the mains supply, leave it in an upright position for about 2 hours. This will reduce the possibility of malfunctions in the cooling system resulting from prior transport and handling.
• The appliance must be connected to the mains supply in accordance with the standing regulations and local requirements.
• The appliance must not be used in open air or exposed to weather precipitation.
• Always disconnect the appliance from the power supply (pull the power cord from the wall socket) before cleaning and before replacing the light bulb.
• If the power supply cord is damaged, in order to avoid hazard, it must be replaced by the service or by qualified personnel.
• In case of long periods of not using the appliance, turn the appliance off with the ON/OFF button and disconnect it from the mains supply. Empty the appliance, clean the interior, and leave the door ajar.

Installation and connection

Selecting the location

- Place the appliance in a dry and well aired room. The appliance operates best at temperature ranges indicated in the chart below. See relevant class of the appliance indicated on the rating plate.

Positioning the appliance

Positioning the appliance requires two people in order to avoid possible damage.

• Place the appliance firmly on a flat and solid base. The appliance is fitted with adjustable feet on the front side, used to level the appliance. Rear side of the appliance is fitted with wheels (certain models only) facilitating the positioning of the appliance at the preselected place.
• The element above the appliance must be at least 5 cm away to allow sufficient cooling of the condenser.
• Avoid exposing the appliance to direct sunlight or heat sources. If this is not possible, place insulation between the appliance and adjacent heat source.
• Bottom front corners of the appliance are fitted with handles to facilitate moving of the appliance. The appliance may stand independently or adjacent to a furniture element or wall. Be sure to leave enough space for the opening of the door, to avoid damage to the appliance or injury to people.

Connecting to power supply

• Use the power cord to connect the appliance to the mains power. Wall outlet must be fitted with ground terminal (safety socket). Nominal voltage and frequency are indicated on the relevant label or rating plate of the appliance.
• Mains power connection and grounding must be made in accordance to standard regulations and requirements.

The appliance is able to accommodate minor temporary voltage fluctuations, which do not exceed -10% to +6%.

Reverse door swing

Required tools: socket spanner nr. 8, screwdriver, torx 25

Caution! After unscrewing of before fixing hinges, hold the door to prevent it from falling and damaging.

1. Remove upper hinge cover (keep it for eventual later use), together with cover on the opposite side of the upper hinge cover (on the opposite side you will insert the attached cover during the assembly), and remove the cover on the opposite side of the upper part of the door.
2. Unscrew upper hinge screws and remove the door from the bottom hinge.
3. On the bottom side of the door unscrew the swing stopper screws and remove the stopper (A). Keep this for later use. Fix the attached stopper with its bearing on the opposite side of the door.
4. Unscrew the forced door closure system (B) and fix it to the opposite side of the door (certain models only).
5. Tilt the appliance backward (max. 35°) to lean to the rear side of the cabinet. Unscrew the leg support screws (C) - left and right, and remove the leg support cover (D). Unscrew and remove, then reciprocally replace the position of end switch (E) and decorative peg (F) (for models with forced door closing system). Place this on the opposite side. Unscrew three screws fixing the bottom hinge (keep this for possible later use), and fix the attached bottom hinge on the opposite side.
6. Proceed with the assembly procedure in opposite sequence.

Note:

In appliances with the handle along the entire height of the door, the reverse door swing is not possible.

The ON/OFF button

Setting freezer temperature

The appliance is switched on by turning the button A towards Max. (Green LED on). The appliance is switched off when the arrow on the button points to the ON/OFF mark ⏻ (the appliance, however, is still under mains power).

• Temperature of the appliance is set by turning the button A to the position between the Min and Max span.
• Recommended setting of the thermostat knob is to Eco position (around -18°C in appliances with digital display).
• The digital display (certain models only) flashes and indicates the set temperature. When the flashing stops, the setting is complete and is automatically saved in memory. Please allow time for the appliance to reduce to the desired temperature.

Each time the appliance is switched on for the first time, the digital display (G) indicates a temperature of -16°C and flashes. This value remains on the display until the actual temperature falls below the indicated value. Then the flashing stops and the digital display shows the actual temperature inside the freezer.

The 'Super Freeze' function

High freezer temperature alarm

- Use this setting after turning on the appliance for the first time, before cleaning, and when inserting larger quantities of food (see “freezing procedure”).

- Control unit I: press the E button – the orange LED F lights up. The setting is deactivated automatically after approximately two days.

- Control unit II: rotate the A knob to the SF position (Super Freeze) – the orange LED F lights up. After approximately two days, the Super Freeze function is automatically deactivated and the appliance continues to operate on the Max setting. To repeat the Super Freeze process, rotate the A knob to the Eco position and then back to SF!

After the end of the Super Freeze process, rotate the A knob back to the desired setting.

All models:

The red signal lamp (D) signals an excessive rise in temperature. The lamp goes off automatically if the freezer cools down to a point where there is no danger of stored food decaying.

- After the first switch-on, the appliance has a 24-hour temperature alarm delay, in order to allow the freezer to reach the required temperature. This is to prevent unnecessary alarm reactions.

Control unit I:

In addition to the red LED, an intermittent audible alarm is also triggered.

• Turn off the audible alarm by pressing the C button.
• The audible alarm is triggered every 24 hours if the temperature in the freezer does not drop sufficiently to prevent the danger of damage to the food.

Selecting the temperature:

To activate: rotate the temperature setting knob in the clockwise direction towards the Max position.

When the appliance is switched on for the first time, a red LED lights up; this LED will go off when the refrigerator has cooled down to a temperature at which there is no more danger of damage to the food.

To deactivate: rotate the knob back until the dot indication coincides with the ⏻ marking (the appliance is still connected to the mains, i.e. there is still electric current in the appliance).

• Recommended setting of the temperature setting knob (A) is in the middle, between Min and Max.
• A change in the environment temperature will also affect the temperature in the appliance. Thus, the temperature setting should be adjusted accordingly. Positions towards the Max marking stand for lower temperature in the appliance (cooler temperatures), while the positions closer to the Min marking stand for higher temperature (warmer).

The red LED is switched on: If the temperature in the refrigerator rises above a certain level, this LED lights up; the LED goes off automatically when the temperature in the refrigerator drops sufficiently to prevent the danger of damage to the food (see “Troubleshooting”).

Freezing and storage of frozen food

Freezing process

- 24 hours before freezing fresh food, activate the Super Freeze function:

- control unit I: press the E button;

- control units II and III: rotate the A knob to the SF position (Super Freeze).

After 24 hours, insert the fresh food into the freezing drawer. Fresh food packages should not be in contact with the food already frozen.

- After the following 24 hours, the packages of frozen food may be moved to the storage drawer and the freezing process may be repeated as required.

After the Super Freeze process is over, rotate the A knob back to the desired setting (control unit II and III)! Freezer models NO FROST allow freezing in all drawers, but not more than 7 kg in any particular drawer, and 4 kg in the bottom drawer. Optionally you can remove drawers and store food directly on the shelf.

- For freezing smaller quantities of fresh food (1-2 kg), the engagement of the fast freeze function is not required.

Important precautions for freezing of fresh food

⚠️ Freeze only such food which is suitable for freezing and can sustain low temperatures. Food should be of adequate quality and fresh.

Select adequate packaging for each kind of food and pack it correctly.

The packaging should be air tight and well sealed without leaking since this could cause substantial vitamin loss and dehydration.

Mark packages with following data: Type, amount and dates.

It is imperative that food is frozen as quickly as possible. We therefore recommend the size of the package not to be too large and to be cooled before loading into the freezer.

The amount of the fresh foods that can be loaded in the freezer as a single load is declared on the rating plate. If the loaded amount is too large, the quality of freezing is reduced which in turn affects the quality of frozen foods.

Storing commercially frozen food

The storage time and recommended temperature for storing commercially frozen foods is indicated on the packaging. Always follow manufacturer's instructions for storage and use of frozen food. When shopping be careful to choose only food which is adequately packed and provided with complete data and stored in freezers where the temperature never rises above -18°C. Do not buy packages of food with frost. This indicates that the package was thawed at least once before.

Take care that packages don't start to thaw during transport to your home. Temperature rise shortens the storage time of commercially frozen foods.

Defrosting frozen food

Partially thawed or defrosted foods should be used as soon as possible. Cold air preserves the food but it does not destroy microorganisms which rapidly activate themselves after defrosting and make foods perishable.

Partial defrosting reduces the nutritional value of food, especially fruits, vegetables and readymade meals.

Making ice

Remove the cap from ice tray (certain models only) and fill it to the mark with filtered cold water or some other liquid, suitable for freezing. Close it and place it on the door shelf. One tray can be placed over the other. Ice tray can produce 8 cubes, with extra 8 made if you pour water over the top of the tray in horizontal position.

It is recommended to make ice on stock.

Ice cubes are removed from the tray by turning the tray upside down and placing it under cold running water. Shake the tray, open the cover and pour the ice out.

Defrosting the appliance

• Clean the freezer when the frost layer in the freezer reaches thickness of around 3-5 mm.
• 24 hours prior defrosting activate intensive freezing knob (see section Control of particular models - Intensive freezing), to quickly freeze freshly inserted food. The yellow light will indicate this. After that empty the freezer and take care that the packages remain frozen.
• Switch the appliance off by turning the temperature selector A to the mark ⏻, and pull the power cord from mains socket.
• To drain defrost water, pull out the funnel-shaped groove at the bottom of the appliance and place a convenient vessel underneath to collect the defrost water.
• Never use powered appliances to defrost the freezer (hair dryer, etc.).
• Avoid using defrosting sprays, as they may cause damage to the plastic parts and may be hazardous to health.
• Clean the interior of the appliance and wipe it dry (see chapter Cleaning).
• Before reloading food into the freezer, switch the appliance on prior.
• Defrosting of NO FROST freezer is automatic. Periodic appearance of frost layer eventually disappears automatically.

Prior to any cleaning, please disconnect the appliance from the mains (turn the thermostat

button to the position ⏻ and pull the power cord from the mains outlet). Special antibacterial protection in the top layer of inner walls prevents the growth of bacteria while keeping the interior clean and germ-free.

Please remove traces of any cleaning detergents you may have used.

• To clean any surface, use a soft cloth. - Clean the exterior of the appliance with water and mild liquid detergent. - For cleaning of plastic, coated, or aluminum parts, avoid using abrasive or special cleansing agents (like stainless steel polish), otherwise you may damage the surface. - Clean coated and aluminum surfaces using a soft cloth and an alcohol-based cleaning agent (like glass cleaner). - Wash the interior of the appliance with liquid detergent and lukewarm water, mixed with a little vinegar. - The condenser on the rear wall must always be clean and free of dust or kitchen fumes deposits; therefore, clean the dust periodically with a non-metallic brush or vacuum cleaner. - Ice and/or frost deposits exceeding 3-5 mm increase energy consumption, so you need to remove them regularly (not for the NO FROST freezer). Do not use sharp pointed objects, solvents, or sprays. • After cleaning, switch the appliance on and replace the contents.

Noise level

Fault: Cause/Remedy
The appliance does not operate after connection to the mains:	· Check if there is power in the socket and if the appliance is switched on.
Cooling system operates continuously without intermittent stoppages:	· Check air circulation for sufficient cooling of the compressor, and clean the condenser.
	· Ambient temperature too high.
	· Frequent opening of the door, door open too long.
	· Door not closed properly (particle between door gasket, sagged door, check gasket sealing, etc...).
	· Excessive quantity of fresh food inserted at once.
	· ‘Intensive freezing’ option is on.
Ice formation within the freezer interior is a consequence of:	· Bad door sealing; clean or replace the gasket if dirty or damaged.
	· Frequent opening of the door, door open too long.
	· Inserting hot food in the freezer.
Red light is on:	· Frequent opening of the door, door open too long.
	· Door not closed properly (particle between door gasket, sagged door, damaged gasket, etc...).
	· Excessively long power failure.
	· Excessive quantity of fresh food inserted at once.
Difficult door opening:	· If you attempt to open the immediately closed door of the freezer you may experience resistance. This happens because certain quantity of cold air escapes from the appliance through the open door and is replaced by warm ambient air. Cooling of such air creates negative pressure (vacuum) and suction, which prevents easy opening of the door. This is normalized after several minutes and you can open the door with ease.
Bulb replacement (certain models only):	· Before replacing the light bulb, disconnect the appliance form the power supply. Remove the plastic cover, replace the bulb with a new one (E 14, max. same voltage as the factory one) and fi t back the cover.
	· Please dispose of this correctly.
	· Light bulb is consumption material and is not covered by the warranty.
Green LED is fl ashing:	· If the green LED is fl ashing, call the nearest service center.
Occurrence of murmur after closing the door	· After closing the door, some murmur can occur. This phenomenon is normal and is due to pressure equalisation.
Error code displayed (certain models only):	·If the character E1 appears on the digital display (certain models only), call service assistance.
Troubleshooting helpful hints:	·If you are not able to fix the trouble by any of the above tips, turn the thermostat button to the position, disconnect the power cord from the mains outlet, wait 10 minutes, and reconnect the appliance.Should none of the above guidelines be of positive help, please call for service assistance, quoting information given on the rating plate either within, or at rear of an appliance.

• After starting the appliance, the operation of the compressor (the refrigerant flow) may be somewhat louder. This does not mean that something is wrong with the appliance, nor does it have any influence on the lifetime of the appliance. Gradually the noise is reduced and eventually subsides.
• Sometimes the appliance produces unusual and stronger noise, which is rather unusual for the appliance. This noise is often the consequence of inadequate positioning of the appliance:
• The appliance should be placed and leveled firmly on a solid base.
• It should not touch the wall or adjacent kitchen units standing next to it.
• Check whether the accessories in the interior of the appliance are placed correctly in their positions; also check the bottles, tins, and other vessels that might touch each other and vibrate.
