Frequently Asked Questions - USB2DVIE StarTech.com

How do I install the USB2DVIE adapter?
Insert the driver CD before connecting the adapter. Follow the on-screen wizard, accept the license agreement, then connect the external display to the DVI port. Finally, connect the USB cable to your computer and restart if prompted.
Can I use multiple USB2DVIE adapters on one computer?
Yes, you can connect up to five adapters simultaneously. During installation, choose 'No, I will restart later' and repeat the process for each adapter. Reboot after all are installed.
Why can't I set the USB2DVIE as the primary display?
Some graphics card utilities prevent this. Disable any third-party graphics utility in the system tray before switching to Primary mode.
Why doesn't my DVD player work on the extended display?
Some DVD playback software does not support secondary displays. Try opening the program on the extended display before playing the DVD.
Why won't video play in Media Player when moved to the extended desktop?
Ensure the Media Player window is fully moved to the secondary screen. If not, it may still be partially on the primary display.
Why does my mouse cursor not move to the extended desktop?
Check the display settings to ensure display 2 is positioned to the right of display 1. You can rearrange displays in the Display Properties Settings.
There are horizontal lines on my screen. What should I do?
This is often due to low refresh rate. In Display Properties, select the USB2DVIE adapter and set the refresh rate to 60Hz. Avoid exceeding the monitor's supported refresh rate.
Does the USB2DVIE support Direct3D?
Direct3D is not supported with this adapter. Check for driver updates on StarTech.com for potential future support.

USB2DVIE Operation

The USB2DVIE Adapter can support LCD or CRT monitors and offers four distinct modes of operation: Primary, Extended, Mirror and Rotate, which can be selected by clicking on the “UD” icon in the taskbar.

Primary Mode

12:37 PM

Selecting Primary mode will set the secondary display adapter as the main display adapter in the system. The system's primary adapter (and monitor) will automatically switch to act as the extended desktop.

Primary ✓ Extended Mirror Rotate Off Resolutions US8 2.0 Graphics DEVICE-1

Please Note: Some display utilities and drivers that ship with AGP and built-in display adapters will prevent this option from working on some systems. For the USB-VGA (Primary) setting to take effect, you must first disable the original display utility (typically located in the system tray).

Extend Mode (Default)

This mode extends the image shown on the primary display onto the secondary display.

You can change the relative position of this extension under the Display Properties (Go to Control Panel -> double click on Display and select the Settings tab).

Mirror Mode

This setting will mirror the image from your original desktop onto the secondary desktop.

The screen resolution setting on the secondary monitor will follow the primary screen's resolution. For example, if the primary resolution is 1024x768 @32bit, the secondary monitor's resolution will be the same. But, if the selected resolution setting is not supported by the primary screen, a warning dialogue box will be displayed and the suggested screen resolution will be shown.

Instruction Manual

Rotate Mode

This feature enables the user to rotate the secondary display image by 0^ (default), 90^ , 180^ or 270^ .

Off Mode

This option disables the USB2DVIE Adapter on the system.

Setting the Resolution

Similar to the operating modes offered, the display resolution can be configured from the UD icon in the taskbar. Alternatively, the display resolution can be modified from the Display Properties feature (right-click on the desktop, select Properties then Settings).

A list of supported resolutions is available in the Technical Specifications section.

FAQs/Troubleshooting

Q: Why can't I make the USB2DVIE Adapter the primary display?

A: Some video cards are shipped with a utility that prevents other video cards from being set as the primary adapter. Check the bottom right hand corner of the taskbar for the video card graphics utility and disable the utility before switching the USB2DVIE to be the primary display.

Q: Why won't my DVD player work when I move it over to the extended display?

A: Some DVD playback software packages do not support playing on a second display adapter of any kind. You may try to open the program in the secondary display first before playing the DVD.

Q: How come my video will not play on Media Player if I move it over to the extended desktop?

A: Check that you have moved the Media Player window completely over to the second screen.

Q: Why does my mouse not move past the right side of the screen, when it should be on the extended desktop?

A: Check the display settings and make sure that your display number '2' is on the right side of display number '1'. You can rearrange how Windows treats each display in relation to one another in the Display Properties Settings.

Q: There are lines running horizontally up and down my screen.

A: This is due to a low refresh rate setting. You can change this in the Display Properties Settings Advanced Monitor. Make sure you select the USB2DVIE adapter first, and ensure the refresh rate is not set to exceed the capability of the display.

This may damage your monitor. You can also try to reset/refresh/resynchronize your monitor.

Q: Direct3D does not work?

A: This is a current limitation of the adapter. Please check for driver updates in the future for additional support, on http://www.startech.com.
