Using Your Vicks® True HEPA Air Purifier

For best results we recommend you run the Air Purifier 24 hours per day. Allergen-generating sources can emit allergens constantly, and the flow of air from outdoors to indoors or disturbances through typical household activity can introduce a continuous flow of new allergens to the air.

First Time Use

Read all instructions before using this appliance.

The Air Purifier is simple to set up and operate:

  1. Unpack and remove all packing material.
  2. Place the unit on its back.
  3. Remove the Filter Access Door and slide the Filter Cartridge from the unit. Remove the plastic bag from the Filter Cartridge and replace Filter Cartridge and Filter Access Door (see Filter Replacement).
  4. Completely unravel power cord and place unit on a flat, stable surface. Inspect the power cord for signs of damage before use. If cord is damaged, DO NOT use product, please call 1-800-477-0457.
  5. Follow the directions below to operate the Air Purifier.

Operating Instructions

  1. Make sure the Speed Control is in the OFF position, place the unit on a flat, stable surface, and plug the power cord into a 120 volt AC wall outlet.
  2. Turn the Speed Control to the desired setting. The Power Indicator Lamp will illuminate. The highest setting (“Turbo” on V9130) will provide the highest air flow and fast, deep cleaning of the room air. Lower settings provide quieter operation. There may be a slight puff of black dust released the first time the unit is operated. This is from carbon shaken loose during shipping and is normal.
  3. This Air Purifier is equipped with an Ionizer function which is particularly effective against smoke and odors. Turn the Ionizer On/Off Switch to the "on" position to activate the Ionizer. The Ionizer Indicator Lamp will illuminate.

Care and Cleaning

CAUTION: ALWAYS TURN OFF THE POWER SWITCH AND DISCONNECT THE POWER CORD FROM THE ELECTRICAL OUTLET BEFORE CLEANING.

Outer Housing:

Dirt and dust that settles on the unit due to the ionization process, as well as fingerprints, can be wiped away with a clean, soft cloth. Do not use cleaning agents or abrasive materials to clean this unit. Use a cotton swab to wipe dust accumulation from between the grilles.

Ion Emission Pins:

BE SURE THE POWER CORD IS DISCONNECTED FROM THE ELECTRICAL OUTLET.

Use a cotton swab moistened with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) to clean dust accumulation from the Ion Emission Pins.

Filter Replacement

With proper care and maintenance, the Vicks® Air Purifier should serve you for many years to come.

Carbon PreFilter: The Carbon PreFilter serves two filtration functions. It removes odor and gases from the air, as well as protecting and prolonging the life of the HEPA filter. Under normal conditions, it is expected to have 90 days' odor-capturing ability. The odor-capturing capability can not be recharged.

If you use the Air Purifier in an environment where there are high concentrations of odors or gases (such as cigarette smoke), you will probably need to change the Carbon PreFilter more frequently.

Visually check the PreFilter. If there is a high level of accumulation visible on the surface, it is a good idea to replace the filter, even if its odor-capturing capability has not perceivably diminished.

HEPA Filter: The HEPA filter can be effective for up to three years, although this can vary considerably depending on the environment in which the cleaner is used. We recommend replacement every other season as a general rule. Heavy use, especially with high pollen, sawdust, smoke or soot concentrations in the air will shorten the life of the HEPA Filter, as well as that of the Carbon PreFilter.

Replacement Filters

The Vicks Air Purifier requires the following replacement filters:

Air Purifier Model: V9130 V9075
Replacement HEPA Filter HF130 HF075
Replacement Carbon PreFilter CF1CF2

These filters are available wherever Vicks® Air Purifiers are sold. For assistance in locating an outlet near you or to order directly from Kaz, please call 1-800-477-0457

To Replace Filters

  1. Make sure the unit is turned to the Off position and the Power Cord is unplugged from the outlet.
  2. Place the unit on its back.
  3. Remove the Filter Access Door by simultaneously releasing the two Locking Tabs. Slide the Filter Cartridge from the unit by pulling on the handle.

To Replace PreFilter Only

  1. Remove the PreFilter Grille by lightly releasing the tab on top of the Filter Cartridge followed by the tabs on the bottom. Lift the Carbon PreFilter from the Filter Cartridge and discard the used Carbon PreFilter.
  2. Remove the new Carbon PreFilter from its packaging and protective polybag and place the PreFilter squarely on the Filter Cartridge.
  3. Snap the PreFilter Grille into place by engaging the two bottom tabs of the Filter Cartridge and then the top tab. Make sure all three tabs are engaged.
  4. Slide the Filter Cartridge all the way into the unit and replace the Filter Access Door. Engage the three tabs first, then make sure both locking tabs are engaged.
  5. Set the unit on a stable, flat surface and plug the power cord into the appropriate wall outlet.

To replace HEPA Filter:

  1. Remove the Carbon PreFilter as described above. Inspect the Carbon PreFilter, it may need to be replaced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Air Purifier seem loud?

The Vicks® Air Purifier is designed for maximum output in a compact design. The amount of air flowing through unit at the Turbo setting will clean the amount of air in a medium sized room every ten minutes, and this can result in noise from the air flow. Three lower settings are designed to offer lower noise levels.

How will I know when it's time to change the filter?

Change the Carbon PreFilter when you notice the odor-capturing capability of the Air Purifier diminishing over time. Depending on the severity of the odors, this can take up to three months. It is a good idea to visually inspect the PreFilter occasionally for blockage if you live in a high dust environment or one where high accumulations of pet hair can occur. If there is a visible accumulation of particles on the PreFilter, it should be replaced.

Use your judgment in changing the HEPA Filter Cartridge depending on the environment in which you use the Air Purifier. The pores in the filter will gradually become blocked by the accumulation of particles. If the filter is brown or grey, it is likely that it should be replaced. Below are some guidelines, though you may choose to replace the filter more or less frequently.

  • For 24-Hour use in a heavily contaminated area we recommend semi-annual to annual filter changes.
  • For everyday use in light to moderate particle environments, we recommend every other season.
  • If used occasionally in an environment of light to moderate particles, it can last up to three years.

Why is my Air Purifier making ‘sparking’ sounds?

The Ion Emission Pins need cleaning. Buildup on the pins can reduce their efficiency and cause a sparking sound to occur. Refer to Care and Cleaning section for instructions on how to clean Ion Emission Pins.

Why is my Air Purifier emitting air in 'puffs'?

It is time to change the HEPA Filter Cartridge. The 'puffs' are from the added suction needed to pull air through a clogged filter. Suction builds and releases instead of moving at a continuous flow.

Why is the Air Purifier not running?

Check to be sure that it is plugged in properly and switched on. Verify that the outlet is working by plugging something else into the outlet. If you are unable to solve the problem, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SERVICE THE MACHINE YOURSELF. PLEASE CALL 1-800-477-0457 FOR ASSISTANCE.

About Air Purification

Indoor air pollutants are unwanted (and sometimes harmful) materials in the air in every home, including particles and gases that can be breathed into your lungs and cause allergic reactions.

If you suffer from allergies associated with airborne particles, there are three commonly recommended strategies for their reduction:

  • Control the source of the allergens by doing things such as vacuuming regularly and removing pollinating plants.
  • Ventilate your home when practical, replacing contaminated air.
  • Use an air cleaner.

This combination of strategies, including the use of a Vicks True HEPA Air Purifier, may result in reduction of airborne allergens in your home.

For best results, place the Air Cleaner near the source of pollutants or where it can process air of occupied areas.

Kaz also recommends humidity control as part of an overall allergen-reduction regimen. High levels of humidity (over 50%) in the home can create beneficial environments for mold growth and dust mites, discussed in “Types of Allergens”. It is important to note that low levels of humidity (less than 25%) can be harmful as well: low humidity can reduce mucus production, inhibiting the body’s natural ability to capture pollutants, viruses and bacteria.

Types of Allergens

An allergen is any material that can provoke an allergic or asthmatic reaction in an individual predisposed or sensitized to that material

Pollen

Nearly all plants generate pollen at differing levels depending on the season and location. While pollen allergies are common, they are also controllable by remaining indoors during pollen season with doors and windows closed. It can also be helpful to bathe and wash hair before going to bed to avoid transferring the pollen to bedding.

Dust

The most bothersome component of household dust is the Dust Mite, a microscopic creature found in virtually all homes. It lives primarily in cloth, bedding and carpeting and its waste products are the main allergen to which dust-allergic people react. The key to long-term control of dust allergens is control of the Dust Mite itself. The Dust Mite thrives in moist, humid conditions of around 75% humidity, and can be controlled through humidification control (mites cannot survive humidity levels lower than 50% relative humidity), use of mattress and pillow covers designed to protect against Dust Mites, and frequent vacuuming.

Mold

Molds are found in the house throughout the year, though mold concentration is highest in spring and autumn. Molds thrive on decaying matter and send spores into the air for reproduction. Mold Spores are relatively large and are easily captured by the HEPA Filter media. Aside from the EPA guidelines listed earlier in this section, keeping the level of humidity in the house at a reasonable level is effective in controlling mold. Individuals with severe allergies should attempt to maintain a household humidity level of less than 40% relative humidity.

Pet Allergies:

Cat allergies are the most common pet allergies. The allergen most people react to is not the fur of the pet, but protein found in the saliva and dander of all cats which can become airborne when dried. There are no non-allergenic breeds of cats, all cats produce some level of allergens. There is no relationship between the cat's hair length and dander production. Kaz recommends HEPA Air Filtration as part of a pet-allergen reduction regimen, along with vacuuming and frequent bathing of the pet.

True HEPA Filtration

HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) Filters are made from extremely fine filter media which removes a minimum of 99.97% of all pollutants as small as 0.3 microns. This handles virtually all harmful airborne particles.

The filter in the unit is sealed so that virtually all air passing through the unit passes through the filter media. This guarantees maximized performance from the Air Purifier.

About Ionizers

Ionizers emit negatively charged electrons which attach to the very small particles passing through the filter. The ionizer is particularly effective on smoke and odors.
