Frequently Asked Questions - PCI2S232485I StarTech.com

What is the maximum baud rate supported per port?
The maximum baud rate is 921.6 Kbps per port.
How do I set the operating mode for each port?
Use jumpers JP1/JP2 for Port 1 (S1) and JP4/JP5 for Port 2 (S2). Refer to the manual for jumper configurations to select RS232, RS422, RS485 2-wire, or RS485 4-wire.
What does the transmission echo jumper do?
The echo jumper (JP2/JP5) determines if transmitted data is echoed back. This is useful for detecting data collisions in RS485 2-wire mode.
How do I enable the termination resistor?
Set the jumper JP2 (for Port 1) or JP5 (for Port 2) to enable the 120 Ohm termination resistor between DATA+ and DATA- for RS485.
Is this card compatible with Windows 10?
The manual lists support for Windows up to Windows 7. However, Windows 10 may still work with drivers from StarTech.com downloads page.
What is the pinout for RS232 on the DB9 connector?
Pin 1: DCD, 2: RXD, 3: TXD, 4: DTR, 5: GND, 6: DSR, 7: RTS, 8: CTS, 9: RI.
What is the pinout for RS422/485 on the DB9 connector?
Pin 1: TXD- (DATA-), 2: TXD+ (DATA+), 3: RXD+, 4: RXD-, 5: GND, pins 6-9: NC.
Does the card require an external power supply?
No, the card is powered directly from the PCI slot; no external power is needed.
Can I use both ports simultaneously with different protocols?
Yes, each port can be independently configured for RS232, RS422, or RS485 via jumpers.
What is the warranty on this product?
The PCI2S232485I is backed by a lifetime warranty from StarTech.com.

Installation

WARNING! PCI cards, like all computer equipment, can be severely damaged by static electricity. Be sure that you are properly grounded before opening your computer case or touching your PCI card. StarTech.com recommends that you wear an anti-static strap when installing any computer component. If an anti-static strap is unavailable, discharge yourself of any static electricity build-up by touching a large grounded metal surface (such as the computer case) for several seconds. Also be careful to handle the PCI card by its edges and not the gold connectors.

Hardware Installation

  1. Turn your computer off and any peripherals connected to the computer (i.e. Printers, external hard drives, etc.). Unplug the power cable from the rear of the power supply on the back of the computer and disconnect all peripheral devices.
  2. Remove the cover from the computer case. Refer to documentation for your computer system for details.
  3. Locate an open PCI or PCI-X slot and remove the metal cover plate on the rear of the computer case.

  4. Set the jumpers on the card to the desired configuration. See "How to Use" section for jumper descriptions.

  5. Insert the card into the open PCI or PCI-X slot and fasten the card's bracket to the rear of the case.
  6. Place the cover back onto the computer case.
  7. Insert the power cable into the socket on the power supply and reconnect all other connectors removed in Step 1.

Driver Installation

Transmission Echo

This jumper determines if transmission data will be echoed back. The Echo mode is useful to detect if the RS485 bus has data collision. If the echoed data is not equal to the transmitted data, then there is collision. This setting only affects the RS485 2-wire mode. It doesn't affect RS485 4-wire, RS422 or RS232 modes.

Termination Resistor

This jumper enables/disables the 120 Ohm termination resistor between DATA+ and DATA- of the RS485 transceiver:
