Before cleaning or maintaining the appliance switch it off or unplug it. Cleaning is the only maintenance normally required. It must be carried out with the microwave oven disconnected. Use a mild detergent, water and a soft cloth to clean the interior surfaces, the front and rear of the door and the door opening. When cooking food with a high moisture content, condensation may appear on the inner door glass or on the cavity walls. This will normally disappear after a short time when the process is finished. If present at the end of the cooking process, wipe with a cloth. Do not use chemicals or abrasive compounds to clean any part of the microwave oven. At regular intervals, especially if spillages have occurred, wipe clean the base if the oven. Do not allow grease or food particles to build up around the door nor in the ceiling, around the grill element.
Important
The door seals and the door seal areas must be regularly inspected for damage. If these areas are damaged the appliance should not be operated until it has been repaired by a service technician trained by the manufacturer. Ensure that the Grill element is in the upfolded position and locked with the hook before you use the Grill functions.
For easy cleaning:
-
Press the grill element against the ceiling.
-
Push the hook to the side and fold the grill element down.
Warning
Service only to be carried out by a trained service technician. It is hazardous for anyone other than a trained person to carry out any service or repair operation which involves the removal of any cover which gives protection against exposure to microwave energy. Do not remove any cover.

Warning: The oven must not be operated with the temperature probe in the cavity if it is not plugged into the oven. If you do operate the oven without complying with the above you may damage the probe.
- The temperature probe should normally be inserted so that the tip of the probe is positioned in the thickest part of the food as this is the part that takes the longest time
- The tip of the probe must not touch any bones which the food may contain. Also, avoid placing the probe in fatty areas of the food as these areas heat up more quickly
by microwaves giving misleading end temperatures. • The temperature probe should, if possible, be positioned so that the tip does not touch the walls or the bottom of the cooking vessel. - The temperature which is set must be higher than the current temperature of the food.
- It is not possible to use the temperature probe when making sweets, jam and
- Marmalade, of dishes which need to be cooked or simmered for a long period. This is because the highest temperature which can be set is 95°C.
- Never immerse the temperature probe in water when cleaning. Simply wine clean with
a damp cloth or kitchen roll after use.
Chicken
When the temperature probe is used to cook or heat chicken the tip should be positioned in the flashiest part of the chicken, i.e. on the inside of the thigh just behind the leg. It must not touch any bones.
Lamb
When cooking a lamb joint/leg of lamb, insert the tip of the temperature probe into the thickest part so that is does not touch the bone.
Pork
When cooking pork, eg. pork shoulder, gammon, silverside, etc, the temperature probe should be inserted into the 'end' of the joint rather than through the layer of fat on the surface. Avoid placing the tip of the probe in fatty areas of the pork.
Fish
The temperature probe can be used when cooking whole fish, large fish such as pike or salmon. Position the tip of the probe in the thickest part, not too close to the backbone.
Recommended temperatures when using microwaves only:
78°C (full power)
76°C (half power)
78°C (half power)

MICROGOLVEN
MICROWAVES
Glass drip tray The glass drip tray collects the dripping juices and food particles that otherwise would stain and soil the interior or the oven. It may also be used as a cooking utensil. Further information about utensils for microwave ovens can be found in your cookbook for microwave ovens.
Accessories and utensils for use with the microwave function only
Make sure the utensils you use in your microwave oven are suitable for microwave cooking.
Utensils and cooking containers used in a microwave oven should be of a material that does not act as barrier to microwave energy. Generally this means that you should cook in either paper, plastic, glass or ceramic.
Metal pans reflect microwave energy and inhibit cooking and should not be used. In addition to material the shape of the container should also be considered.
Round oval shapes give the most even cooking.
Square or rectangular containers may over-cook foods in the corners because more energy is absorbed there.
Shallow containers give more even cooking results.
Utensils made of china and ceramic are excellent to use in your microwave oven. Most types of glass are also very good. Lead crystal glass can crack and should therefore, not be used.
Plastics and paper can also be used, provided they can withstand the temperature of the heated food.
For cooking only use plastics, which will withstand a temperature of over 120°C, eg. polypropene and polyamide. Some plastic materials, eg. melamine, will be heated by the microwaves, and be damaged.
To find out if a certain container is suitable, the following simple test can be made: Place the empty container and a glass of water inside the microwave oven. The water is needed because the oven must not be operated empty or with empty containers. Let the oven work on full power for one minute. A suitable container will only be lukewarm. Metal containers, eg. saucepans or frying pans should not be used in microwave ovens. Nor should plates or vessels with decorations be used since metal eg. gold, might be part of the decoration and such decorations will be damaged.
Small pieces of aluminium foil can be used, but only to shield the areas that would over-cook (eg. for covering chicken wings, leg tips and fish tails) but the foil must not touch the side of the oven as damage may occur.
MICROWAVES
MICROGOLVEN
This is done in several ways in microwave cooking to give more even cooking results. If you are cooking several items of the same food such as jacket potatoes, place them in a ring pattern for uniform cooking. When cooking foods of uneven shapes or thickness, place the smaller or thinner area of the food towards the centre of the dish where it will be heated last.
Unevenly foods such as fish should be arranged in the oven with the tails to the centre. If you are saving a meal in the refrigerator or 'plating' a meal for reheating, arrange the thicker, denser foods to the outside of the plate and the thinner or less dense foods in the middle.
- Place thin slices of meat on top of each other or interlace them. Thicker slices such as meat loaf and sausages have to be placed close to each other.
- Gravy or sauce should be reheated in a separate container. Choose a tall narrow container rather than a low and wide container. When reheating gravy, sauce or soup, do not fill the container more than 2/3.
- When you cook or reheat whole fish, score the skin. - This prevents cracking. Shield the tail and head with small pieces of foil to prevent over-cooking but ensure the foil does not touch the sides of the oven.

Always allow the food to stand for some time after using the oven (either inside or outside the oven). Standing time after defrosting, cooking/reheating always improves the result since the temperature will then be evenly distributed through out the food. In a microwave oven foods continue to cook even when the microwave energy is turned off. They are no longer cooking by microwaves, but they are still being cooked by the conduction of the high residual heat to the centre of the food. The length of standing time depends on the volume and density of the food. Sometimes it can be as short as the time it takes you to remove the food from the oven and take it to the serving table. However, with larger, denser foods, the standing time may be as long as 10 minutes. Upon 'standing', the internal temperature of the food will rise by as much as 8°C and the food will finish cooking during this time.

Four hand-drawn sketches showing different anatomical or mechanical configurations, possibly depicting a foot or blade (no text or symbols present)General guide-lines when using microwaves
Since microwave cooking to some extent is different from traditional cooking the following general guide-lines should be considered whenever you use your microwave oven:
How to select the correct power level?
To prepare your food efficiently, use the following settings to control the power level of the microwave function:
Direct Instant heating. To be used for clear soups, tea, coffee or other foods with a high water content. Use a lower power setting when preparing protein-rich foods.
Setting 12 Maximum power.
Setting 10 High power. To be used for cooking and reheating vegetables, fish, meat, etc. The microwave cookbook indicates when to use maximum or high power.
Setting 8 3/4 of max. power. Use this setting for preparing dishes requiring more careful cooking, e.g. high protein sauces, au gratin dishes, souffles or casseroles. This setting is also suitable for reheating foods.
Setting 4-6 Medium power. This setting is suitable for baking casseroles and cakes.
Setting 3 To be used for rapid defrosting of non-delicate foods. Also suitable for reheating small portions.
Setting To be used for defrosting delicate foods, gateaux and uncooked ingredients.
If the food is undercooked
- you have selected the correct power level - the selected time is sufficient - the times given in the recipes are approximate. They depend on initial temperature, weight and density of the food etc. - the container is appropriate
If the food is overcooked, i.e. dried out or burnt
Before you cook again, consider whether:
- The power level was too high - The set time was too long - the times in the recipes are approximate. They depend on initial temperature, weight and density of the food etc.
Points to remember when defrosting
- The shape of the package alters the defrosting time. Shallow rectangular packets defrost more quickly than a deep block. - Separate pieces as they begin to defrost; free-flow slices defrost more easily. - Shield areas of food with small pieces of foil if they start to become warm. - When defrosting, it is better to underthaw the food slightly and allow the process finish during the standing time.

Aluminium foil containers and microwaves
| The general rule is that metal containers shall not be used in a microwave oven, but if the following rules are being followed, it is possible to use disposable aluminium foil containers when reheating and defrosting when using microwaves, but in general it takes longer time and the end result will not be as good as if the corresponding food were to be placed in containers of plastic or paper: ·Always remove the lid otherwise the oven can be damaged. ·Only new and undamaged foil containers may be used. ·Aluminium foil containers with a height exceeding 5 cm should be avoided. ·The container must be, as a minimum, half-filled. ·There must be a minimum of 1 cm between the aluminium container and the walls of the oven and also between two aluminium containers. This is in order to avoid sparking. ·The aluminium container must always be placed on the bottom tray. ·Frequent use of disposable aluminium foil containers will decrease the life time of the magnetron. ·Reheating of food in aluminium foil containers requires normally, up to double the time compared to reheating in plastic, glass, porcelain or paper containers. The time when the food is ready will vary a great deal. |
