Frequently Asked Questions - Multimode LC/ST Duplex MMF BELKIN

What is the difference between singlemode and multimode fiber?
Singlemode fiber has a smaller core (9 µm) and uses laser light for long distances, while multimode fiber has a larger core (50 or 62.5 µm) and uses LED or VCSEL for shorter distances.
Can I use this cable for outdoor installations?
This cable is typically designed for indoor use. For outdoor installations, you need an outdoor-rated cable with additional protection against moisture and UV.
How do I clean the connectors?
Use a lint-free wipe with isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated fiber cleaning tool. Always clean before mating to avoid contamination.
What is the maximum length of a multimode fiber link?
It depends on the data rate. For 1 Gbps, up to 550 m with 50 µm fiber; for 10 Gbps, up to 300 m with OM3 or OM4 fiber.
What does 'duplex' mean?
Duplex means two fibers are used: one for transmitting and one for receiving, allowing simultaneous bidirectional communication.
Is this cable compatible with all LC and ST ports?
Yes, as long as the ports are standard LC (small form factor) and ST (bayonet style) connectors. However, ensure the port is multimode.
What is the minimum bend radius?
The typical minimum bend radius for multimode fiber is 10x the cable diameter (around 3-4 cm) to avoid signal loss or damage.
Can I use this cable with a media converter?
Yes, if the media converter has LC or ST ports. Ensure the converter supports multimode fiber.
How do I store unused fiber cables?
Keep them in a clean, dry environment. Use dust caps on connectors to prevent contamination.
What does OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4 mean?
They are classifications for multimode fiber: OM1 (62.5/125), OM2 (50/125), OM3 (50/125 laser-optimized for 10 Gbps), OM4 (50/125 for higher bandwidth).
