UNPACKING
Inspect your speakers carefully after unpacking. If they have been damaged in transit, please call your dealer or the trucking firm that
delivered them for instructions on how to file a claim.
POSITIONING FOR AUDIO
Proper positioning of the speakers within the listening room is of primary importance in order to achieve the best possible sound. Room reflections, furniture placement, heavy draperies, window reflections and so on, can influence sonic quality, balance and the stereo image. It is essential to experiment with different locations to determine which placement offers the best overall balance and imaging.
For the best stereδ effect, the speakers should be placed at least 7-10 feet apart. At times, angling the speakers slightly inward toward the listening position will add to overall spaciousness and deliver a more realistic sound stage.
The SL Micro can be mounted on a wall by using the special
brackets which come with the speaker. Be certain the brackets are fastened to a stud where they cannot pull loose from the wall. Use heavy duty screws with long threads so there is an adequate number of threads holding the bracket to the wall. Test the mounting thoroughly before installing the speaker to the bracket.
If the speakers are mounted to the wall and they are higher than ear level, tilt the speakers downward to direct the tweeters toward the listening position. This can be done by placing a shim underneath the upper portion of the wall bracket before it is screwed into the wall. The speakers may be placed on a table top, desk, or any piece of furniture.
POSITIONING FOR HOME THEATER
There are a number of ways to position the speakers for proper playback in a home theater installation. If the speakers are positioned properly for home theater they will be suitable for audio and video playback.
The left and right front speakers should be placed alongside the TV monitor. An SL Micro satellite can be placed on top of the TV monitor (since it is specially shielded to prevent stray magnetic radiation from interfering with the picture) or placed on the floor below the TV, tilted upward toward the listener for maximum sonic impact.
The subwoofer's primary location should be on the same line with the left or right front speaker. If bass response is not adequately deep, then the subwoofer may be moved closer to a wall, or for maximum bass, moved into a corner.
The rear speakers can be placed alongside, or behind the listener's position. Final placement will depend on room acoustics, availability of space and listener's preference. Many listeners do not like having a sound source coming directly from behind. Placing the rear speakers on the side and slightly to the rear may provide a more balanced surround sound field.
Study this drawing to help determine the placement that best suits your needs.

CONNECTING THE SYSTEM
Make sure all equipment is turned off before making connections. SATELLITES WITHOUT SUBWOOFER:
Connect your power amplifier to your speakers by using heavy gauge (#16, 14 or heavier) wire with polarity coding. The side of the wire with a ridge or other coding should be considered plus (+). The speakers must be connected in phase (both woofers always moving in the same direction at the same time) and every precaution must be taken to insure proper in-phase hookup (see diagram). If the speakers are out of phase (one speaker moving outward while the other moves inward) the result will be cancellation of bass frequencies and a floating effect preventing instruments and vocalists from stabilizing in their proper perspective.

PROTECTION CIRCUITRY
The SL Micro speakers include special protection circuitry which protects the drivers from overload. The circuit automatically resets after a few seconds restoring operation of the drivers. Should you
hear the drivers switching in and out, or if there is a reduction in volume, immediately turn down the volume level until the protection circuitry is no longer activating.
UNDERSTANDING MIN/MAX POWER RATINGS
An amplifier with limited power output can actually cause damage to your speakers. A lower powered amplifier, when played beyond its power capability will go into clipping. This generates spurious high frequency signals which, when routed to the tweeter, can cause it to overheat and fail. The active protection circuitry in your
Infinity speaker will generally safeguard against such failure; however, no protection circuit is foolproof and, therefore, overdriving the power amplifier must be avoided. It is for this reason that choosing an amplifier with more power than you need is always a wise choice.
ACOUSTIC FEEDBACK
If, after connecting your system you find the bass response to be boomy (or lacking in tightness and solidity) or if the bass driver cones produce excessive movement, the cause can usually be attributed to acoustic feedback – vibrations from the speakers reaching a turntable and tone arm, creating a resonance. In turn, this vibration is fed back to the electronics and speaker. Since SL Micro speakers extend to very low frequencies, isolating the turntable from vibrations becomes an important procedure.
The turntable should be placed on a heavy, solid support located as
far from the speaker as possible. At times, using a shock mounted base helps reduce the vibration that causes feedback. After trying various methods to reduce acoustic feedback, if the problem still exists, contact your dealer for assistance.
NOTE:
CD players are also susceptible to acoustic feedback and should be placed on solid supports to isolate them acoustically. Another method to isolate the CD player is to place it on four isolation feet available at your local dealer.
Connecting Your Subwoofer
The SL Micro subwoofer is a passive system (does not have a power amplifier built into the enclosure) and can be used with any quality stereo integrated amplifier, receiver, or separate components. Although designed specifically for use with the SL Micro
satellites, the subwoofer may be used to enhance the bass response of any satellite system. After unpacking, observe the following procedures for installing the subwoofer.
A WORD OF ADVICE
It is not possible to operate the subwoofer with the tone controls of your stereo system set to maximum boost. In fact, it is always good practice to keep the tone controls set to reasonable boost levels because excessive bass and treble can damage your satellites as well as the subwoofer.
The volume control settings on your stereo preamplifier, receiver or integrated amplifier is not a indication of the overall volume level of your system. The only important consideration is the
loudness level at which the system can be played regardless of where the volume control is set.
Always turn down the volume when changing a record or switching inputs from AM to FM, phono or CD operation. Excessively loud transients (loud pops and clicks) can damage your speakers. Whenever changing plugs, cables, etc., always turn off your system. This will prevent transients from reaching your speakers and also prevents electrical energy from reaching you. Keep electrical connections out of reach of children.
POSITIONING THE SUBWOOFER
The performance of the SL Micro subwoofer is directly related to it's position in the listening room. At times, moving the subwoofer merely an inch or two can make a significant difference in the way it will sound. If bass response is judged to be light, move the subwoofer closer to a corner. The corner enhances the subwoofer's ability to couple to the room and will create more bass. If bass response is judged too heavy, move the subwoofer away from the wall or corner. The subwoofer does not have to be positioned between the two satellites for best overall sonic balance. It may be placed anywhere it sounds best. Low frequencies are non-directional which means you can place the subwoofer either in the middle or to the left or right of the satellites and obtain optimum bass balance. Experimentation by positioning the subwoofer in several different locations will reveal which position yields optimum results.
The subwoofer may be mounted on its side if required but do not mount it so the port faces the floor. The port must be unobstructed for proper performance.

Refer to illustration for hook up diagram. Connect the Left and Right OUTPUTS of your amplifier to the corresponding Left and Right INPUT terminals on the subwoofer. Connect the satellites to the Left and Right OUTPUT terminals on the subwoofer. Observe polarity.
CAUTION: Do not connect the satellites directly to your amplifier bypassing the subwoofer's output terminals. The satellites must always be connected to the output terminals on the subwoofer.

IN THE EVENT OF TROUBLE
Note that you can use your amplifier's two channels of information for simple trouble-shooting. If the sound quality is distorted, listen to each speaker separately to check if the fault is present in both. If it is, then the trouble is likely to be elsewhere in your system. If the fault is in one channel only, reverse the outputs from your amplifier to the speakers (right-to-left and left-to-right). If the distortion moves to the other channel, the fault is not in the speaker. (This technique may also be used to locate a fault between the signal source and preamp/receiver and/or between preamp and power amp(s).
If you have been unsuccessful in locating the specific source of trouble (or if you have located it, but have been unable to correct it), make inquires in the following order.
