What is the storage capacity of the HP SureStore T20?

The HP SureStore T20 uses Travan TR-5 cartridges with a native capacity of 10 GB. With the included software compression (2:1 ratio), it can store up to 20 GB per cartridge.

What type of interface does the drive use?

The drive uses a SCSI-2 interface with a 50-pin connector. It is compatible with wide SCSI host adapters (68-pin) via an adapter. The SCSI bus termination must be correctly configured.

How to install the internal tape drive?

Internal installation requires a half-height 5.25-inch bay. After preparing the computer (power off, remove cover), configure the SCSI address (default 4) and termination via jumpers. Attach mounting rails if needed, insert the drive, connect the SCSI cable and power. Then use TapeAssure to verify the installation.

How to install the external tape drive?

For the external model, connect the SCSI cable to the drive and the computer. Connect the power adapter. Set the SCSI address using the selector switch on the back (default 4). No manual termination configuration is needed – the drive automatically detects its position in the chain. Run TapeAssure to validate.

Which operating systems are compatible?

The drive is compatible with Novell NetWare (v3.12 and 4.11), Microsoft Windows NT (v3.51 SP5 and 4.0), Windows 95, and SCO UNIX OpenServer 5. Other systems may work with third-party backup software.

How do I write-protect my data?

Each cartridge has a write-protect slider on the side. Slide the slider to the right to lock (read-only), and to the left to enable writing. Check the position before inserting the cartridge.

What if the drive does not backup?

First, check that the drivers and backup software are correctly installed. Use TapeAssure to test the drive. Ensure the SCSI address is not conflicting (run TapeAssure to list devices). Check the SCSI bus termination: the drive must be terminated if it is at the end of the chain. Test with a new cartridge.

How to maintain the drive and cartridges?

No regular cleaning is required. Never clean or degauss the head – this could damage it. Store cartridges in a dust-free environment, away from magnetic fields, at a temperature between 5°C and 45°C. Retension the tape after each insertion (built-in function in the software).

How to use TapeAssure software?

TapeAssure is provided on the HP SureStore Tape CD-ROM. Install it via SETUP.EXE (or the auto-run menu). Under Windows, insert the CD and follow the instructions. It allows you to check the SCSI configuration, test read/write, and diagnose problems. Prepare a blank cartridge for the write test.

What are the signs of a SCSI termination fault?

Incorrect termination can prevent backup. Symptoms: the drive is not detected, communication errors occur, or TapeAssure fails. Check that the termination jumper is present if the drive is at the end of the internal chain, or absent otherwise. For the external, termination is automatic.
