GENERAL POWER TOOL SAFETY WARNINGS

Ozito PXGMTK-4182 - GENERAL POWER TOOL SAFETY WARNINGS - 1

WARNING! Read all safety warnings and all instructions. Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.

Save all warnings and instructions for future reference. The term "power tool" in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.

1. Work area safety

a. Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
b. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
c. Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

2. Electrical safety

a. Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
b. Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
c. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
d. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
e. When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
f. If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.

3. Personal safety

a. Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
b. Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
c. Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
d. Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
e. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
f. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
g. If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.
h. Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use of tools allow you to become complacent and ignore tool safety principles. A careless action can cause severe injury within a fraction of a second.

4. Power tool use and care

a. Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
b. Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
c. Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
d. Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
e. Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool's operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
f. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
g. Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
h. Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles and grasping surfaces do not allow for safe handling and control of the tool in unexpected situations.

Ozito PXGMTK-4182 - POLE PRUNER SAFETY WARNINGS - 1

WARNING! This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety.

Young children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance.

  • Keep all parts of the body away from the saw chain when the chain saw is operating. Before you start the pruner, make sure the saw chain is not contacting anything. A moment of inattention while operating pruner may cause entanglement of your clothing or body with the pruner saw chain.
  • Always hold the pruner with your right hand on the rear handle and your left hand on the front handle. Holding the pruner with a reversed hand configuration increases the risk of personal injury and should never be done.
  • Wear safety glasses and hearing protection. Further protective equipment for head, hands, legs and feet is recommended. Adequate protective clothing will reduce personal injury by flying debris or accidental contact with the pruning saw chain.
  • Do not operate a pruner in a tree. Operation of a pruner while up in a tree may result in personal injury.
  • Always keep proper footing and operate the pruner only when standing on fixed, secure and level surface. Slippery or unstable surfaces such as ladders may cause a loss of balance or control of the pole pruner.
  • When cutting a limb that is under tension be alert for spring back. When the tension in the wood fibres is released the spring loaded limb may strike the operator and/or throw the pole pruner out of control.
  • Use extreme caution when cutting brush and saplings. The slender material may catch the pole pruner chain and be whipped toward you or pull you off balance.
  • Carry the pole pruner by the front handle with the pole pruner switched off and away from your body. When transporting or storing the pole pruner always fit the guide bar cover. Proper handling of the pole pruner will reduce the likelihood of accidental contact with the moving pole pruner chain.
  • Follow instructions for lubricating, chain tensioning and changing accessories. Improperly tensioned or lubricated chain may either break or increase the chance for kickback.
  • Keep handles dry, clean, and free from oil and grease. Greasy, oily handles are slippery causing loss of control.
  • Cut wood only. Do not use pole pruner for purposes not intended. For example: do not use pole pruner for cutting plastic, masonry or non-wood building materials. Use of the pole pruner for operations different than intended could result in a hazardous
  • Do not use the pole pruner while up a tree.
  • Always use the replacement chain bars and chains specified by the manufacturer. Using the wrong replacement chain bars or chains may cause the chain to break or can result in kickback.

Kickback

Kickback may occur when the nose or tip of the guide bar touches an object, or when the wood closes in and pinches the saw chain in the cut. Tip contact in some cases may cause a sudden reverse reaction, kicking the guide bar up and back towards the operator.

Pinching the saw chain along the top of the guide bar may push the guide bar rapidly back towards the operator.

Either of these reactions may cause you to lose control of the saw which could result in serious personal injury. Do not rely exclusively upon the safety devices built into your saw. As a pole pruner user, you should take several steps to keep your cutting jobs free from accident or injury.

Kickback is the result of tool misuse and/or incorrect operating procedures or conditions and can be avoided by taking proper precautions as given below:

  • Maintain a firm grip, with thumbs and fingers encircling the pole pruner handles, with both hands on the pruner and position your body and arm to allow you to resist kickback forces. Kickback forces can be controlled by the operator, if proper precautions are taken. Do not let go of the pole pruner.
  • Do not overreach. This helps prevent unintended tip contact and enables better control of the pole pruner in unexpected situations.
  • Only use replacement bars and chains specified by the manufacturer. Incorrect replacement bars and chains may cause chain breakage and/or kickback.
  • Follow the manufacturer's sharpening and maintenance instructions for the saw chain. Decreasing the depth gauge height can lead to increased kickback.
  • Reduce the element of surprise by understanding what causes kickback.

Push Back

Push back will occur if an attempt is made to saw with the top of the guide bar, if the chain touches against a rigid object and jams in the cut.

Pull Forward

If the bucking spikes are not set against the timber, the chain at the bottom of the guide bar will pull the saw forward; this can jam the chain in the timber. To avoid this always have the bucking spikes set against the timber when performing a cut.

APPLICATIONS

9. LINE TRIMMER/BRUSH CUTTER

Extending the Cutting Line

The line trimmer is fitted with a bump feed function which allows the line to be feed without stopping the line trimmer. If the line trimmer is not cutting correctly the line may need to be feed using this feature.

  1. While the line trimmer is still on, simply bump the head of the trimmer on the ground to allow the line to feed out.

  2. The bump feed will automatically lock once off the ground so that the line will stop feeding.

WARNING! DO NOT BUMP THE HEAD ON ANY HARD SURFACES SUCH AS CONCRETE OR BRICK, THIS COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE LINE TRIMMER.

Ozito PXGMTK-4182 - Extending the Cutting Line - 3

WARNING! DO NOT USE ANY KIND OF METAL WIRE OR METAL WIRE ENCASED IN PLASTIC IN THE LINE SPOOL. THIS MAY CAUSE SERIOUS INJURIES TO THE USER.

Trimming/Mowing

Swing the trimmer from side to side as you walk forward. Always keep the line spool parallel to the ground. Check the site and decide what cutting height you require. Guide and hold the trimmer at the required height to ensure that you cut evenly.

Ozito PXGMTK-4182 - Trimming/Mowing - 1

natural_image Illustration of two workers using a handheld tool with directional arrows indicating movement (no text or symbols)

Low Trimming & Mowing

For mowing, you want to cut all the vegetation down to the ground. To do this, set the trimmer at an angle of 30^ to the right. Place the handle in the required position.

Remember the increased risk of injury to the user, watchers and animals and the danger of damaging other items due to objects (for example stones) being thrown out. Always cut away from yourself. Never draw the trimmer towards yourself.

1 30°

Ozito PXGMTK-4182 - Low Trimming & Mowing - 2

WARNING! TAKE EXTREME CARE DURING MOWING WORK. WHEN DOING SUCH WORK KEEP A DISTANCE OF 30 METERS BETWEEN SELF AND OTHER PEOPLE OR ANIMALS.

Cutting along Fences/Foundations/Trees

When cutting approach wire mesh fences, natural stone walls and foundations slowly so that you can cut close to them without striking the obstacle with the line. If, for example, the line strikes stones, stone walls or foundations, it will wear or fray.

If the line strikes wire fencing it will break. When trimming around tree trunks, approach slowly so that the line does not strike the bark. Approach grass or weeds with the tip of the line and tilt the line spool forwards slightly.

Jamming

If the cutting blade jams as a result of attempting to cut vegetation that is too dense, switch off the engine immediately. Remove the grass and scrub from the trimmer before you restart it.

Preventing Recoil

When you work with the blade there is a risk of recoil if it strikes solid objects such as tree trunks, branches, tree stumps, stones or the like. This will throw the trimmer backwards in the direction opposite to the rotation of the tool. This can cause you to lose control of the trimmer. Do not use the blade near fences, metal posts, boundary stones or foundations. For cutting dense stalks, position it as shown to prevent recoil.

10. POLE PRUNER

Chain Lubrication

Level of oil in the oil container: Both before and during your work make sure that there is always sufficient oil in the system. To avoid damaging the bar & chain, never run the pruner if there is no oil in the system or if the oil drops below the "min" mark. On average, a single filling will last around 10 minutes depending on the number of pauses in cutting and the loads involved.

Ozito PXGMTK-4182 - Chain Lubrication - 1

natural_image Line drawing of a ozito spray gun with funnel and bottle pouring liquid (no text or symbols)

Chain Tension

Tension of the chain, condition of the cutting elements: The sharper the chain, the easier and more controllable it is to operate the pruner. The same also applies to the chain tension. For greater safety you must check the chain tension before your work and at least every 10 minutes during your work. New chains in particular tend to expand more (see Tensioning the Chain.)

Safe Working

Never stand under the branch you want to saw. Use special caution when working with branches under tension and splintering wood.

Possible risk of injury caused by falling branches and catapulting pieces of wood.

When the equipment is in operation, keep other persons and animals away from the danger zone. The equipment is not protected from electric shock through contact with high-voltage cables. Keep a minimum distance of 10m from live cables. Electric shock can cause fatal injury. When working on slopes always stand to the upper or left or right side of the branch you want to cut.

Hold the equipment as close as possible to your body. This will help you to keep your balance.

Always hold the equipment firmly with both hands.

Protective Clothing

Make absolutely sure to wear the appropriate, close fitting protective clothing, such as protective pants, gloves and safety shoes. Wear hearing protection and protective goggles a safety helmet with a face guard will provide protection against falling and recoiling branches.

Ozito PXGMTK-4182 - Protective Clothing - 1

WARNING! THE CHAIN COMES IN CONTACT WITH A HARD OBJECT, VISUALLY INSPECT THE CHAIN & BAR FOR DAMAGE. IF THE CHAIN OR BAR IS DAMAGED, DO NOT CONTINUE TO OPERATE THE POLE PRUNER.

Pruning

Pruning is the removal of a limb or branch from a standing tree.

Diagram showing two labeled parts (① and ②) with arrows indicating flow or movement between them, likely illustrating a geological or material process.

Limbing

Limbing is the process of removing the branches from a fallen tree. Check the direction in which a branch will bend before cutting it. Always cut on the opposite side to the bending direction so that the guide bar is not pinched in the cut. For large limbs that cannot be removed in one cut, make an initial cut from the bent side and finish by sawing from the opposite direction. Do not remove limbs that are supporting the fallen tree on the ground until the tree has been cut into lengths.

APPLICATIONS [cont.]

Sawing Techniques

- When removing branches, hold the pruner at an angle ranging from a maximum 60^ to horizontal in order to avoid being struck by a falling branch.

- At the end of the cut, the weight of the pruner suddenly increases for the user, because it is no longer supported on the branch. There is the risk of losing control of the pruner.

- Saw off the lower branches on the tree first. By doing so, it is easier for the cut branches to fall to the ground.

- Only pull the pruner out of the cut with the chain running. By doing so, you can prevent it from getting jammed.

- Do not saw with the tip of the guide bar. This could lead to kick back and possible injury.

Cutting Wood Under Tension

Special care is required when cutting wood which is under tension. cutting wood which is under tension can release the tension, causing the wood to react out of control. In the worst case this can result in sever and even fatal injuries.

This type of work must be performed only by specially trained persons.

Kickback

The term “kickback” describes what happens when the running pruner suddenly kicks upward and backward. Usually this is caused by contact between the tip of the cutter bar and the workpiece or by the chain becoming trapped. In the event of kickback, large forces occur suddenly and violently. As a result, the pruner usually reacts uncontrollably. This can often result in very serious injuries to the worker or persons in the vicinity. The risk of kickback is at its greatest when the pruner is positioned for a cut in the region of the tip of the cutter bar, as the leverage effect is greatest there. It is therefore safest to position the pruner as flat as possible.

WARNING! IF THE BLADES COME IN CONTACT WITH A HARD OBJECT, VISUALLY INSPECT THE BLADE FOR DAMAGE. IF THE BLADE IS DAMAGED, DO NOT CONTINUE TO OPERATE THE POLE HEDGE TRIMMER.

Cutting New Growth

The most effective method is to use wide, sweeping movements, guiding the cutting edge of the blade straight through the branches. A slight incline of the blade downwards in the direction of movement will produce the best cutting results. It is recommended to tie a guide line of string or the like along the hedge so that you cut the hedge to a level height. The branches above it will be cut off.

15°

Note: Do not use the pole hedge trimmer for cutting stems greater than ∅16mm. Use the trimmer only for cutting normal shrubbery found around houses and buildings.

Cutting the Sides of a Hedge

Cut the sides of a hedge with curve-shaped movements from the bottom up. For design reasons, the engine might stall when the tank is not full and you use the equipment to cut the sides of long hedges.

Maintaining the Guide Bar

Ozito PXGMTK-4182 - Maintaining the Guide Bar - 1

WARNING! ALWAYS WEAR GLOVE WHEN HANDLING THE CHAIN AS IT IS VERY SHARP AND CAN CUT YOU WHEN IT IS NOT MOVING.

  1. Remove any sawdust from the guide bar, including the groove. Oil and sawdust combine and emit a burning smell during operation if the guide bar is not regularly cleaned.

  2. Make sure that the oil port is not clogged. Grease the nose sprocket at the tip of the guide bar.

  3. Check for oil leakage and loose fastenings, especially those securing the handles and the guide bar.

  4. Reverse the guide bar every 8 working hours to ensure uniform wear. Check the guide rails frequently and if necessary remove burrs and square up the rails using a flat file.

Chain Sharpening

Chain File: 4.0mm (5/32")

Chain Pitch: 9.52mm (3/8" LP)

Chain Gauge: 1.10mm (0.043")

Sharpen the chain regularly to maintain optimum performance of the saw. Signs of a dull chain are:

• The sawdust becomes powder-like
- Extra force is required to execute a cut
• The cut does not track in a straight line
- Increased vibration

LEFT HAND CUTTERS 30° RIGHT HAND CUTTERS 30°

Sharpen each cutter using a round 4.0mm (5/32") chain

file. Keep the file level with the top plate of the tooth. Always use outward strokes and maintain a 30^ angle between the chain and file. After sharpening, the cutters must all have the same width and length.

After every 3–4 uses get an authorised repair centre to professionally sharpen your chain. They have the special tools necessary to ensure the correct cutting angles and depths.

Automatic Chain Lubrication

You should check the operation of the automatic chain lubrication system on a regular basis in order to guard against overheating and the damage this can cause to the guide bar and the chain.

Point the tip of the guide bar above some light coloured paper such as newspaper and allow the pruner to run. If you see a growing oil stain on the paper surface, the automatic chain lubrication system is working properly. If no clear oil trace is evident then please refer to the corresponding instructions in "Troubleshooting". If the information contained there still fails to remedy the situation, please contact our service department or another similarly qualified workshop. Do not actually touch the surface with the tip of the cutter rail when performing this test. Keep a safe distance (approx. 20 cm).

Ozito PXGMTK-4182 - Automatic Chain Lubrication - 1

natural_image Line drawing of a chain-linking tool cutting down a flat surface (no text or symbols)

Pole Hedge Trimmer Blade

The high-quality cutter blades are made of tempered steel, and in normal use there is no need to sharpen the blades. If you accidentally strike a wire, stone, glass or other hard object, this may produce a notch in the blade.

There is no need to remove the notch as long as it does not adversely affect the movement of the cutting edges. If it does adversely affect this movement, switch off the machine and use a fine file or a fine grinding stone to remove the notch.

Make sure that the cutting blade is always well oiled. Lay the pole hedge trimmer on a flat surface. Apply a light weight machine oil along the edge of the top blade.
