US Navy SWIFT BOAT (PCF)

Early in 1965 the United States Navy laid down its requirements for a Light Patrol Boat which it required in order to exercise surveillance and control over the extensive shipping traffic on the wide spread rivers and shallow coastal waters of South Vietnam. Construction of the first Fast Patrol Craft (PCF) began a short time later and the first two of these boats arrived in Vietnam during that summer. By 1967 a total of 108 PCF Mk.I's had been built. By 1969 a further 30 of its successor - the Mk.II with a modified deck house - had been built. Along with another 33 Mk.III's built up until 1973, the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard had put a total of 171 of these so-called "Swift Boats" into service. After the hostilities in Vietnam ended, they were used for coastal surveillance. In 1995, the last two Swift boats were decommissioned in Norfolk, Virginia.

The welded hull with a 6 mm thick outer skin was constructed of aluminium sheet. On board there were two bunks and a small galley. In addition to the twin M2 machine guns in the turret - which was mainly used as a lookout, there was a "Piggyback Mortar", an "over and under" mounted 81-mm grenade launcher and a M2 machine gun in the stern. With a range of 3,500 m and a rate of fire of up to 18 rounds per minute, the grenade launcher could deliver very effective fire support. The ammunition supply of 20,000 rounds for the M2 machine gun and around 100 grenades was complemented by illuminating shells and "Flechette" rounds. For the crew, there was also M16 Assault Rifles, M60 machine guns and M79 grenade launchers. In addition to the Decca D202 3cm wavelength radar with a range out to 24 km, the boats had a Raytheon Sonar which was used for navigation and radio equipment for communication. In the Mekong Delta and the coastal waters of South Vietnam the Swift boats operated mostly in groups of three to five units. They were also frequently used to transport fighting troops of the U.S. Army, the U.S. Marine Corps and Navy SEAL teams.

GB: ATTENTION: Read the instructions thoroughly prior to assembly. Each component is numbered (1). Adhere to specified sequence of assembly. Tools required: kaffe and file for removal of components from frame (2); rubber band, adhesive tape and clothes pegs for clamping components together after applying adhesive (3). Clean plastic components in a mild detergent solution and allow to air-dry so that paint and transfers adhere better. Prior to applying adhesive, check to see whether the components fit together; apply adhesive sparingly. Remove chrome and paint from the contact surfaces. Paint smell components before removing them from the frame (4) (5). Allow paint to dry well, and only then continue to assemble. Cut out each transfer individually and immerse in warm water for approx. 20 seconds. Slide transfer off paper and into designated position, then press on with blotting paper.

This Model Kit has been subject to extensive quality and weight checks during the manufacturing process to ensure it leaves our warehouse in perfect condition. We are only able to process applications for missing parts if the following procedure is followed. In all cases the following will be required before we are able to process any request: Original receipt (proof of purchase) original instruction sheets (will be returned) and the bar code cut out of the box. We may not be able to process requests for products that have been discontinued for more than 24 months. Products that are returned directly to us without prior authorisation by a company representative will not be accepted and returned to sender.
