RECOMMENDATIONS
• LOCATION FOR THE INSTALLATION RECOMMENDATIONS BY SECURITY AGENCIES
National Association of Fire Protection (NFPA)
Smoke detectors should be installed in each bedroom, outside every rest area immediately adjacent to the bedrooms and on each floor of the house, including basements but not narrow spaces or not habitable altics.
Detection of smoke - Is it necessary to install additional smoke detectors?
Perhaps the required amount of smoke detectors does not provide protection from first warning. For this reason, it recommends installing additional units in these areas to provide greater protection. Among the areas recommended include additional bedrooms, basements, dining room, boiler room, hallways and service areas not protected by smoke detectors.
It is generally not recommended to install smoke detectors in the kitchen, the attic (habitable or not habitable) or the garage, as those places are created conditions that make occasional these units operate incorrectly.
To get a better detection and timely warning of fires, it is recommended to install fire detection equipment in all parts and areas of the house as follows:
We must install a smoke detector on every rest area (immediate vicinity, but not inside the bedroom) and a smoke detector in the living room, dining room, bedrooms, kitchen, hallways, habitable attics, boiler room, closets, pantries and service areas, basements and attached garages.
• SITES SHOULD AVOID INSTALLATION OF SMOKE DETECTORS
For optimum operation, are advised to avoid the installation of smoke detectors in the following areas:
For optimum operation, are advised to avoid the installation of smoke detectors in the following areas:
- Where there occur particle combustion. These particles are formed from burning objects. These areas include kitchens, garages and boiler room with little ventilation. If possible, keep the unit at least 6 meters (20 feet) of the sources of production of particles (oven, stove, water heater, heating).
- In areas where it is not possible to obtain a distance of 6 meters (20 feet) - for example in modular homes, mobile or smaller - it is recommended to install the detector as far as possible from appliances that consume fuel.
These recommendations are provided location to install the detectors within a reasonable distance from the aircraft which consume fuel and thus avoid "undesirable" alarms. Not desired alarms may be activated if the detector is installed immediately beside one of these devices. These areas should remain as ventilated as possible.
- In air currents near kitchens. It is possible that normal air currents push the smoke of the kitchen toward the camera to detect a unit which is close to it.
- In very humid areas, or with much steam, or directly near bathrooms with showers. Keep units at least 3 meters (10 feet) from showers, saunas, dishwashers and so on.
- In areas where the temperature is normally less than 4.4^ (40°F) or greater than 37.8^ (100°F), including unheated buildings, outdoor terraces, attics or not habitable basements.
- In areas with much dust, dirt or grease. Do not install the smoke detector in the kitchen directly on the oven. Wipe regularly detector the laundry room to keep it free of dust or lint.
- Near air vents air, ceiling fans or in areas too exposed to air currents. The air currents can remove smoke from the unit, preventing it reaches the detection chamber.
- In areas with too many insects. Insects can clog the holes of the detection chamber and trigger false alarms. Within less than 305 mm (12") from fluorescent lights. The electric "noise" can interfere with the detector's function.
- In areas without air. The spaces without air can avoid the smoke to reach the detector.
